Madonna

There is something so wholesome about Madonna in flowered pants skipping around with a tambourine.

Freddie Mercury

Queen's set is widely considered one of the best rock performances of all time. Bohemian Rhapsody invented that Freddie had just told the band he had HIV/AIDS, and that's why it was so great, but that didn't happen until 1987 and 1989, respectively. Anyway: What a loss.

George Michael

Speaking of losses! I had shots of him on-stage but you couldn't see his face as clearly as this lovely one of him watching other people.

Alison Moyet

Yay, Alison! "Only You" is one of my favorite '80s tunes -- it ALWAYS works on me in film and TV -- but she didn't sing that; she came out and duetted with Paul Young.

And HELLO MULLET. He sang "Every Time You Go Away" but NOT "Wherever I Lay My Hat, That's My Home." Because with those spikes, NO ONE believes he wears hats.

Martin Kemp

You'd better believe Spandau Ballet sang "True." Also, HELLO MULLET #2.

Bono

HELLO, MULLET #3. This is, truly, the most resplendent one of all.

Ric Ocasek

The Cars did, among other things, "Just What I Needed" and "Drive." I have been staring at this and cannot totally make out his head suit, but I feel relatively confident saying HELLO MULLET #4.

Duran Duran

I see you up there, John Taylor I Think, wearing MULLET #5. I'm just disappointed Simon had clipped his by now.

Mark Knopfler

UNITED KINGDOM - JULY 13: WEMBLEY STADIUM Photo of Mark KNOPFLER and LIVE AID and DIRE STRAITS, Mark Knopfler performing live onstage at Live Aid, playing Fender Stratocaster guitar, wearing headband (Photo by Pete Still/Redferns)

MULLET #6 is giving strong John McEnroe vibes. Dire Straits did "Money for Nothing" and "Sultans of Swing," and sadly NOT the theme to The Princess Bride because it did not exist yet.

Pete Townshend and Bob Geldof

UNITED KINGDOM - JULY 13: WEMBLEY STADIUM Photo of Pete TOWNSHEND and Bob GELDOF and LIVE AID, Pete Townshend and Bob Geldof, performing live onstage during Live Aid finale (Photo by Pete Still/Redferns)

Geldof up there, in MULLET #7, looks weirdly like Jerry Seinfeld.

Live Aid

Look how young Sting looks. And look how MULLET #8 Phil Collins looks.

Hall & Oates

I am giving this MULLET #9 status because I THINK the back is long enough and front short enough for it to have the right vibes. But this photo in general looks like two dudes who put on wigs and were like, "Um, yes, we are Hall & Oates. First names... Mr."

Howard Jones

Hair-wise, MULLET #10, let me quote you back at you: Things can only get better.

Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey

MULLET #11 is ROBUST.

Rick Springfield

MULLET #12 is looking pretty stringy in the back. Jesse's girl was never going to go fo that.

Chrissie Hynde

Does Chrissie's count? I'm not sure it does. Her eye outfit is hilarious. And I think she and Carrie Fisher were swapping hair notes at this point.

Neil Young

Neil Young has always had an intense hair situation.

Joan Baez

She did "Amazing Grace," which was probably beautiful.

Patti Labelle

Patti looks like she's wearing a hat, but I believe it's hair. IT'S A BEJEWELED HAIR HAT.

Sade

Dear lord, she is gorgeous.

Kenny Loggins

I am not sure if this is long enough in the back to be a mullet; I did a little extra research and the jury is still out. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. In other words, he's all right.

Billy Ocean

If you are SURE you can hear him singing "Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car," you are SADLY WRONG. He sang "Loverboy" and "Caribbean Queen."

Lionel Richie

He only came out to do the group performance of "We Are The World." Yes, it does seem wrong that he didn't do "Dancing On The Ceiling," but it ALSO didn't exist yet.

Cher

She also did "We Are The World" and otherwise just attended. She looks so CHILL.

Melissa Manchester

This whole thing screams 1985 so specifically, from the tips of her hair to the toes of her mismatched boots.

Bob Dylan

Bob looks very cheery.

Bette Midler

I believe Bette just emceed, which seems like a waste, but what do I know!

Tina Turner, Mick Jagger

I love this photo so much.

Black Sabbath

Ozzy Osbourne looks kind of like he woke up ten minutes ago and was like, "Yup, good enough!" That is right on brand, in fact.

Ashford & Simpson

Matching dots AND sparkles? SOLD.

Paul McCartney And David Bowie

Bowie did a set of his own, and then came out for "Let It Be" with McCartney. I THINK some of that was because Paul's mic broke and so people came out and chimed in to make it loud for the Wembley audience.

Live Aid Happened 41 Years Ago Today
On July 13, 1985, nearly 40 percent of the world's population watched some of Live Aid, a pair of concerts in London and Philadelphia that raised millions for famine relief, most specifically in Ethiopia. At the time it was reported to be 40-50 million pounds but Wikipedia says they now link it to 150 million in donations. There has been a lot of subsequent controversy about whether the funds were misappropriated by the Ethiopian government, and whether Bob Geldof or Live Aid itself did enough to understand how to get the money where they intended for it to go. People have reported on certain misuses of money and then apologized and walked it back... there has been a lot going on here, per Wikipedia. As a kid, all I knew is that every band I cared about was doing stuff on-stage ONE AFTER THE OTHER. And now I look back, and... friends, get ready for the mullets.
