1992

This is an episode of a German talk show, and Diane was 16, looking for all the world like she is about to open her mouth and annihilate her opponent for a debate team victory. (The caption also ID'd her as "West German," which was a real throwback.)

1999

And this is an era in her career where she was "model Diane Kruger," without "actress." A tube top, a black skirt, and a shawl were a uniform of the time but it seems bananas by today's standards of a fashion event (this was the Fragrance Foundation awards).

2000

Here she's with Guillaume Canet, her husband at the time -- whom you might recognize as Marion Cotillard's current partner. (OMG I just remembered that whole wackadoo rumor that Marion's most recent child was secretly Brad Pitt's, conceived during... whatever that movie was they made together. Gossip is CRAZY.) Diane's outfit reminds me of a tablecloth set I got from my grandmother, which was essentially a thick cloth with a lace overlay to add interest but which never quite lay neatly.

2002

Guillaume looks like French Nick Jonas to me in this shot. Diane looks gorgeous and bored.

2002

She could bust that out now, and turn the scarf into a mask.

2002

That is... some denim. And I don't mean SOME DENIM in the way that Charlotte the Spider would mean it.

2003

We are seeing a touch of her more avant garde side coming out, methinks.

2004

She's giving me a Rebecca Romijn vibe here -- which is a totally uncontroversial statement given that they do kind of resemble each ither.

2004

I think this is Narciso Rodriguez? It is attached to her neckpiece by two very, very optimistic threads.

2004

This post is how I learned that Rose Byrne is also in Troy. Brad Pitt is looking at her as if he's just told her that he wants to make out with her immediately in a dark corner, and she's like HA HA GOOD SIR YOU JEST. Eric Bana just wants everyone to smile. Diane may be wishing they hadn't glued that last lace stripe right across her boobs.

2004

I don't judge a person for having extensions -- I'd totally have tried them, if I thought they would work with my hair -- but... this is a poorly hidden melange of real and fake hair, right?

2004

Drop waists REALLY were the thing around this time, I gather. Diane looks like she absolutely cannot breathe in this. David Benioff on the end there, who wrote Game of Thrones and is married to Amanda Peet, looks like he is trying to stay away from Eric Bana in case people notice he's copying his coif.

2004

SEAN BEAN! Your locks are so FLOWING. I do not remember this era of the Bean. Also, if the show Mr. Bean had actually been the shenanigans of Sean Bean, I might have been into it.

2004

"Finally," Diane thought to herself, "Orlando Bloom has shown up to SOMETHING." (She saved her best dress for the big Cannes debut and that was wise.)

2004

But this is tragic and bad, and looks like she made a confused attempt at layering.

2004

Dropped waists again! She and Rose were in Wicker Park together that same year, and this looks like they had a competition to hack apart four dresses and recombine them. I am honestly nt sure there is a winner.

2004

2004

For a second my brain processed that poster as being a movie ABOUT Nicolas Cage that was called NICOLAS CAGE: NATIONAL TREASURE. I guess he can use that for his autobiography.

2004

I wish I had a full view of this dress. But it looks pretty messy.

2004

This looks fully harnessed to her neck.

2005

She loves a neck piece. Good thing this has one, because the bodice is walking a precarious and pinchy line here.

2005

If those are billowy pants, then this feels a tad costumey for the premiere of The Aviator. If they aren't... well, it still feels like she threw it together from a theatre costume rack.

2005

Nobody show this jumble to Fraulein Maria, or else she'll have to completely rewrite the one about her favorite things.

2005 in Chloe

Oh, but that cape-coat, I will take.

2005

This has a very Damp Nymph Skips Tiredly Through The Forest; Really Just Wants Sweatpants and a Nap vibe.

2005

She looks terribly cool in this weird concotion.

2005

I am not convinced this isn't a jacket she's donned backwards.

2005

Why were so many people throwing leggings under dresses that did not need leggings -- or which would be better served by tights? Leggings are not pants and they really are not NECESSARY in formalwear, either.

2006

Very pretty, but I feel like she could get a mulligan on the makeup.

2006

Gorgeous.

2006

That has potential but doesn't land for me as well as the previous one.

2006

She seems to be holding that clutch with urgent purpose. We didn't have a shot of her without it there. REGRETS. Check your hems, kids.

2006

Funky.

2006

Those are micro-shorts.

2006

I love this. That casual gold t-shirt style dress is just great. I would wear it now and she could, too.

2006

This dress wigs me out because the design looks like they sewed it to her skin.

2007

Pick a sleeve and pick a hem, and yet... she looks great.

2007

Again with the needless leggings. Although one could argue that dress, which appears to have been made from old curtains, is also needless.

2007

That's a very elaborate chest tourniquet.

2007

And now we're into needless belts.

2007

So much of this is pretty, but would it have been BETTER if it were simply a strapless bodice? There is enough else going on with it.

2007 in Chanel

This makes it look like she MIGHT be wearing blue spangly underwear, and yet AGAIN, she looks great in it.

2007

Yeah, for a Cannes daytime photocall, that seems right.

2007 in Chanel

Well, I ASSUME this is Chanel, as Karl didn't leave her side. It admittedly doesn't look very Chanel to me. It's quite bombshell.

2007

So many sleeve/armholes! So stretchy! It's not t cute, but damn does it look comfortable, which is my only personal requirement at this point.

I LOVE that, and not just because of Pacey. It's just polo-perfect.

2007

Lovely.

2007

Ooh, but I keep wanting to reach out and yank that back to center.

2007

This color is amazing.

2008 in Chanel

I was not expecting those shoes. Or that navel.

2007

And I really was not expecting this chest-face, or the fact that her belt looks like her chest-face is smoking a cigar.

2008

Diane likes a version of a tux, and this was not a particularly successful one. It screams VEGAS NIGHTCLUB EMPLOYEE.

2009

So does this.

2009

But that is so pretty. It's just... gorgeous.

2009

That's also quite lovely. How did we miss this from Inglourious Basterds?!? What were we even DOING.

It's Diane Kruger's Birthday, So Here's Fugtrospective Part II: The Early Years
Because we love an old photo.
