I like Dame Helen, and the contrasting pink, but the base dress is a bit meh for me.
However, yes, she did work it, and yes, she definitely knows what she's doing.
Brie Larson in Prada
The word that kept coming to my mind here was "sweet." It is sweet. She looks sweet. It is a miracle that the dress got there and stayed SO sharp and unmussed; the line of that skirt is wonderful. This says, "I am not winning but it's just so NICE TO BE AT SOMETHING AGAIN."
Fantasia Barrino in custom D&G
Meanwhile, regrettably, D&G apparently spent all its time on the bajillion other custom dresses it made for this night and forgot to finish Fantasia's. This is horrid. It's starts out so well - she looks beautiful, it's sleek, it's sexy -- and then we get past her hips and it's like, "OH, SORRY, we ran out of the other fabric but we have this GREAT idea to make it look like there's a big reveal of the rest of your dress coming and then it just... never will. People LOVE a mystery!!!!" That blue material looks like it was in the discount bin.
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
I would have thought this was black, had the woman on the red carpet not said it was navy (later confirmed by Dior's press release, also). She is really going for a simplified style lately.

Further proof! The drape on the back is nice. It's a pretty good dress, honestly -- she was semi-tangential to the proceedings (nominated for No Hard Feelings but definitely not a threat to win) but still appropriately dressy.
J. Smith-Cameron in custom Christian Siriano
She is a complete dish. And she's definitely got a chair with her name on it at Drinks With Broads. Christian did GREAT work here and I wish he'd gotten the call for Fantasia also.
Sukyong Melton and Charles Melton
RDJ is great in Oppenheimer, but I thought Charles Melton might've gained JUST enough steam to beat him. I hope all the Riverdale references don't make snobs of voters. Melton is really, REALLY good in May December. When he's trying to talk about anything complex, he really subtly reverts to a more halting, young-teen style of trying to express himself, getting across that he was effectively stunted at that age. I was so impressed. And he brought his mom! They looked aces and I hope they had fun.
Sunrise Coigney, Mark Ruffalo
He is a HOOT in Poor Things, a movie with great performances and a lot of funny moments that I'm still not sure I can say I liked, exactly? (We'll be talking about all this on DWB in the coming weeks.) But I have never seen him play camp like that. Anyway, MORE people who look nice: these two.

HELLO. He looks like he just got out of bed, in a very hot way. It's giving Johnny Castle getting ready to dirty dance at the Kellermans staff afterparty, to which Baby will carry a watermelon.

I've heard Anatomy of a Fall is great; I think it's next on our list. This is an okay Vuitton; I don't think their better imagineers were tasked with it, but she's carrying it well.
