This photo appears to be Julie, age 18, leaving on the train to go to a town called Cleethorpes, where she performed in a cabaret (not to be confused with Cabaret). I hope she has this framed in her house. The romantic in me really loves People Waving From a Train As They Head Off For Life-Changing Adventures. (She'd already done performing by then, but her biggest career break was less than a year away.)

In 1954, she starred in The Boy Friend on the West End, which is what led to My Fair Lady. She is so delightful, as a presence, that I am wounded on her behalf by that shirt. And the shoes.

I bear Audrey no ill will -- she's great in it, even dubbed -- but damn, do I wish I could have seen the Julie Andrews "My Fair Lady."

This is a Cecil Beaton costume design from My Fair Lady. It sounds as though in her stage version, Ascot is monochromatic but for Eliza; the movie played it out differently. This is not the best photo of Julie, but it's a super photo of Hat.

This is Julie's wedding to Tony Walton, and the cut of her dress SO reminds me of some of Fraulein Maria's clothes. That bodice.

Ah, Camelot. Richard Burton looks kind of creepy and sweaty, and Julie looks regal and vaguely OVER IT but too polite to say so.

I wish this photo were my mood. I'd like to work toward this photo being my mood.

Why did we not treat Julie and Carol TV specials like the Olympics? We need one every four years. AT MINIMUM. Every two, if we treat them like winter and summer.

Mary Poppins is a movie that has not aged well for me, but it has nothing to do with Julie Andrews and a WHOLE LOT to do with Dick Van Dyke and the hideous second chunk of the film and also how mean Mary is. Anyway, she's gorgeous in it.

Her face is just incredible. She sincerely pulled off the Maria haircut with absolute aplomb.

GET IT, MARIA. GET IT GOOD.

This is one of those photos I wish I could put in a frame and then tell everyone it's my great aunt.

I know this is a real movie, but doesn't it just FEEL like a parody of a Hitchcock series? "If you loved Rear Window, get ready for TORN CURTAIN. And if you loved TORN CURTAIN, get ready for THE SLIT IN THE BLINDS. And if you loved that one, boy, you'll go mad for SHATTERED SUN ROOF."

Julie was ALSO in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and it will not surprise you that I saw this photo and thought, "I don't feel good about that shoe color."

This was from something called Star!, about the life of British performer Gertrude Lawrence. This feels like it MUST have influenced designers over the years, even subconsciously. It feels like a Giambattista Valli.

The Julie Andrews Hour TV show did NOT spare expense with costumes.

Well, it's a kicky helmet, but the concussions will be brutal.

Would it be weird to make a framed copy of this part of my annual Christmas decorations?

I just need to let Informative Caption discuss this: "Yesterday Julie And Her Film Producer Husband Blake Edwards Have Come To Hitchhurst Cottage To Search For Her Stepmother Wynne Wells. Mrs Wells Was Last Seen On Easter Monday - The Day She Left Her Home Where She Lived With Julie's Father Ted." That is DRAMATIC. I hope she was okay. Julie came dressed for a detective show, for sure.

I would never deny you MUPPETS. I decided Miss Piggy declined to be featured because Julie Andrews burns too brightly.

She was so sublime in Victor/Victoria.

I don't have a year for this, but I just really feel like she should have been a matriarch on a nighttime soap at some point.

I MEAN. She would have been sublime.

Julie, too, was a victim of 1980s fashion. It happened to us all.

The world, or at least the U.S., did at least get one "Together Again" show with these two. (It was indeed called that.) I assume they had a lengthy discussion about their hair color and whether they should complement one another.

This was her DBE investiture, with none other than Liz Taylor. I assume THEY had a long conversation about dyed-to-match shoes.

HI JULIE I LOVE YOU.

In case you're wondering if Julie can pull off a kicky suit, the answer is HELL YES.

For all your Von Trapp fan-fiction needs.
