# Fug the Show: Pretty Little Liars' Film Noir Episode recap (season 4, episode 19)

## Spencer

The main plot of the episode: Spencer spaces out after taking her pills and ends up hallucinating this whole black-and-white world, wherein they find out Alison is alive and living as a showgirl somewhere or something, and she struggles with realizing/proving/telling Aria that Ezra is A, which is what she has to do in real life.

Troian looks LUMINOUS in this episode -- she glows.

## Spencer

I MEAN. She is divine here in the vintage nightie. I really think it's possible that there's nothing Troian Bellisario can't wear. She has made Spencer the best, in all things.

## Spencer

I MEAN, Part II: Electric MEANaloo. This fur might be a little aggressive on her but the fact that it still really WORKS is a testament to the powers of Troian.

## Spencer

And this is the last in the I MEAN trilogy, which I wish I could bring to you in 3D, like the third Jaws installment. Alas.

## Toby

Not Toby. He looks the part, but... Keegan Allen, I think, did better on this show when Toby's motives were creepy and questionable.

## Emily and Hanna

Emily looks fantastic, Hanna looks eight miles wide. Hanna has been shown eating a lot -- think Brad Pitt in "Ocean's Eleven" -- and in one of the next episodes they actually have Hanna draw attention to her snacking and take a light teasing about it from Emily. ("I eat when I'm nervous." "I thought it was when you were sad." "I get sad when I'm nervous.") If they're NOT subtly and slowly going back to Hefty Hanna, then they need to dress Ashley Benson better and also stop having H be self-conscious about her snacking. PEOPLE EAT. IT HAPPENS.

## Aria

Lucy Hale gets to be in this cute stripey dress/suit thingamy the whole episode, and it's good except a smidge snug in the ribcage area. But in general she looked rather fab.

## Paige

Emily and Paige get a storyline about... two ladies realizing they're feeling Forbidden Love. It's a lot of screen time spent on something that has no bearing on the plot because they've ALREADY realized in real life that they are in love. It REALLY exposes this as a filler hour, although there are also lots of screen wipes and old-timey music stings, so at least that's fun. Poor Paige gets stuck with the most laughable of the old hair, though. She looks like a cross between a milkmaid and someone who's wearing Bugles snacks on her head.

## Emily and Paige

For two women who are wondering if the world will accept their same-sex passion, they're awfully free about making out in front of a window, no matter how beautiful the lighting and framing is. HOWEVER: They actually get a dishy love scene, with Emily being tossed down on the bed and everything. So bravo for THAT. And Paige actually gives a really wonderful performance in the moments prior to this, where she and Emily confess their love for one another and Emily tells a tearful and scared Paige not to be afraid.

## Mona

There's some shenanigans with Hanna and Spencer confronting Mona and Ezra, and Mona wears this horrible gown that looks like a super old Maidenform bra that's been glittered up. But it DOES lead to an awesome moment wherein Hanna snatches a carrot stick out of Mona's cocktail as a parting shot, and after the door closes, Mona turns to Ezra and says, "Just so you know..., THAT WAS THE LAST CARROT STICK." And there's a music sting. It's amazing. Easily my favorite part of the show, and that is how I shall end conversations forever now. BULL TRUE.

## Alison

I thought Sasha Pieterse and Ashley Benson would do well in the retro motif, but the styling on both of them left me cold. Sasha does at least have good Veronica Lake hair here...

## Alison

But then here, she looks like a kid playing dress-up. Which she IS, because she's anywhere from six to ten years younger than the rest of the cast (she's 18; Spencer is 28; Emily, 26; Mona, 25; the other two, 24), so unfortunately she IS the most apt to look like a kid dressing up. But I hate the hair in this shot, and the outfit makes her look like a bad mermaid.

## Hanna

Hanna's hair here looks a little half-assed, too. Like she got rained on.

Is that coat entirely appropriate? It seems a little too modern-cute.

## The Liars, sans Aria

All of this folds into: They find Alison's missing diary in Ezra's desk, and see Mona going in there and walking out with a bunch of file folders. After her informative reverie -- much more fun than a coma, at least, a la One Tree Hill -- Spencer deduces that Ezra (or someone) planted the journal for them to find, because certain details have been changed. Spence knows this because she photographed pages from the old one and can compare. In her dream, Alison also confronts them about being too cowardly to tell Aria the truth, and so when the three girls go to do so, they discover her making out with Ezra; they didn't know the two of them were back together. So now it's going to be twice as hard.

Not helping matters: Hanna's dress, another cheap-looking one, although at least Spencer is back to wearing large animals. This time, she has a fox head over each boob, and dammit, she makes THAT make sense, too. Troian B has magic powers.

Sadly, it's just in the noir hallucination. On Monday, we'll recap the other two episodes around this, but since this is plot-lite and visually pretty, I figured I'd do this one first on its own -- it's literally JUST clothes and stylized shots and not much real plot. The look is lovely; they clearly had fun with this, and Troian Bellisario was born to be in a black-and-white period piece in which she plays a plucky lass. More importantly, this hour has inspired me to start saying, "THAT WAS THE LAST CARROT STICK," every time I finish a conversation that didn't go well.
