First, as Informative Caption tells us, this was not just some rando theatre outing, and ergo the woman in the background here didn't just make some bizarro clothing choices. Ahem: "\[Kate\] attends the opening night of "42nd Street" at Theatre Royal...\[the event\] is a fundraising event for the East Anglia Children's Hospice (EACH) of which the Duchess of Cambridge is Patron."

I love this dress. I think the 50s Full Skirt look is one that suits her -- and it's SO NICE to see her in something different. I think I would have done black shoes and bag, just because the lighting at this event is such that it's hard to tell whether or not the bags exactly match or what. And even if they do, that might just be too matchy. (I don't believe we'll ever see Kate pairing, say, a turquoise shoe with this sort of thin, as much as that would be a delight.)
