There's something sort of funny about advertised as being from something called Euphoria while wearing such an INTENSE facial expression. I can't totally decide what I think of this as a cover. I think an "Art Issue" would be a great excuse to really experiment a bit more; her background is in modeling, and this feels kind of like Runway Face, or maybe a really intense Gap campaign.

And the subscriber cover, typically where a magazine will try something a bit more outlandish, is ALSO fairly simple. Hunter has a lot of presence, and does a LOT with fashion, even when it's wacky; this feels like a missed opportunity to use both those things.

This, however, is very evocative of a late night out and/or someone walking home from an LA house party. I keep thinking of when Cher Horowitz got mugged in the Valley and had to call Josh.

I wonder where this shoot was. Look at the old TV, and the funky bench. This has a David Lynch vibe, to me.

This, too, feels like a still from a movie, probably a gritty indie about road-tripping grifters.

This is really neat. There's something almost spectral about it -- like if we flipped the camera, we'd see nothing there, and she's a spirit who can see her own reflection. ... No, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

[Hunter Schafer Landed the Dec/Jan Harper's Bazaar CoverHarper's Bazaar positioned its December/January volume as the Art Issue, "not as a subject but as a lens through which to look at and understand both fashion and the world—because in life, everything can be art and anyone can be an artist, and if you keep your eyes peeled, there’s a masterpiece lurking behind every corner." Hunter Schafer is the actress/artist/model who stars in Euphoria and penned an episode in its second season, and she gives a reflective interview about her life and the journals she's kept for the better part of eight years now. It's moving when she talks about the way her life naturally divides itself into pieces; the childhood memories that many of us take for granted -- the ability to look back and see ourselves as ourselves in our past -- are more complicated for her: “One day,” she begins, “\[Zendaya\] was telling a story from her childhood, and then she said, ‘You never talk about your childhood.’ It’s a little bit sad but also true to say that I feel like the story of my life begins in my late teens, when I was finally living in the world the way I was supposed to. I don’t know if I’ve talked about this in the press before, but I think there’s a phenomenon among the trans and queer community, and it’s why we make great artists a lot of the time. When your exterior world and your body and your self are not in line with who you are, you turn inward. And my theory is that I built a really rich inner world until I started feeling like myself in my body. I’ve been trying to do the work of digging up stuff, but it’s going to take a while to excavate everything.” I need to check out Euphoria.
