Viola Davis

Usually I get sort of tired of the whole "jam your leg out the slit" thing on the red carpet, but a) I get that part of it is because they're told to show off all the nuances of their gowns, and b) Viola Davis in general is not a HERE LET ME SHOVE MY BODY PARTS OUT AT YOU kind of person. Even here, she's not so much flashing as just kind of acknowledging. Anyway, I thought she looked rather lovely, maybe would've considered jazzier earrings, and love her for never being afraid to go bold with her hues. Yeah, this dark red isn't SHOCKING, but it's not your usual red either, and then consider these:

Love.

This might even be the same dress, deployed a day earlier in screaming pink. ALSO love. That seems so regular to me, in an endearing way -- who hasn't, at least once, been like, "OMG, I love this, GIVE ME FIVE OF THEM." I still sometimes do that at The Gap. I'm a sucker for a two-fer. So it's very humanizing when it happens to someone in Hollywood. Like, remember that four-year period where Kirsten Dunst wore the exact same pair of shoes in either black, beige, or red? That is the EXTREME version of this.

This is cool, too -- a tad funkier, with great shoes. She is fabulous. I remember thinking that back when she was nominated for Doubt, too, so here's hoping that whatever happens with Mr. Oscar in February, she's back on the circuit for years to come in every color of the rainbow.

Golden Globes Well Played Carpet: Viola Davis
I thought Viola had the Globe in the bag -- she won several things in the run-up -- and then drunk Meryl swooped in and snatched it. Even she seemed sort of surprised by that. But Meryl's speech was so awful and interminable and kind of rude (Smashed Streep can be fun, but I swear she called SWINTON "Gilda" and that veered it into smug disrespect for me) that I wonder if suddenly no one else will want to put another statuette in her hand this year. Hang in there, Viola -- Oscar gold could still be yours. And even if not, at least you eschewed "sexy Temple Grandin" for "glowing Viola Davis who probably knew the names of all the people in her category." That's arguably a better win anyway.
