(Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images) I'm totally on board with this. It's edgy and architectural while still being elegant, it's fit with absolute precision, and it's a great showcase for her haircut. This whole thing is so much better and more smoothly put-together than... [well, this, for one](../../golden-globes-fug-carpet-katy-perry-in-prada-01-2016). ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/BGUS_968165_015-1503895188.jpg) Inglewood, CA - Stars make their way to the The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards held at The Forum. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Katy opened the show by pretending she went to space, and then arriving through the roof in a spacesuit (approved in a pre-taped bit by Abby from *Broad City* and Kathryn Hahn, which... I love Kathryn Hahn, but was Ilana sick?). ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840022590-1503892212.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Katy Perry speaks onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images) Then she halfway got changed, in service of a Handmaid's Tale gag (they were pretending she'd been in space and was unplugged from the zeitgeist), which meant she delivered the rest of her monologue wearing a half-shed suit and a flesh-colored bodysuit. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839991060-1503892291.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Host Katy Perry speaks onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) The whole "babies are so hot right now" gag felt ten years stale. And it also meant we didn't get a good look at ANYTHING of this dress exept the slit. (Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images) This is GORGEOUS, though. I love it. I wish it hadn't been wasted on a mid-show costume change for like 30 seconds of screen time. ## in Halpern ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840004510-1503901250.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Katy Perry poses during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by John Shearer/Getty Images for MTV) This is either [the same one Marion Cotillard wore (which was Halpern](../../marion-cotillard-sticks-it-to-dior-05-2017)), or a cousin. BOLD, Katy. I loved what it represented when Marion wore it, and I think it's kinda wasted here, but I guess if she's second to market with it -- so to speak -- then it makes more sense? ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840017210-1503901267.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Katy Perry poses during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage) This did make me laugh: When they came back from commercial after the *Game of Thrones* finale (allegedly) ended, Katy was dressed as Daenarys. Complete with dragon. ## in Naeem Khan ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840026228-1503893754.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Katy Perry speaks onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) And then she closed the show with "Swish Swish," and decided to go SUPER LITERAL with a basketball theme. It says a lot about Dior's current direction that I looked at these costumes and thought, for a hot second, "IS THAT DIOR???" ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840016556-1503892109.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Katy Perry performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California.
