I don't love this as much as I did on Saturday, I don't think -- the idea of it still really intrigues me, especially from Herrera, but staring at it now the stitching on the bodice is too aggressive for me. I think that part needed to be plain so that the rest of it could bring the thunder.
Okay: It must be very hard for Ariel to dress a very adult bust-size without veering into very adult clothing (which she has in the past). I have tons of sympathy. And I can't pretend this is successfully fit to her. I wish someone would step up and help her with something custom, or at least customized. If she is feeling self-conscious today about how badly this fit, I would like to console her first with this Scarlett Johansson outfit, and then also THIS ScarJo, which might be the worst crime against breasts in history. But she doesn't have that happen much anymore, so Ariel, this too shall pass. There WILL be dresses. And the one is actually pretty, although I'd prefer it with a waistband and a strapless top.
Whereas this one leaves me STONE COLD.
I mean, unfortunately for her, that thing just looks... really, really, really inexpensive. And it's FINE to wear things that are inexpensive. I am doing it right now. But a) nobody cares what I'm wearing, and b) the key when wearing something inexpensive on the red carpet is to pick something that SURPRISES people when they find out it's inexpensive.
Okay. This. She wore a metallic gown to the Globes after party that was better, and also, near enough to this event that comparisons between the two would be inevitable. So that's unfortunate for this dress. But ALSO, the bodice portion looks like such a heavy, immovable corset. Sofia Vergara doesn't need that much structure. Her body is a force of nature.
You can see what I mean a bit more in this photo -- when she moved, that bodice did not. It was the immovable object. And this dress also does that thing where it comes to a point at her orifaces and then makes it look like fabric is shooting out of them. It's true in the front...
... AND it's true in the back. Although the back is still pretty damn sexy. I just wish the front hadn't been bulletproof.
I love you, Phil Dunphy.
