## Opulentlander

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bf/b9/bfb99790-924d-4e41-a7e6-5e3c6e04fe57/content/images/static-gofugyourself-com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-1-e1461702640837.jpg)

As you know, Outlander buttons its main titles with the director's credit over a series of shots that highlight something that you'll see in the episode later, but in a different and impersonal context. This is one of those, and I wonder if they did it because it's the best look at this costume -- much better than anything we were given in-scene. Exquisite work.

The main titles ALSO feature a LOT of shots of swords whacking each other, and snakes, and in one case, a close-up on a man's elaborately garbed abdomen as he dances. Just in case you weren't sure whether this show is extremely sexual.

## Nightmarelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-2.jpg)

Poor Jamie is having a difficult time shedding Jack Randall's memory. We open on some surprisingly tame Jamie/Claire sex, and it's because she quickly turns into Randall and Jamie violently murders him... and then wakes up sweating. Claire tells him that this too shall pass, but he's not comforted. She MIGHT be a little worried he's going to violently murder HER while he's in one of those vivid-dream states. I live with a vivid-dream sleeper, and although murder has never been on the table, I did once catch him clawing at his pillow and claiming he was rescuing the boys from some kind of butter explosion. He acted awake when I confronted him, and funnily, he even REMEMBERS thinking, "I need to convince her I'm awake so that she'll go away and let me get back to rescuing the boys from all the butter." Unfortunately, Sleep Kevin handled this by offering me a pillow with a cherubic grin and saying, "Here, take your son!!!" So the jig was up. And if it hadn't been up then, it would have been two seconds later when he then flopped down on the bed, patted the OTHER pillow, and said, "Don't worry. Just keep pretending to be butter until your mother leaves." Good times.

I'm pretty sure he won't get too mad at me for telling that story, given that we tell EVERYONE that story.

## Diorlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-4.jpg)

This is the gown Terry Dresbach based on an iconic Dior design from the '40s called the Bar Suit. I loved the reasoning for this choice. The intellectual effort behind these details is astounding and wonderful, and whether you agree with the rationale or not, the fact that there IS some there is really cool. No decisions are casual or careless.

## Raymondlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-5.jpg)

Claire here makes friends with an apothecary named Master Raymond, who dabbles in all kinds of weird herbs (and often cheats people out of, say, the poisons they seek, by giving them diarrhea-inducing meds instead). [The description of how they came up with his coat is wonderful, too, and well worth a read](https://www.terrydresbach.com/master-raymond/?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). Claire sees through him and knows his art almost as well as he does; indeed, she's quite fluent in the powers of various extracts, so I guess her Healer classes in the 30s and 40s were extremely extensive. He calls her "Madonna," and it's a shame neither one of them knows what images that would conjure in today's times. Also sometimes I imagine our Madonna having an entire apothecary in her attic, staffed by a person who looks just like this.

## Swordlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-6.jpg)

Jamie is trying to rehab his cobbled-together hand, so Murtagh is dueling with him -- though after he frightens off the gaping French aristos, they switch to hand-to-hand horseplay. They feel like that's curing their homesickness, or something. Which is EXACTLY how Jessica and I do it. When we're away for long periods of time, she pile-drives me into the floor and we're like, "Ah, much better."

## Hotlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-7.jpg)

For your meme generator.

## Booblander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-8.jpg)

Claire's cleavage is struggling with this particular corset. What they are NOT struggling with is their mission: Cousin Jared, on a break from digging chocolate diamonds out of dirt patches, has arranged a meeting between "Lord Broch Tuarach Jamie Frazer" (his full title for you) and Bonnie Prince Charlie. That was... easy. I know they're somewhat hamstrung by how the books developed, and obviously there are eleventy more of those, so Diana Gabaldon was not worried about burning through plot. But getting them to Prince Charlie so early is a little weird; a LOT is being handed to hem. I suppose when you know the outcome will be MISERABLE you might as well do them some favors in the early going.

## Hookerlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-10.jpg)

Jamie's meeting with the Prince is at his favorite house of ill-repute, and the prostitutes there are better-dressed than many celebrities are today.

## Dildolander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-11.jpg)

The madam is pimping -- er, promoting -- the acquisition of dildos, so their male customers' wives can pleasure themselves while the men come sample other fleshly ladywares. I hope someone did an interview with the propmaster about how this. I want to know if there are 18th Century Dildo binders lying around the production office, and YES, I did type "prodiction" by accident the first time.

## Doltlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-12.jpg)

The Bonnie Prince turns out to be a complete loser. The theme song to the show uses Robert Louis Stevenson's poem about the Bonnie Prince, although both it and in fact Stevenson's original leave out the verse that goes, "Bonnie Prince C? No genius is he! More like Chuckles the Clown. Doughy of brain, he'll get 'em all slain, and bring a whole country down."

Anyway, Jamie tries to convince Charlie that the HIghlanders aren't ready for rebellion because they're doing too much in-fighting, and that an uprising at this point would be a lost cause. Charlie responds with blind zeal that GOD HAS WILLED IT that a Catholic sit on the throne of England, and that he knows Divine Right will win out. He's also way into whores. And while I can't say for sure whether the Bonnie Prince was this much of an arrogant dolt, it does sound like his stubborn belief in his own correctness led to some terrible battlefield decisions.

## Sighlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-13.jpg)

Jamie's shell-shocked face is like, "I canna ken that we EVER put our fair country in the hands of that gibbering balloon of a man."

He also might be having trouble keeping up with what has become a chain of "Okay, you met me, now go meet THIS person." Here, Prince Charlie has told him to go chat up Louis XV's finance minister, Monsieur Duverney, about getting the King to fund the Jacobite strike. Jamie might need to watch some crime dramas, because he could use an Evidence Board to keep track of all this.

## Robelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-14.jpg)

Claire's robe is AMAZING. It's constantly at the foot of her bed, and she's forever waking up in the night and grabbing it and flinging it dramatically over her shoulders. I hope Caitriona Balfe steals this once all is said and done.

## Thighlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-15.jpg)

For her part, Claire has befriended a saucy French lady named Louise, Marquise de Rohan, [who seems to have been a real person](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise%5Fde%5FRohan?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). Louise is our window into the free, opulent French society -- the languid wealth that became the basis for the people's unrest -- and we witness this via her having a casual conversation with Claire while being waxed. She's in a robe that covers her, but doesn't; she even, to provoke her mousy English charge (whom you'll meet on the next slide), spreads her legs and grins gleefully as she prepares for a Brazilian wax. The impression I get of her is that she's a provocateur, but almost out of boredom or rebellion -- her gilded cage is, at heart, unsatisfying, so she takes her thrills where she can find them.

## Frownyfacelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-16.jpg)

Mary Hawkins here is, I believe, being introduced into society by Louise because her uncle is supposed to marry her off to a French nobleman. She has a stammer, and is HUGELY uncomfortable with just about everything and everyone, although Claire tries to treat her with sympathy. Also, to be honest, I don't blame her for being a little off-kilter. I would be very startled if I went to a friend's house and she was like, "Just sit there while Giancarlo waxes my genitals."

## Honeylander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-18.jpg)

Claire, being a modern woman, decides to give the ol' hairless cat a try. She mischievously invites Jamie's touch, and poor Sam Heughan has to give a start and then say, "Your honey pot is... bare!" He then later refers to it as her "lovely forest." Who knew Jamie was so into euphemisms. I hope that by episode 10 he's like, "Your soup tureen is empty!"

The two of them start to have sex, but Jack Randall's unwanted mug comes back to the fore, and Jamie rears up angrily, then blinks and sees Claire again. They agree to abandon ship. I feel like Claire might have suggested he warm back up to her form with a little oral action -- like, perhaps if his anatomy isn't directly involved, he'll tune back into her pleasure and then Randall will slowly fall away. But she doesn't. I know she has to pace herself here with him, but I do miss some of her sexual feistiness.

## Dresslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-19.jpg)

And then this. Claire says she helped design this with Louise's couturier, and it's designed for maximum impact at Versailles when they visit King Louis's court (because of course they've already snagged an invitation). The BFD here is that she goes without corseting, and her dress is cut Down To There; Jamie's eyes fall out of his head, and even Murtagh is like, "I should look away, but I can't, but I should, but I can't."

## Versailleslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-21.jpg)

Here, I just wanted you to have a shot of the room they're using for Versailles. I assume it's a set-- they built a lot of them in Scotland -- but it could be a real French location as well, as they did shoot some in Paris. This also gives you the full extent of how much Claire's dress stood out in a sea of other opulent fabrics. I'm not clear on the psychology of WHY Claire chose that -- like, why is she as a person, a time-traveling 20th century lass stuck 200 years behind her time, so desirous of standing out above all others? Because as much as they want to make the required connections, they're also there to conduct some sneaky business and so you might think she would prefer to blend in rather than create drama. I'm curious how the books delve into that.

## Cleavlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-20.jpg)

This gives you a GREAT perspective on why the dress is especially scandalous. I assume Claire MacGyver'd herself some 18th-century boob tape. I'd have liked to see that. Actually, never mind; Louis XV's court would not have done ANYTHING to guard against a nip slip. You'd probably be arrested for treason for even considering such modest practicality.

## Pastlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-22.jpg)

This is Annalise de Maurillac, an old girlfriend of Jamie's from when he attended the University of Paris. By the way, Jamie's time at school in France is something I COMPLETELY missed about his backstory. (The Outlander Wiki also says he spent two years in the French army?!? Who knew.) So he speaks good French, and has A Mysterious Past with this young woman who is QUITE thrilled to see him and calls him her "little savage." Harumph. That feels slightly condescending to me, as if what's savage about him is his Scots side. Also her sleeves are massive. Don't trust a woman whose sleeves are bigger than your head.

## Ummmhmmmlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-24.jpg)

Jamie's expression, as he tries to explain Annalise to Claire, is deeply amusing to me. It reminds me of the noises Edie McClurg makes in "Ferris Bueller" when she's trying to pretend she's Ed Rooney.

## Amusedlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-23.jpg)

Claire's reaction is equally fantastic. She's not the least bit threatened, but rather DEEPLY amused, both at Jamie's discomfort and at the sight of some trifling piffle of a backstory rearing its head. Here, you can really see how much spillage is taking place with the bodice of this dress. And what's interesting about THAT is, the "Outlander" folks released early preview shots of the dress, and fans were ENRAGED for a few reasons. One, because they wanted to see it for the first time the way Jamie does, which is a great point actually, and two...

## Presslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-29.jpg)

... because the promo pictures depict a dress that doesn't match. The books explain that you could see Claire's ribs and that she's uncorseted; int he show, that is borne out, but this version appears to meet neither condition. I'm VERY intrigued by this, and I wonder if they did a sanitized/Photoshopped version for mass press coverage -- one that focuses less on the raciness and more on the splendor. I mean, it's POSSIBLE it's the same, and they just worked the angle carefully? But I have gone back and forth between the two slides and this one feels enormously altered both from a color/lighting perspective and the way the neckline falls. So I can see why fans were bristling.

## Crapslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-25.jpg)

Louis XV is constipated. I know this because Jamie is -- of course -- immediately invited into the chamber where Louis is dressed, which was considered an ENORMOUS honor. It's called the King's *lever*, or also *levee*, and it's the ritual of him getting up and ready after being woken, which I've read about mostly in conjunction with a morning rise but could also take place after a nap. Anyway, obviously Jamie has gotten every possible access with an ease that diametrically opposes the passing of the Royal Stool, and he works his way to the front of the assembled crowd and discovers Louis on the pot trying in vain to give a royal order to his intestinal tract. Jamie wins them all over by suggesting that the King eat some porridge, aka Scotland's Activia. Only on Outlander would there be a LENGTHY constipation scene. Although when you consider how many women have to fake childbirth for film and TV, at the risk of their own facial blood vessels, it seems only fair that this man has to push like he's trying to move a tractor with his bare hands.

## Scandalelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-26.jpg)

Meanwhile, Louise and Claire observe Mary Hawkins flirting with a young man. Or being flirted with, or both. She's livelier with them than she ever has been with Claire or Louise, and honestly, I don't blame her. Especially because Louise represents her betrothal to a VERY old French dude, and I'm sure Mary finds her nerve-wracking by association.

## Frenchy Frenchlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-28.jpg)

M. Duverney is so Frenchy French about his leering at Claire that you almost expect him to say, "Haw haw HAWWWW." But he's also very entertaining. Louise has allowed him to think Claire might want to fluff his wig, so to speak, so he finds her outside and goes straight on the prowl. She stares at him in astonishment as he first makes his lust and intentions clear, then bends down and all but motorboards her. It struck me as uncharacteristic of Claire to sit there and sigh and not even really try to get a word out that would have cut short that whole fiasco. She seemed sort of bemused, as one would be, but more like she was contemplating whether she should swat away a fly or just let it crawl around for a while because life is sacred.

## Shoelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-27.jpg)

His explorations do, at least, reveal the FANTASTIC shoes she is wearing. I covet them deeply. He does as well. And, in another move that downplays Claire's independence and worldliness, nothing happens until Jamie comes by and grabs him and tosses him over the balcony into the river. At which point Claire simply seems to bite her lip, all, "Oh, dear, you've done it now." Maybe she was worried about offending a man they've been asked to sweet-talk -- but whom they really need to do the OPPOSITE of what Charlie wants -- but don't you think an explanation would have been less risky than Jamie's wrath?

Luckily, everyone is cool about it, and they win his friendship by promising discretion. "If my wife caught me trying to make love with yet another woman..." he intones, before making the throat-slitting gesture. "She need never know," beams Claire patronizingly, and besties are born.

## Laughslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-33.jpg)

Well, at least it yields this: His wig is obviously savaged by the water, and while he's trying to dry it out, the King appears. Duverney has no choice but to plonk it back atop his head and hope for the best. Dude, this is what my hair wants to do ALL THE TIME.

## Louislander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-31.jpg)

Louis XV has managed to extract his waste plug, it seems, because he's all dressed and ready to party. You'll also notice his main mistress with him, who is wearing an elaborate costume that they crafted based on the book's description -- and which involved making a mold of the actress's breasts after groping her extensively for the fit, so they could simulate elaborately pierced breasts (the shapes are meant to evoke a swan). She is a good sport. For what it's worth, her reward is being the most memorable and screen-grabbed moment of Outlander, so that's not the worst trade.

## Starelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-32.jpg)

Murtagh cannot tear away his eyes. The costumer pointed out that this was intentional -- basically, nobody else in the room is fazed at all, but Claire gives a little eyebrow raise (I think) and Murtagh is transfixed. I don't know why Jamie seemed so chill with it, but then again, we don't know what he got up to in University in Paris. (Other than that it didn't involve actual sex.) Maybe he saw nipple piercings ALL THE TIME.

## Nipslander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-34.jpg)

Now THAT'S how you do swans, Bjork.

## Callowlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-35.jpg)

Simon Callow is back as the dastardly, bastardly Duke of Sandringham (not an actual position in the peerage, so there's no real-life version). In season one, Jamie tried to convince him to help get that wrongful murder charge lifted and the Duke agreed -- but then never did anything about it, and may even have sold them out to Randall. His allegiances are murky, basically, and the Outlander Wikis all note that he is gay and once tried to climb into bed with Jamie when Jamie was 16, which I can't recall if they covered in season one, and the Wikipedia entry on Outlander characters refers to him as "Old Willie the arse bandit." I hope that's canon.

Anyway, once Claire dispatches with Jamie, she turns to talk to the Duke and that's when he reveals a surprise...

## Randalllander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-36.jpg)

... namely, that his new secretary -- who had just been so intrigued by Mary Hawkins -- is one Alex Randall, brother of Black Jack. The casting department really nailed finding a kid who could pass for Tobias Menzies's kinder relation.

This brings about two reveals: One, hearing this makes Claire flash back to Frank studying his family tree, where it was learned that "Jonathan Randall," aka Black Jack, married one Mary Hawkins. And when she comes to, chipper young Alex reveals that Black Jack is still very much alive despite having sustained injuries that they're pretending were from combat. Claire promptly shits enough bricks to build King Louis an outhouse.

## Rascallander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-37.jpg)

And Simon Callow walks away while deploying the MOST amazing mic drop of a facial expression. He knows he's just blown apart their world, and he is LOVING IT. "YA BURNT, CLAIRE," it says.

Claire here chooses not to tell Jamie, because she thinks it'll send him back to Scotland in search of doomed vengeance. But she also reflects that she, in her subconscious, had to know that Randall hadn't died because he hadn't begotten Frank's ancestors yet. This, however, is terrible time-travel logic because obviously Claire is now actively changing the future and so anything COULD have happened, and Randall COULD have died, and Frank COULD have been erased from existence like one of Marty McFly's brothers. If she means to change the Culloden outcome, she certainly could have changed this.

But she does make mention of Frank here as "her husband" in another century, and says Randall has to live another year in order to spawn his ancestors, which is fairly big of her. I guess she doesn't WANT Frank Randall to disappear off the face of the planet, but it implies a lingering affection for him as well.

## Vestlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-38.jpg)

In episode three, we learn Jamie isn't sleeping, because he's gallivanting around between Versailles and the brothel trying to get everyone on his side and finagle information and yada yada yada. Claire is bored out of her mind because none of this involves her, so all she can do is have tea with the ladies and sit around the house and do all the chores her ladies' maid would rather take care of for her (said maid decides to use that idle time by straddling Murtagh, which keeps everyone out of trouble). We also learn Jamie is missing a carved snake charm from his youth which he keeps in his 18th century fanny pack. And you think, "Zzz," and even his household servants seem disinterested in the great search for the wooden snake, but it does come back up later. NOT A EUPHEMISM. Although I'm sure that comes back up too.

## Timidlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-39.jpg)

Mary Hawkins has heard the most GHASTLY rumor about French men, namely that they take their protrudey bits and jam them into a lady's private hole (that's barely even a paraphrase; she is totally incapable of discussing the birds and the bees). She is CERTAIN English men, nor sensitive Scottish dreamboats like Jamie, would ever engage in such a barbaric practice. Louise laughs in her face. Claire gently offers to explain a few things to her, although given that she becomes Bride of Black Jack, I hope that Claire explained things wrongly so that Black Jack will in future be uncomfortable and pained by Mary's technique.

## Gownlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-40.jpg)

This is just to show you Louise's gown, which is another marvel of costuming. But not as good as what we're about to get...

## Artlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-43.jpg)

I MEAN. That is just glorious. This shot could easily be an oil painting hanging in one of the world's richest museums.

## Capelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-42.jpg)

It obviously has a matching hooded cloak. It's just gorgeous. The man hours that must have gone into this...

## Librarylander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-44.jpg)

And this room is terrible and not at all like something I would like in my own home, ever, at all. Jamie is there demolishing Monsieur Duverney at chess -- a date they made at Versailles when Murtagh pointed out that Jamie is "a master" and Jamie modestly replied, "I've been known to brood over a board or two," making chess to Jamie what basketball on the River Court is to Chad Michael Murray on One Tree Hill: the site of all his best healing.

Jamie here needs to convince the older man to come meet with the Bonnie Prince at Madame Naughty's brothel and decline to proffer the King's funds for the rebellion -- again citing his protectiveness of the clans in Scotland and what he claims are their unreadiness for organized rebellion. Duverney agrees, but suggests Jamie might consider losing at chess a few times in return.

## Comtelander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-45.jpg)

Just in case you wondered: Le Comte de St. Germain is still EEEEEEEVILLLL, and also associates with Claire's apothecary friend. So she bumps into him and they have a curt, chilly exchange of DEEP-ROOTED EEEEEVIL, and then he leaves (and she picks up the 18th-c equivalent of the Morning After pill for her maid, because Murtagh was like, "Safe sex what now?").

## Maroonlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-46.jpg)

Master Raymond tells Claire she should put her skills to use at a volunteer hospital run from a convent, and so she does. She picks a hugely impractical outfit -- in fairness, all her outfits would be, but that massive Violet Beauregard of a scarf looks like a special kind of hindrance -- and makes Murtagh drive her over and wait while she tends to the sick and wounded. Well, mostly the wounded, and anyone with a disease she knows she can't catch, like diabetes ("sugar sickness"). It will not surprise you that Claire is the healingest healer that ever healed, and makes herself indispensable immediately.

## Locationlander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-47.jpg)

You need to see the horrific location they've picked for this hospital. Completely the pits. What misery.

## Charlielander

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2016/04/outlander-recap-season-2-episode-2-3-48.jpg)

The Bonnie Prince delivers a surprise at the meeting with Duverney: He claims to have substantial funding from three English donors, and that he needs only a pittance from Louis XV to make the rebellion a reality, offering in return a majestic alliance between England and France. (Claire later muses, "That's odd, England and France don't become allies until much later," and NO KIDDING, Claire; the alliance would only have come to pass if the Jacobites won, which you already know they didn't, so...)

## Dubiouslander

Jamie can barely contain his reaction - that being, the existence of any other funding caught him COMPLETELY by surprise. The Bonnie Prince characterizes it as "shock and relief," and Jamie's like, "Um, yes, those are two words that exist," and then watches as Duverney effectively seals the pact by kissing the prince's hand.

## Curlslander

When Jamie gets home, Claire is still out, and he doesn't know where she is. So he sets about trying to solve the problem of the mystery donors himself, but even despite superior curl formation, he cannot do it. He becomes angrier and angrier, and when Claire gets home, he unloads on her. He's furious that he couldn't problem-solve this with her instantly and at his bidding, and casts aspersions on her being off healing people instead of having tea. I'm not sure why that's a more acceptable form of passing time, given that it seems MORE frivolous, although he does express passing concern for the wee bairn picking up a disease. Claire does a weak job explaining that she's bored out of her corset and needed to put her mind to good use while Jamie was doing all his spying, but does note that she wanted something fulfilling in her life; he points out that HE would very MUCH like that chance but can't have it because he's forced to endure all these intolerable idiots while trying to prevent the annihilation of his people. I wish Claire had said directly to him, "I would LOVE to take on some of that BUT I CAN'T and I refuse to sit at home all day," but whatever. She came fairly close. He's not going to become that progressive overnight, and he's always been a wee moody.

This was cool: The brothel has an artist paint the back of a naked lady to look like her front, and her front to look like her behind. I cannot imagine how long that took on-set, but it's visually amazing.

## Dodgerlander

At the brothel, Jamie notices an enterprising young pickpocket and later chases him down and folds him into The Cause. (The kid had indeed stolen Jamie's snake. STILL NOT A EUPHEMISM.) His job is to steal letters between various parties so that Jamie can copy them and study them for clues, and in exchange, he will put up the thief and pay him a little and otherwise not rat on him to the brothel madam. They decide to call him Fergus because it sounds manlier than his French name, and so Fergus it is. When he meets Claire, she's in her filmy nightie, so he politely compliments her breasts -- which I guess he also said to the maid, who was thoroughly charmed by it. Jamie barely says two words to Claire, and I wish she'd let him have it for being a stubborn brute, but instead she just sighs and goes back to bed.

## Codelander

And now we learn that Jamie is a codebreaking whiz. CONVENIENT! He's cracking all kinds of ciphers in these letters, but not uncovering anything useful. Then Murtagh finds a piece of music that's been sent from a German address, or something, and they need someone both musical and German-speaking to deal with it. Ergo...

... Mother Hildegarde, who runs the hospital, comes into play. She sits down and tootles on her harpsichord and notices immediately that the piece repeats the same basic musical phrase but changing the key -- wihch it does five or six times. \["[Don't modulate the key then not debate with me](https://genius.com/Lin-manuel-miranda-farmer-refuted-lyrics?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)!" Jamie thunders at his faceless adversary.\] She also goes on and on about a J.S. Bach with whom she's friends, and how his compositions lack heart and aren't built to last. Har har, Outlander. It could only have been better if she used the words "climb," "ev'ry," and "mountain."

## Dreadlander

Anyhoo, Jamie later uses this intel to crack the code, which means:

1) He's decided it's okay for Claire to work at the hospital, because it was useful to him;

2) He learns the Duke of Sandringham might actually be behind raising these funds, playing both sides so that he'll win whatever the outcome;

3) He is so overjoyed to have a real clue that he kisses Claire on the mouth; and

4) Claire completely ignores Murtagh's urging to tell him that Jack Randall is alive -- because if Jamie has to circulate with the Duke, then he'll hear it from the Duke AND be aware Claire hid it from him -- because she can't bear to hurt Jamie when he's so delighted. I think Claire is smarter than to let Jamie find out another way, so I will be bummed if that is how it comes to pass, but I certainly get her not having the heart to slice Jamie open that way. Claire Fraser, your lustrous hair is officially full of secrets.

[Fug the Show: Outlander recaps, "Not in Scotland Anymore" and "Useful Occupations and Deceptions" (S2 E2 and E3)This is long, I know -- it's two episodes rolled together -- but there is LOTS of eye candy thanks to the costuming. Not just That Red Dress, but also the nippletastic gown an extra wears at Versailles, a wet wig, and a great robe. Also, there are dildos. They appear on slide nine, and they're not in USE or anything, but they are there -- so blow past... er, shoot past... oh, never mind. Skip it if you need. They are intricate dildos, and we appreciate intricacy in all its forms, but I understand that not everyone's workplaces will value an artistic sexual aid. You should know that Terry Dresbach has been posting some amazing content pertaining to her Outlander work, beginning with this analysis of what they did in episode one (our recap lives here) and an extensive Mood Board for the whole season. Her piece about these episodes links a particular costume to a Christian Dior design of the 1940s, with this nifty analysis: "In season two Claire has made the choice not to go back to the 1940s. \[...\] There is a commitment to a time a place and a marriage. She is committing to remaining in a time that is not hers. But the heart of the story is still Claire, and how she maintains that heart in another century. This is not the story of the woman who gives up her identity easily. So it seemed essential that once again we look back to the 1940s for our inspiration." This stuff really appeals to the side of me that did so much historical research for our alternate Royal We family tree. As usual: If you've read the books, please refrain from discussing events that are coming. Events that have already transpired, and the differences in how they're portrayed, are totally fair game as long as they don't tip what's coming.
