I really like the design here -- the stars are SO striking. A lot of people went with darker leotard designs this year, in fact, which you'll see. I'm curious what the team finals will bring.
Simone Biles

The iridescence under the lights (and flashbulbs) is also so nice. She also looks genuinely thrilled here, after her beam. However...
Simone

... THIS happened. While warming up for floor, she hurt her calf, and had to leave and emerge again with it HEAVILY taped (despite her coach describing it as "a little"). They said that AT THE MOMENT there is no concern about her continuing to compete. But she did look rocky on the floor (despite winning it). Ugh. WHY. BUBBLE WRAP SIMONE BILES.
Suni Lee

How incredible is this photo?! Suni finished third as an individual, so she made the all-arounds, which is thrilling. Bubble wrap her too, please.
Jordan Chiles

Jordan made the floor apparatus final, but JUST missed the all-around, because the US can only send two. I guess she'd get to go if Simone decides she can't compete. But she did herself PROUD and put the team in a stellar position.
Jade Carey

Jade had a tough day -- she's the reigning gold medalist on the floor, but she missed some landings and fully fell on one, scoring just over a 10 (in the dreaded red zone). She said she wasn't feeling well, I think? Poor thing. She totally pushed through and delivered in the vault, though (she didn't do the other two).
Hezly Rivera

Extra love for the rookie of the group!
2. Italy, Angela Andreoli

Italy ALSO went with darker leotards. Nary a red, white, or green to be seen. I have not kept up with gymnastics, so I have no idea whether Italy finishing second in quallies is a surprise or not.
3. China, Ou Yushan
PARIS, FRANCE - JULY 28: Ou Yushan from Team China competes in the women's gymnastics at the Bercy Arena during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France on July 28, 2024. (Photo by Aytac Unal/Anadolu via Getty Images)
Italy was five and a half points behind the USA, and China was 0.2 points behind Italy. If that gives you any perspective on how well the US did. China's leotards are BEAUTIFUL. Much less goofy than the diving unis, which have CHINA scrawled on them in yellow.
4. Brazil, Rebecca Andrade

She always looks fantastic, but again, not typical Brazil colors. I love the royal blue (or is it purple?) in there. Excellent use of metallics so far, everyone, CARRY ON.

Can we give medals of courage to all these women? Also, this is Andrade's third Olympics, and despite the picture I chose, she's a vault specialist. She can't be THRILLED that Simone decided to come back?!?
5. Japan, Mana Okamura

This is SO neat.
Rina Kishi

Getty was really into doing artsy things with some of the photos -- we have a LOT of these mirror images.
6. Canada, Ellie Black

Canada went with very moody blue maple leaves. It's so great to see her back; she qualified for the all-around, and this is her FOURTH Olympics. She's 28. You love to see all the old ladies!!!! (I am of course not actually seriously calling them old.)
7. Great Britain, Georgia-Mae Fenton

That's a little art-deco, almost.

I love the flag stripe down the side of this, but am obsessed with the fact that her little sock seems to be coming off?!? Surely that was distracting. Unless it's designed to sit right there, but... can it be?
9. Netherlands, Tisha Volleman

I might have made the bottom of this blue, or orange. OR, carried one or both of those colors through. The Netherlands being orange is such a strong national color!
10. Australia, Ruby Pass

This is a really lovely one from the Aussies.
11. France, Melanie de Jesus dos Santos and Marine Boyer

This was a heartbreaker. France fell apart, finishing 11th and completely shut out of the all-around and event finals. Melanie over there moved to Houston to train with Biles's coaches, and basically said she feels like all of that was for NOTHING. She was so upset that she was fanning herself (the fan was the colors of Martinique, her mother's home country) while her teammates tried to comfort her. It was... a rough one for all of them.
12. Republic of Korea, Lee Dayeong

This has a very Winter Olympics feel. Not that they use leotards, but you feel me. It's not that far removed from a skating costume.

Time to shout out some of the athletes that didn't qualify! I hope I got all the different countries in here. This is giving Elsa from Frozen.

I might LOVE this? I'm not sure why the bottom is such a deeper red, but it's still so striking.

This is also neat. It's like a fire in her belly. Insert hacky Hungary/hungry joke here.

This is EXTRA and I mean that in a good way. The snake on her sleeve!! I wish I had more photos of it.

I wonder how long it takes to get all those little rhinestones placed.
Lena Bickel of Team Switzerland

The neckline on that seems quite interesting. It's almost like the leotard version of a high-necked blouse. I'm picturing a vision board with Carolina Herrera on it in her classic white shirt/black skirt.
Alexa Moreno of Team Mexico

The ruffle on her neck looks like someone repurposed a garter. I wonder if that's annoying, having so much STUFF right by your head?
Caitlin Rooskrantz of Team South Africa

She got hurt and left on crutches. Let's celebrate how high she flew. And in such a good leotard. Also, she's GORGEOUS, which I know is not important but also: What a face.
Team Germany: Sarah Voss, Helen Kevric, Pauline Schaefer-Betz

The Germans turned it OUT by demonstrating the many uses of leggings in formal competition, which I love to see.
Aleah Finnegan of Team Philippines

I THINK this was the photo the photog was really hoping to get when they played around with this technique.

There were a couple groups comprised of individuals who weren't there with a team, and several of them seemed to be having a GREAT time together. I like everything that's happening in this photo.
Georgia-Rose Brown of Team New Zealand

This is very simple, but effective. It's like an upside-down neck tiara. I'm sure that was the exact pitch.
Charlize Moerz of Team Austria

Pretty, but nothing too unusual, kinda like NZ's.
Lynnzee Brown of Team Haiti

I love it! We saw her in the earlier post with the boats at the Opening Ceremony, too. She's having a whole GFY DAY.

I love this. I also think it would look awesome if it had a matching sneaker. Not for competition obviously; just for life.
Sona Artamonova of Team Czechia

I know it was the concept, but I don't like how washed-out this looks.

THREE different colorways at once, and NONE of them colors I typically associate with Spain.
Kaylia Nemour of Algeria

Kaylia WON the uneven bars with a monster score of 15.600, which is almost a full .6 above second place. I'm going to go back and watch this! I hope she wins gold next week! Wow.
An Chang-ok of North Korea

This is the opposite of so many of the others: very bright, and kinda aimlessly so, but why NOT. Stand out!

For as much as the beam freaks me out, here's a tribute to what it takes to cling to the damn bar. Holy moly.
