## Farewellville

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-1.png)

It's suddenly Oscar weekend, and Juliette is crabbing about how many events she has to go to before they hand out the statues. This feels legit to me. Especially given that she has trapped herself in some kind of fabric prison. It's like an ink-spotted straitjacket.

## Bobbyville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-2.png)

Maddie has been assigned a very famous record producer, and it's none other than [Fun Bobby](https://friends.wikia.com/wiki/Fun%5FBobby?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). Maddie clearly has not been streaming enough classic TV, or else she would know that NOTHING involving Fun Bobby ends well.

## Instaville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-3.png)

Maddie of course documents this moment with a selfie in which she is pressed up against him making a kissy face. She is -- SING IT WITH ME -- such a freaking teenager. Maddie, you Jenner-worshiping teenage teen teenager, I am going to miss the hell out of you.

## Armyville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-4.png)

So... apparently wherever Colt is stationed (North Carolina?), they let him FaceTime while he's in full uniform in the middle of what looks like a day of training. Unless he's trying to be a park ranger, I don't feel great about his prospects. And even then! PAY ATTENTION. They might be teaching you about bears and nature and other shit that wants to eat you.

Also, we're getting pointless plot about how Luke's ex-wife is single again. You cannot tell me they didn't write this whole episode expecting it to be the last, because there is NO WAY you pin the finale on your main character deciding he pines away for a character that a) he historically has described having a terrible relationship with, and b) whom we have never met, nor even heard her NAME.

## Adiosville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-5.png)

Layla, Layla, Layla. Juliette feels lost without Cadence at Oscars weekend -- although what she says to Glenn is that she wishes she had someone who actually loves her to share all the stuff with, and like, Juliette, GLENN. GLENN IS YOUR FATHER. GLENN LOVES YOU. I NEED YOU TO HEAR THIS.

Anyhoo, Layla gets jealous that Avery is going to fly with Cadence to LA, and she tries everything she can to convince him not to go. He isn't falling for it. Layla is overplaying her hand, and Avery is NOT HAVING IT. Just as her bangs finally settle into themselves, she loses her evil thrall over him.

## Toodlesville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-10.png)

So guess who calls the press and leaks Jules' big secret? Layla. And guess who acts like she had never heard this news before? Layla. And guess who tries to play the "Avery I can't be around her right now so we can't go to LA" card? Layla. And guess who doesn't fall for it? AVERY. Well, he believes most of it, but refuses to cancel his plans to fly with Cadence until he gets proof or talks to Juliette. He's completely rational about it, and y'all know how hot I find Good Effing Sense. It's the new six-pack.

## Gulpville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-9.png)

Juliette is upset. Not even because it got out, but because her team's efforts to squelch the truth make her really uncomfortable. (It's part of the Own Your Mess approach she's been taking to her life.) Jeff Fordham's sister is apparently opening an investigation into his death, and there's all this malarkey about how Juliette has to settle with her to make the case go away. And I'm confused: What case? They are trying for wrongful death, but I'm unclear what they actually have that makes anyone think they would win. Lawyers of Fug Nation: SHARE. Without any witnesses, and if Juliette never said anything, what would be the likelihood of Jeff's sister winning? And if Juliette DID confess it all, then what? Are they really going to send her up the river for Jeff falling off a roof while trying to help her? DO I NEED TO GET HER NEW LAWYERS?

## Adieuville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-6.png)

Scott Reeves is enjoying making money as Scarlett's sole sounding board here. He convinces her to tell Gunnar that she's in love with him - and amazingly, SHE DOES. She blurts it out while he's looking at the photo that Dr. Hahn took last week of Scarlett wearing the headphones, and Gunnar is gobsmacked. He knows all of Scarlett's best cardigans and he thought this one was Mousy Repression, not Spontaneous Declarations.

## Sayonaraville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-7.png)

Unfortunately, Autumn walks in at that exact moment and goes, "GOOD, you've talked," and nuzzles right up to him and talks about their lost two week break in Aruba. Scarlett storms out. Gunnar has said nothing, but then he paces and vents to Autumn while she tries to convince him that Scarlett is manipulating him. And since Scarlett has never been a manipulator, EVER in her entire life, it infuriates me temporarily that Gunnar actually listens to this and assumes it must be true.

## Byeville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-15.png)

Scarlett is so peeved at this, in fact, that her facial expressions are quite priceless. Gunnar's hair tries to plead its case -- he's just confused, he doesn't get why she's running hot again after their frosty period, he assumes it must be a game -- and she's basically WAY OVER IT. So of course this leads them to announce that they're better off solo. This will be their last show. And you know who doesn't say, "No it won't because you're under contract to this concert tour and also a record company"? Their manager. He merely points out that they are dumb to go solo because their duo act is charting. He does not think to remind them that CONTRACT LAWS EXIST.

## Specsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-8.png)

Rayna, meanwhile, has found out about Maddie working with Fun Bobby, and it turns out she has a Fun Bobby story of her own: He tried to force himself on her when she was a young artist and she refused. NOT FUN, BOBBY. NOT FUN AT ALL. But this gives Deacon an excuse to put on his glasses one last time. Thank you, Nashville. I really needed this. It was just the prescription my heart required.

## Protestville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-12.png)

Will wants to get on Cynthia Davis's show to fight her hate speech, but they won't put him on, so he and Luke organize a protest outside her studio. Hot Kevin the Songwriter comes by to help, and there's a lot of blah-blah about how he's single now.

So, Luke's all, "You two were great together, professionally and personally, and that's hard to find." Will is like, "You talking about Rayna?" And no, Luke is talking about his ex. SINCE WHEN was his ex a music person? Stop trying to make Luke's ex happen, Nashville. (Well, I guess you HAVE stopped... sniffle.) I swear, in this hour, she is the new Beverly.

## Shirtville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-13.png)

I am not going to miss Maddie's solo-act wardrobe. You are not Stevie Nicks, child. And her song about being a wild card is painfully awful. Lennon Stella is well shut of THAT.

## Causeville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-14.png)

Rayna pleads with Maddie's label head to pair her with another producer, but the woman basically doesn't care about Rayna's story and says harassment is just part of the business. Rayna correctly goes on a tear about how pathetic and awful and destructive that is. It's like Nashville is trying to get in ONE MORE ISSUE before it's over, to make up for how the foster-care story fell totally flat. Although she's right, and sleazebags who pull that kind of shit deserve to burn.

## Bobbyville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-16.png)

SPEAKING OF. Fun Bobby lured Cash and Maddie to his house for a party, and then Cash sidles off to suck up to some dude she likes, leaving Fun Bobby and Maddie alone. Cash is horrid. You don't leave your 16-year old friend/pseudo-sister/client alone at an adult party, even WITHOUT Fun Bobby. The fact that Fun Bobby is also Creepy Bobby makes her seem even blinder. Cash remains THE WORST. She should go hang out with Fitz on Scandal.

## Bustedville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-17.png)

Layla, by the way, really HAS overplayed her hand. Because she told Jeff's sister -- anonymously -- to contact Colt Wheeler for an eyewitness account of Jeff's death (someone PLEASE tell me how Juliette trying to kill herself and Jeff accidentally plummeting past her is going to help this crone win her case). But Colt is doing some truth-telling of his own, and Luke turns around and takes this RIGHT back to Avery -- who, of course, remembers that Layla played dumb every time she heard any of this in the press. I love it when characters actually share information. (Obviously Juliette also claims she told Layla, but Layla deflected that one by claiming it was a manipulative lie. Her tongue is going to turn green and fall out.) BUH-BYE LAYLA. I'm sorry it had to end this way, but at least your album is selling like hotcakes. You'll rebound with Bieber or Drake or something, and then once that catastrophe ends you'll find some British actor who's impossibly cute, and it'll all end up fine.

## Sniffleville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-19.png)

I just wanted to stop for a second and note that Glenn is awesome in this episode. As always. Glenn is THE BEST. Glenn sees through Layla and dumps her, Glenn sticks by Juliette, and Glenn clings to his rug like the best toupee tape. Glenn, I think I'll miss you most of all. (Note: That's not true, but you are RIGHT UP THERE, sir.)

## Screedville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-20.png)

Rayna can't reach Maddie, so she sends an open letter to her via the media that details Fun Bobby's offenses, and how gross and passive the music industry is about these abuses. It's a great letter, and it immediately goes viral -- but not so immediately that anyone at Fun Bobby's party hears about it, including Fun Bobby. Which I don't buy, because Maddie's FRIEND texted her about it right away, so you know someone in the living room at Fun Bobby's was like, "Holy hell, Fun Bobby just got READ by Rayna Jaymes," and then I guess decided to keep drinking his free booze because you don't walk away from an open bar.

Also, the latter says that Rayna worked with Fun Bobby when she was "about" Maddie's age. Maddie is 16\. Fun Bobby is only a year older than Connie Britton. How was he a high-powered music producer when Rayna was 16 going on seventeen? Even Rolf the Singing Telegram Jackhole was only just dipping a toe into Nazi waters when he was 17-going-on-18\. Is Fun Bobby an IMMORTAL skeeze?

## TVville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-22.png)

Will finally gets on Cynthia Davis's show, and very politely and nicely throws her fear in her face. He says he's a good man and a good son, and what she's most afraid of is that her rabid followers -- or even herself -- will see something of him in her own life, be it a son or a relative or a friend. He's well-spoken but never preachy, and WILL LEXINGTON, I LOVE YOU. I just... he has on this show been someone for whose happiness I actually ache.

## CIAOVILLE

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-23.png)

Rayna is at a Foster More benefit in NYC -- they are careful to establish that they're in the same city as Maddie -- and she honors this organization by wearing THE WORST SHIRT IN HER ENTIRE WARDROBE. Nashville really gave up on blouses in this finale. Both Rayna and Maddie look like they're shopping in the kind of mall stores that don't sell any breathable fabrics.

## Pantsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-27.png)

I do need you to know that Rayna got out the tight pants for us, though. And it was good. It was so good.

## Grossville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-31.png)

Across town, Fun Bobby is being as unsubtly disgusting as possible. Even a 16-year old with no life experience would probably realistically have taken one look at this guy and thrown a drink in his face. Poor Maddie, though, gets groped and harassed. It's not her fault, at ALL; I am just poking fun at the TV show making such a caricature out of him. It's almost more powerful -- and more of a lesson -- if Fun Bobby had not looked like he just fell down a well full of whiskey.

## Bobbyville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-24.png)

Deacon notices that Fun Bobby is on Instagram totally creeping on Maddie. And so Deacon does what Deacon will ALWAYS do, and takes matters into his own hands...

## nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-32

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-32.png)

... and goes to get Maddie. He storms in at just the right time for Maddie to wrest herself free and run to him. And the thing is... yay, but also, I need to believe that Rayna sat him down later and said, "Deacon, thank you for not punching Fun Bobby in the nuts and incurring another lawsuit, but seriously, YOU HAVE GOT TO STOP RUNNING OFF WITHOUT TELLING ME AND GOING TO TALK TO PEOPLE YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE NEAR." The only reason she isn't enraged at him for this is because it worked. And the fact that it worked is no excuse -- it's like saying that because you happened not to break your face, it's therefore okay that you climbed up the bookcase and jumped off it. It's NOT. The ACT is not okay, even if the outcome was favorable. Deacon will never learn. See what I mean about being invested in these people? Not relocating Fun Bobby's teeth into his pancreas was a small sign of growth, but technically isn't there a restraining order on Deacon? Couldn't Cash get him arrested just for being there?

## SMELL YA LATERVILLE

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-33.png)

Instead, Cash gets an angry faceful of Maddie, who is rightly furious that Cash selfishly left her alone. I love seeing Cash get reprimanded. The only thing that would've made this better is if Maddie had kept speaking for about ten more minutes without stopping. Cash is this show's Sarah Bunting: Tooth Decay.

## Oscarville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-25.png)

Juliette is at the Oscars looking gorgeous, and Glenn is wearing glasses. YES. I swear, this show is playing right to us all. Sensible People We Like Looking Awesome In Glasses. I may not want to bang Glenn, but I sure as hell want to hug him and find him a life partner of whatever gender he chooses.

Juilette, though, has decided it's time to own up to her behavior. So when Glenn starts to say they'll bypass the red carpet, Juliette turns and says the one thing no one has ever said before in the history of an Oscars red carpet: "FIND ME DEBORAH ROBERTS."

## Robertsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-29.png)

Turns out they keep Deborah Roberts in a special sultan's lair, where she delivers some major WTF face as Juliette confesses that she tried to leap to her death, and that Jeff Fordham died a hero trying to save her. She says all this live on camera, and while I get them cutting to this, I feel like... nobody who works on Nashville has ever actually watched the Oscars or even possibly heard of them. Nobody is interrupting that red carpet for this. They'd be like, "Hey, Jules, let's get the exclusive and then we'll release it tomorrow morning on GMA OMG BLANCHETT IS IN A DRESS MADE OF NEON WAX AND ACTUAL STARDUST JUST WAIT OVER THERE PLS THX K BYE."

## Moistville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-30.png)

Jonathan Jackson, bless him, puts his tear ducts to work one last time. His eyes slowly fill with tears as he hears Juliette say she was trying to commit suicide. He has already dispatched Layla at this point for her lies, which was divine. Oh Layla. What'll you do when you get lonely, and nobody's waiting by your side?

Anyway, Avery and Juliette talk, as he's realized he served her the divorce papers on That Fateful Night and he feels responsible. She tells him he should NOT feel that way AT ALL, and it's really quite sweet, even if I'm upset Nashville didn't break the laws of time and have him appear on her doorstep so they could have this scene in person.

## Propsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-35.png)

Oh, and you need to know this one small thing -- one in a LONG LINE of them -- that I love: Juliette's phone still uses an old photo of Avery when he calls. That feels super realistic to me. It's from happier times. Lesser shows would have gone out and snapped one of JJ on set that day and used it, even though it would have made no sense for her to have a new photo of him there.

## Endingsville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-34.png)

Luke goes off to be with his ex-wife -- they HAVE to have been writing out Will Chase regardless, right? Otherwise this is the lamest season-ending love arc in the world -- and Will and Hot Boring Kevin start making out at a club. And as boring as Hot Boring Kevin was, I am just so happy Will has a boyfriend who is cool and solid and will cuddle him until the end of time. CUDDLE THAT MAN, KEVIN. CUDDLE HIM GOOD.

## Exesville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-36.png)

Gunnar and Scarlett go out to perform what they've decided is their last show. She tells him right beforehand one last time that she loves him, and she never EVER would tell him that if it wasn't deeply how she felt. As as they're singing, Gunnar takes one look at this woman in her ill-fitting, poorly chosen white cowboy boots, and her frock the color of old milk, and thinks, "GET IN MY BELLY."

## Kissville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-37.png)

And so. I'm ALSO quite tickled about THIS, because in my head Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen are going to keep performing and existing as Gunnar and Scarlett forever. I LOVE them together. She brings his hair to special heights, and he can help knit her some more for her own head.

## Reunionville

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-series-finale-recap-42.png)

Deacon gets his happy ending, as Maddie comes back into the fold and gives everyone a big hug. Rayna even smooches him. And like... this is nice and all, but it's a BAND-AID, RAYNA. I love Deacon, but y'all can't pretend that getting Maddie back suddenly erases all his other issues, or your mythologizing of your Great and Powerful Love. Cancellation does not mean your work is done here, Deacon. It just means you all need to go to the big marriage therapist in the sky.

## RAGEVILLE

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-series-finale-recap-43.png)

AND THEN. Juliette does not win the Oscar, but she doesn't care, because she's flying home to her family. Avery and Cadence are waiting to meet her at the airport... AND HER PLANE GOES MISSING. AND THAT'S THE END. YOU GUYS..

NOOO. THIS IS NOT OKAY. What was all that malarkey about Jonathan Jackson saying they shot alternate endings? WHAT WERE THE OTHER OPTIONS? Juliette Barnes is the best thing this show has ever done, and to choose to end the ENTIRE SERIES with her POSSIBLE DEATH BY PLANE CRASH is the worst choice they could have made. I really believe that. I mean, I guess her going to jail for Jeff Fordham's wrongful death would have been worse, but... sigh.

Maybe the argument is that Hayden was going back into treatment, and if they got the show picked up elsewhere, they needed a contingency plan in case she wasn't available. Maybe she'd already said she was out no matter what. I need to practice understanding. DEEP BREATHS. DEEP CLEANSING BREATHS. But I can't. I'm too annoyed at the prospect of FIERY WRECKAGE. I honestly would've been happier if Rayna was the one missing. I choose to believe Juliette's plane landed ten minutes later and they got married later that night after ordaining a nearby TSA employee via the Internet. Then she won the Oscar in a recount, and mistaken winner Marisa Tomei delivered it to her personally. THE END.

I rage because I care, Nashville. And I rage because I'm going to miss you so damn much. When are the reunion concerts?

## Get Well Hayden

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-28.png)

I just wanted to leave with a shot of Hayden. I remain, as ever, appalled that she didn't get more industry-wide accolades for her work on this show. It goes to show what a flawed process it is that people assume the only good work being done on TV is in the juggernauts. Hayden Panettiere could act rings around everyone on Blindspot or Quantico, the main "hits" of the fall season. The Golden Globes are the only awards show doing interesting things with the acting nominations. People make fun of the HFPA -- hell, so do I -- but even if they're for sale, at least they give off the impression of having a wide range of interests.

I can't wait to see Hayden healthy and happy and back at work again. She can do pretty much anything, so she ought to be high on everyone's list once she's back out there. I can't wait to see with whom she decides to tango next.

[Fug the Show: Nashville recap, series finaleWell, here it is: The last Nashville episode. I hate that it's ending. I hate the way it ended. And I hate some of the things it did during its lifetime. But on the whole? And even so? I really loved this show. It did a LOT of small things right and a couple of big things brilliantly too. Like Deacon's consistency, even when he was maddening. Like Maddie and Daphne, even when SHE was maddening. Like Will Lexington's entire slow burn, and the redevelopment of Avery, and Juliette Barnes' entire existence, and GLENN, sweet Glenn. That they created characters who feel SO familiar to me -- who, to a man, I felt I knew well enough that I COULD get mad when I felt like they were acting unusually -- is a wonderful rarity. And much like when Hart of Dixie departed, I'm going to miss them. It's going to be awhile before I stop wondering what Juliette is doing. Long may Hayden Panettiere reign, even if it's not here anymore.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/05/nashville-recap-season-4-series-finale-1.png)](https://go-fug-yourself.ghost.io/fug-the-show-nashville-recap-series-finale-05-2016/)
