Berenice Bejo

I'd have been interested in seeing this with some kind of necklace, but it's a REALLY lovely gown. People always say, "Oh, my dress is so comfortable," as they draw in a breath and don't release it for four hours. But this one actually looks like it might be.

This is pretty, and I LOVE the orange purse -- I just don't think those are the right shoe match. Red! Orange! Blue! Anything else! Why is it always the shoes that bring people down?

I am not someone who can just belt things, easy-breezy, because I'm not shaped right for that. Maybe she isn't, either, or else surely she would have done that with this shift; a little shaping would improve it so much; as it is the color is kind of wasted on a glorified smock. Also: shoes. AGAIN.

These appear to be the sparkly versions of the other ones with the white dress; the sparkle is better. I still don't know if I love them with this dress -- I'd almost swap them in with the other and play around here -- but at least the glitter gives them some lightness.

THESE would have worked with that white dress TOO.

I want to like this, but the pants are so wrinkly that it makes it look like she had to wait in the limo line for three hours.

Now THIS is great: awesome shoes, love the orange, love the loose hair... In all, for her first time on the circuit, I'd say she's borne up very well, the need for a foot stylist aside. Parenthetically, you know that's coming -- first it was umbrella wranglers, and next it will be people whose only job is to pair shoes with clothes. And then all those people will end up with reality shows.

Golden Globes Well Played: Berenice Bejo
In The Artist, Berenice Bejo plays a character named Peppy Miller, and she is so good and light and warm and cheery in it that you almost wonder if anyone else COULD have been a person named "Peppy" and had it seem so natural. (Maybe Amy Adams, who pulled off the feat of doing that in Enchanted without being annoying.) She's as adorable on the red carpet as she is in the movie, too, and she's 35-going-on-26. I should probably hate her in that envious WOE IS MY FACE kind of way, but I can't. I at least hope it turns out she bites her nails, or something. [Photos: Getty]
