## Virtue and Moir of Canada; Free Dance

I normally organize this post in the order that people finished, with the short program first but...come on. I AM BUT A HUMAN WOMAN. I was not going to make you wait for all the embracing!

And there was *so* much emotional embracing! And loving murmuring! And also crying! (From me, especially; I cried at this, I cried at the Shib Sibs. I cried at the other Canadians. I cried at a few of the ads. I was just an emotional disaster watching the ice dancing. I can't help it. IT'S SO FULL OF FEELINGS!)

Their's is just a great story; first, a gold medal, than a silver, then retirement, and then this triumphant return. It's THRILLING. (Do you think Meryl Davis called Charlie White to see if he wanted to get the gang back together?) It's also thrilling because everyone (read: all of the internet) is talking about whether or not they're banging, which is one of my own personal favorite subjects. My theory is: THEY SURE ARE NOW. (My actual real theory is that they definitely HAVE. If just to try it on for size.)

Oh, right, this skate. I love it. I think it's tremendous. During the team competition, on Twitter, I said that I thought it was the best free dance of the Olympics, and I stand by that; I know it came in second to the French, and the French routine is AMAZING, but this one fills me with a greater amount of delight, and the crowd goes totally berzerk for it. (I was actually a little worried it wasn't going to be enough after the French team skated so beautifully; I am REALLY glad it was.)

This was the costume Tessa wore for their free skate in the team competition, in case you're a completist. This also seems like the right moment to note that Tessa and Scott LOVE them some illusion netting for this number.

And voila, her new ensemble for the short dance for the individual competition; I think I like the one she wore for the team competition better? She still looks saucy. They're great. YAY THEM.

## Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France: Short Dance

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 18 Feb 2018

To the French! Poor Gabriella. The green part of her costume that goes around her neck came unsnapped when their dance began and she had to skate the entire thing just hoping the rest of it held up (which it did, mostly because there were also straps around her back and shoulders). This costume is lovely, but it's obviously EVIL and she must have been STRESSSSSSSSED OUT. (In the presser after the event, she said it was her worst nightmare.) As you might imagine, their skate was a little...frazzled. The whole thing was so distracting that I didn't even notice that his shirt is almost totally sheer until I watched the replay.

## Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France: Free Dance Dance

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 20 Feb 2018

Their free skate is EXTREMELY good and you know they have to be thinking that if her dress had held up, they might have won the gold medal. I am sure they were both terribly disappointed, and also had to know coming into this Olympics they might not be able to beat Tessa and Scott. But they're super young -- 22 AND 23 -- and have YEARS ahead of them to dominate this sport. In terms of costumes: Hers is elegant but I kept worrying that the bum was going to ride up, for some reason? I might have just been on WARDROBE ALERT for her. He showed a LOT of chest, like he was playing some very sexy sculpter in an independent film from the 90s.

## Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, Free Dance

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 20 Feb 2018

I am SO PROUD of these two! When we covered Nationals, [I noted that I was worried this routine was too "languid,](https://www.gofugyourself.com/photos/us-figure-skating-national-championships/us-championships-figure-skating-san-jose-usa-07-jan-2018-3?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)" but they absolutely fixed that at some point between then and now. They NAILED this. (And, without anything insane happening, I think the bronze was the best they could have hoped for; I hope they're happy with it!) GOOD JOB YOU TWO!

This was a good routine, and what you cannot tell from this pic is that the side cut-out in her dress is VERY aggressive. It's backless, and almost sideless.

This photo makes his skating look more effortful than it actually was, but he *did* trip, which is a nightmare for them -- I wonder if they'd skated clean, if they might have beaten the Shibs. As it was, they were clearly distraught. When they hugged at the end, I read her lips and she said, "Fuck! I'm sorry. Are you okay?" Which makes me wonder if she somehow tripped him? Regardless, it seemed like a moment you'd just play that over and over again in your head, for the rest of your life.

## Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev, Olympic Athletes of Russia: Short Dance

I feel like the Russians REALLY love fringe, up to and including her earrings. I am...unmoved by them.

Also, I do not get this routine. She's blind at the beginning, then she gets her sight back, then HE'S blind at the end? WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU GUYS? Do you need to have your well water tested? Call an optometrist or something!

## Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy: Short Dance

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 18 Feb 2018

And I found this all a little underwhelming, but they skated right after Virtue and Moir in the short program, and that's brutal. (I also think the music for this skate feels kind of...amorphous?) Everyone must have wanted to stab themselves in the face when the news broke that V&M were coming out of retirement, right?

Their free dance is lovely, I think, and this particular lift is WILD. They skate to the soundtrack of *Life Is Beautiful*, which I have never seen, but it seems to be well translated to the ice from what I understand. These costumes fall right into the category of Stuff We Could Basically Wear Outside Right Now.

## Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Canada: Short Dance

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 18 Feb 2018

FYI, the required dance for the Short Dance was "Latin rhythm," aka "Cha Cha, Rhumba, Samba, Mambo, Meringue, Salsa, and/or Bachata." This looks a little...Bollywood to me? But okay!

Figure Skating - PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Gangneung, Korea - 20 Feb 2018

And their free skate is SO great; from what I understand, they first skated this number six years ago and decided to bring it back as a last hurrah? (As ever, I know many of you will know more about this than I do and I WELCOME your wisdom in the comments.) Regardless: It is TREMENDOUS. Apparently, it made Tanith cry, and it also made ME cry.

I did not see this skate, but if you took off the skates, this could be a candid shot from the Vanity Fair Oscars party. That is a compliment.

This is a new costume, and it is RAD. Madison looks like a superhero. I also want to note that this is the first time I ever noticed how expressive Evan's face is. Is he ALWAYS like this and I just....never looked at his face before? Or did he really turn it up for the Olympics? However...

OH MAN. This was A HEARTBREAKER. They were skating SO well -- this free dance is gorgeous, and I say that as a person who thinks "Imagine," to which they skated, is a bit played out -- and they just mutually tripped over each other's feet. It was just random and absolutely the most horrific possible time for this to happen. (Although -- did she also uncharacteristically trip and fall in the warm up for an earlier skate? Or did I dream that?) I feel TERRIBLE for them. They still finished in the top ten, but they were seventh going into the free skate and you know they thought they might be able to get in there. Ugh. The agony of defeat.

## Alexandra Nazarova and Maxim Nikitin of Ukraine: Short Dance

As usual, I'm mostly covering only the top teams here, but I HAD to share what's happening on her leg here as a coda, because it's just entertaining and whimsical. So many of you tweeted us to note that she looked like she was being attacked by a vine. Another common sentiment from Fug Nation: "I think the theme was FRINGE." It is, indeed, a delight. Never change, ice dancing.
