## Beyonce in Michael Costello

This was designed by former Project Runway contestant Michael Costello, which is a huge get for him, and all credit to Beyonce: Her workout regimen is basically the only thing that works here. It's a lacy/nude combo that we've seen a lot before, and in fact is an echo of things Jennifer Lopez has done repeatedly AND which Paris Hilton wore on this very night's red carpet. So there's little originality on display here, which puts all the onus on Beyonce's bod; to its credit, it delivers on its part of the bargain. Also, she performed before this, which may account for the wet-look hair. I LOVE the bob, hate the ombre, and am very pleased she thought to put on red lipstick because it's perfect. The little things count.

But then suddenly Beyonce turns sideways and it's like she got caught having sex in her boyfriend's grandmother's craft room and is trying to cover herself in doilies.

And then you start to peer through the netting and can see all the inner workings of the dress, like when you're at the theater and you're seated so far to the side that you can see into the wings. It's intriguing, but it takes you out of the moment.

And then from the back it's like SIGH, I wish my butt could hold its own like that, but I also wish she'd put hers in something less been-there-done-that-hated-it-the-first-time.

And then the netting also looks sort of cheap. So in sum, I tried to give this a chance -- feeling like, well, we're stuck with these sorts of dresses; maybe I should adapt -- but it's a total Monet. Beyonce gave it her best but I don't think this was a good choice, at all, and also, you're Beyonce, so why do something that's so tired?

I have to say... I don't have anything against Beyonce. I am very neutral on her, generally. But I AM bored of this idea that I'm supposed to think she and Jay-Z are the be-all, end-all of the universe. I thought the song they sang was horrible, and I find her a little smug at times when she's with Jay-Z. I don't know. I'm sure it's just me, and that's fine. I just am not really buying what they're selling together (and I like her better by herself). However, I am buying the fact that -- as Jess noted to me -- I wish I could have that butt without having to get off my couch or stop eating.

I don't really have any thoughts about this. Her rib cage is wearing a cage. This is all very Beyonce.

However, she was backstage in a coat either before or after performing. You almost never see a person covering up at the Grammys. THAT, at least, is refreshing.
