Larisa Katz

Larisa Katz

This is the traditional slide wherein I note that whomever is standing next to or behind her wants to MURDER. [Larisa is actually a hat designer and shows up every single year in something giant of her own creation -- highly recommend you check them out: here and here.]

Royal Ascot

For one brief, glorious moment I thought this was Susan Sarandon.

Royal Ascot

I love that this women is basically like, "I'm holding this hat on all day if I have to." I feel like 80% of women at Ascot might possibly have one protective hand on her headgear at all times.

Royal Ascot

"Is this too on the nose?" she wondered. "Oh, hell. It's Ascot!"

Royal Ascot

We saw a LOT of Giant Head Flowers, which I always love.

Royal Ascot

This is awesome.

Royal Ascot

I also am amused by the concept of wearing a hat like this and realizing that basically you have to turn your entire body to talk to anyone and also you don't fit into your car.

Royal Ascot

I actually really love this.

Royal Ascot

I swear to god, the one on the right is wearing the centerpiece from a luau. (I do LOVE a hat that seems like it might also contain a snack. That might have a popsicle in there.) The woman on the left is Not Susan Sarandon, right? She is a feathers enthusiast, and bless her for it.

Royal Ascot

I just feel like APPLAUSE for matching your hat and your lipstick and your nails.

Royal Ascot

Someone legit IS going to lose an eye.

Royal Ascot

"Oooh, is it Ascot? No, I had no idea. I just had this morning's gardening go a bit pear-shaped."

Princess Beatrice

I think Bea looks fab in this. The Sisters York almost always bring it in the shoe department, and I love them for that.

Princess Eugenie

WHAT DID I JUST SAY ABOUT SHOES? Footwear screeching aside, I love this wacky dress on Eug. She really is very pretty, I think.

Princess Anne

Anne, looking rather like a glamorous armoire.

Sophie Wessex

I haven't got a better look at Sophie's dress, which is unfortunate, because I think I might really like it. I DO enjoy her hat today.

THE QUEEN

One of the Queen's horses pulled up lame today and had to be taken out in a horse ambulance, which is very concerning, and I'd like to point out that happened after this photo was taken, because she looks much jollier here than I think she was at the end of the day. Last year she won the Gold Cup; maybe she should have repeated the exact same outfit. It works for baseball players!

Fugs and Fabs and Royals and Hats: Royal Ascot Ladies Day
Ah, Ladies Day! When Ascot's Wacky Hats traditionally get the wackiest (and also the setting for one of my favorite lines in The Royal We*). The good news: Both York sisters look very pretty indeed. The bad news: This year, there was sadly no one wearing a topiary of David Beckham's face on her head. (Maybe next year, Your Majesty.) Just to give you MORE HATS, I've tossed in some looks from Days One and Two, as well. TO THE HEADGEAR! * Speaking of which, we have a post up on our book blog about how we rewrote history to get away from the Windsors and to the Lyons dynasty that you might find interesting, if you've read The Royal We. Full family tree and everything! [Photos: Getty]
