## The Sister Army

SNIFFLE. The breadth of this man's depravity... vile. But they rose above and they made it a story of bravery.

## The Parkland "March For Our Lives" Kids

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-12-1541469106.jpg)

The escalation in gun violence terrifies me on a daily basis, which is one driving factor behind the way I'm voting today. [Here's the story](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-march-for-our-lives-activists?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), and a quote: *The Parkland students each carry scars. Beyond the visceral trauma and the constant death threats that came daily for some in the wake of the tragedy, and claims that they are “crisis actors” being manipulated by adults, they are asked every day to show leadership, even as leaders become vanishingly rare. Samantha Fuentes, who is 18, still has shrapnel behind her right eye and in her legs and arm. She is the poet of the movement. “The world might be cruel,” she says, “but you don’t have to be. Though it might seem our leaders have forgotten the lives lost, and the TV screens are painted with terror, loss, and discouragement, you must not succumb to silence. To remain voiceless is to remain powerless.”*

## Viola Davis

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-1-1541469120.jpg)

I really don't like the fonts of everyone's names; it looks like they chose a font that the printer didn't have and so it replaced it with Helvetica or something. I'm also not sure that's the best shot of Viola Davis I've ever seen -- there are more at the end of the slideshow -- but she looks like she's being hit by a beam of sunlight, and that, I get. I'll link to her story on another slide because this caption is too long already.

## Chrissy Teigen

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-9-1541469068.jpg)

I do not understand this photo of Chrissy. It is, simply put, terrible. She looks like she has the flu, and it's a really anemic representation of a woman [whose cover story is all about her passion and sass](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-chrissy-teigen?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io): *After a tweet in support of gun control led to threats, Teigen briefly abandoned the platform. It’s a moment she’ll never forget. “That’s when it gets scary, because we have kids,” she says. She and Legend have considered taking things down a notch. “Our lives would be so much easier if we didn’t dabble in politics at all,” she says, “but I don’t want that kind of life. For us, we are willing to take that risk, because we believe in it so passionately.”*

## More Chrissy

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-10-1541469081.jpg)

This one might be even worse? She looks clammy AND she's wearing clothes straight out of a Sears catalog in 1988\.

## Janelle Monae

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-11-1541469093.jpg)

She commands your attention no matter what she's doing or wearing, even if it's bonkers. There's a reason one of our commenters coined J'anelle Sais Quoi. [Click here to read the profile](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-janelle-monae?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), and here's the sample: *“I’m a part of the LGBTQIA community. I’m a black woman. My parents are working class,” she says. None of us, she adds, has “our shit together,” so why not just own it, whatever we are? “We can pull down the fake wallpaper, break the mirror that has been lying to us and making \[us\] believe that we need to be perfect,” she says. “We don’t need to be perfect to be respected.”*

## Betty Reid Soskin

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-3-1541469141.jpg)

Betty, at 97, is the oldest national park ranger in America -- but she is [SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT, and her profile is beyond summation so please just go look](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-betty-reid-soskin?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). But this anecdote is something else: *Power. That is what Betty’s life has always been about. The power of self-determination, of imagination, of civic engagement—and of art, beauty, and love. It was a power that ripened within her with every decade of her life, including the times she felt that she was broken, like early on, when she was the mother of two young children and the family received death threats for being the only black family in the neighborhood. Or more recently, in 2016, when a man broke into her home and stole her presidential coin. (When she caught him in the act, he punched her. So she reached up his “trousers,” as she calls them, and squeezed the hell out of his crown jewels. He fled, and in a few weeks, Betty healed and went back to work to great fanfare, and President Obama sent her a replacement.)*

## Judge Rosemarie Aquilina

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-2-1541469132.jpg)

Rosemarie -- [who seems like a fascinating character](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-judge-rosemarie-aquilina?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) \-- presided over the Larry Nassar case, and delivered an elegant piece of her mind from the bench: *In the crush of attention, she heard from other judges who charged, “You are a disgrace,” and, “How dare you behave like this?” for her rebuke of Nassar from the bench. \[...\] Critics have also argued that this victim-centered approach could turn courts into therapy chambers, but Aquilina can’t think of anything more absurd. “If you’re affected by crime, you should be able to tell a judge. It’s the people’s court, it’s our laws, our community. It’s our Constitution,” she says. “If someone doesn’t like what I do, unseat me. It’s that important.”*

## Kamala Harris

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/Kamala-final-cover-1541469697.jpg)

Kamala has become a pretty visible face in the Senate thanks to her role on the Judiciary Committee, and she's acquitted herself admirably there. (I remember with... I think it was James Comey, when Al Franken got his minutes and just used them to speechify rather than ask a question. By contrast, Kamala always comes so prepared that she can barely get all her questions out in her fixed time.) [Here's her profile](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-kamala-harris?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io) and a short nugget: *“My mother always told me, ‘You may be the first to do many things,’” she says. “‘Make sure you’re not the last.’”*

## Manal al-Sharif

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-5-1541469009.jpg)

She led the push for Saudi women to be allowed to drive without a male guardian: *But it’s a bittersweet victory for al-Sharif: She remains in self-imposed exile, one of many Saudi women activists to leave the country after the ban was lifted for fear of imprisonment. Out of nine of her compatriots, several are still behind bars.* [You can learn more about her here.](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-manal-al-sharif?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)

## Viola

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-7-1541469040.jpg)

We didn't get emailed bonus pictures of anyone but Chrissy and Viola, and far be it from me to deny you more Viola Davis. (Chrissy's, you already saw, and it was just the one.) I LOVE this shot and I think it's better than the cover because you can see MORE power and joy on her face and she doesn't look like she's fighting the light.

## More Viola

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2018/11/glamour-magazine-women-of-the-year-covers-2018-gfy-chrissy-viola-nasser-8-1541469055.jpg)

I do not like this photo, NOR the outfit, so instead let's use this for the informative portion. [Her story is typically great](https://www.glamour.com/story/women-of-the-year-2018-viola-davis?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io); a sample: *“I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this woman,” says her Murder costar Aja Naomi King. “Because, first of all, to be a black actress, and to have watched the evolution of her career, it’s altered the way I have looked at this entire industry. Every time she wins, it feels like success for all of us. Because here’s the face of this beautiful, tall, striking, dark-skinned, natural hair- wearing black woman who is basically saying, ‘I dare you to tell me no.’”*

This, though. She should have that on her wall. We all maybe should.
