Jennifer Hudson was one of the big winners at the 40th NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles last night. The singer and actress, whose mother, brother and nephew were killed four months ago, won three awards - picking up new artist, outstanding collaboration, and best album with her self-titled CD. The NAACP awards are presented annually by the oldest U.S. civil rights organisation, the American National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, and honour outstanding people of colour in film, television, music, and literature. Jamie Foxx beat R&B singer Chris Brown, who has not been seen since being arrested earlier this week, to win the trophy for outstanding male artist and Beyonce walked away with outstanding female artist of the year. In the film categories, 'The Secret Life of Bees,' in which Hudson stars, won best film of 2008 and 'Slumdog Millionaire' was named outstanding independent motion picture. Will Smith and Rosario Dawson were named outstanding actor and actress for 'Seven Pounds'.
