HARUMPH. (I know, I know, Pepsi is a sponsor, BUT IT IS ALSO A DIRTY WORD IN MY HOUSE.) THEN, Katy opened with "Roar," a song I secretly love on my iPod for working out. And because she is fond of underlining every metaphor and then scribbling in the margins, "Too subtle?", she entered here atop a giant gold lioness (I assume she's a lady because she has no mane, and I like that), and in a dress made of flames. I almost said, "Made of flames like the ones lions breathe." Um. That's DRAGONS, Heather. LIONS ARE REAL ANIMALS. Also, in response to the great debate sweeping our nation: It COULD be tiger, as she name-checks one on the song, but she also mentions roaring "louder than a lion" and that's definitely the audio they picked. When you look at this from the side, it's totally a lion, and in fact, it might have a pseudo mane on it after all, which bums me out because I LIKED the idea of her being on a girl-power lady lion. And now the word "lion" has no meaning to me anymore because I've typed it too many times. I ain't lion. (In fairness to Pete Carroll -- a sentence I have never typed before and never will again -- the rumors that he called That Play because he wanted Russell Wilson to be the hero and not Marshawn Lynch are stupid to me, because he gave Lynch the ball on first and goal from the five, and it's not like he did that and said, "BUT ONLY GAIN FOUR YARDS PLZ K THX." And I can understand wanting the element of surprise -- figuring the Patriots would expect a run play -- but also, again, Marshawn Lynch was on my fantasy team this year and I mean you give that freaking guy the ball. (I actually ALSO secretly love Chess, flaws and all.) I suppose if you think about it, football is a very messy, violent chess match itself, so maybe Katy was going all metaphorical on us. (She was singing "Dark Horse, by the way? Per him, in the Daily Mail I Know -- it was impossible to see in there and later he totally ran into one of the trees. I REALLY wish the camera had caught that. Missy, can you help her? Also, what have you been up to? I miss you, I think. I can't decide if this was smart or foolish on Katy's part. Today, everyone is talking about either Missy or Sharky, and not about her -- but at the same time, sometimes people NOT talking about you is a victory in and of itself. One false move and her synthetic hair might go up like a pile of oil-soaked rags, but she's not worried. All in all, I actually thought this was completely fun. Beyonce's halftime show didn't play to the rafters, for me, and also I'm bored of her. Madonna's just felt a little sad. Bruno Mars's was high -energy and well-performed, but more in the Bruce Springsteen Just Get Up And Dance vein -- which is good, actually. But Katy seemed to hit a sweet spot with both. She sang snippets of her peppiest hits (except for "Dark Horse," I guess) but never too much of them. She kept it moving. She was loud, she was campy, she was silly; she gave you something to look at AND something to hear, the intricacies of which did not require squinting at a monitor because there WERE no intricacies. She smartly tempered the bubblegum parade with Lenny and Missy. She kind of DID have the ol' Something For Everyone. And then sharks. But the best part is, I got a pretty great sample of what it must be like to attend a Katy Perry concert, without having to spend a dime. No, he wasn't. Well, he might have been, but I didn't see him. The story here is that I accidentally had this picture in the same lightbox as the others, and so I downloaded it with the rest, and then decided the juxtaposition was a delight. Although, it's apt. Matthew WAS Mary's firework, and her teenage dream of sorts, and he has kissed girls and he did like it (although not you so much, Lavinia Swire). He also did not wear a seatbelt, so that More You Know PSA would have been helpful for him, as might a NASCAR pit crew. So in that sense this was A Very Matthew Crawley Affair Indeed.
