I ASK YOU. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4458-1492020491.png) I literally cannot remember what Alison Wright's name is on this program -- Penelope?? -- because to me she will ALWAYS be Martha, thanks to her role on *The Americans*. And I love her, and I wish I were wearing this right now. FYI, nearly everyone in these three episodes is wearing a pillbox hat -- other than Bette Davis, and the wise and long-suffering Mamacita. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4457-1492020656.png) In which Martha experiments with florals and it doesn't go well. Binging these three episodes kind of brought home for me why I don't really ENJOY this show: It's so much just women struggling and failing to succeed, thanks to the inherent sexism of Hollywood and while TRUST ME I am well aware of these issues, consistently being reminded of them at the moment makes me feel v. downtrodden. I cannot help but think that it might have felt less traumatic if we had a women president at the moment -- politics aside, the scene in which Martha here is told by New Citizen Mamacita that eventually women are going to outnumber men and we're all gonna be super successful and be able to be the boss might have played with less poignancy had the presidential election turned out differently, and I'm sure this script was written with that in mind. It's interesting to think how current events, unpredictable at the time of writing, can effect the tone of various works of art. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4461-1492020811.png) It cracks me up that Joan's ensembles in this episode are vaguely Cruella de Vil. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4463-1492020537.png) What did I tell you about the pillbox hats? This is not a good look for you. You look like an expectant mother who has been forced to be someone's matron of honor. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4470-1492020718.png) I'm not gonna get into the whole other plotline about The Director Alfred Molina -- although he's very good in his part -- but FYI, Frank Sinatra was terrible to work with. One thing this show does do beautifully is embrace the bliss that comes from stomping purposefully down a hallway like a bad bitch in sunglasses. We had one of these when I was a kid and I preferred to talk on it because I felt it was the most dramatic option. (Leaving aside the fact that I was talking to, like, my grandma and my friend Cheri.) ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4487-1492020756.png) This is how I, too, make all my business calls in which I subtly wage psychological warfare to fix the Oscars. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4486-1492021023.png) The Hopper/Crawford plan to bring down Bette Davis, cost her the Oscar, and allow JOAN to accept the Best Actress Oscar despite not even being nominated was (a) INSANE, (b) ballsy, (c) extremely effective, and (d) did I mention just really insane? She's playing Geraldine Page, who lets Joan guilt-trip/steamroll her into agreeing to let Joan accept her Oscar on her behalf, if she wins, which I frankly thought was sort of ridic. I DID enjoy the machinations Joan went through to get TWO people to agree to let her accept the Oscar for her (she ended up accepting for Anne Bancroft). ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/04/IMG_4493-1492020886.png) Note: CZJ looks great here, and is very good in this part. Joan honestly is kind of unhinged. She showed up dressed as A SILVER OSCAR. LADY. TAKE A VACATION.
