TIFF, September 2011 (in Tom Ford)

This is just...really good. Simple, classic, timeless. I will say that I think one of the reasons this press tour was so successful is because Madge was definitely in British Lady of the Manor phase, and leaning hard into the 30s/40s vibe of the film, and both of those vibes generally translate into pretty classic lines. I also have to note that I know the kids love a middle part at the moment, but this deep side part is so gorgeous on her. (Also, look at all those cameras! This was before we had iPhones.)

I wish I had the rest of this look, but the diamond themed necklace is a nice touch.

This feels both very PROFESSIONAL -- as she is the writer/director -- but also Madonna-y, thanks to the crucifix jewelry. The dress is L'Wren Scott, and the more I run into her works in the archives lately, the more we feel that loss; she was such a great designer and I can only imagine what else we might have seen from her.

This is Vionnet (the sunglasses are Miu Miu) and it's delightful; it's SO good on her.

Given that this is a Gucci party, I assume this is Gucci and there are a lot of accessories happening here but the ones I want to steal the most are those glasses.

Another L'Wren Scott, and it's fabulous on her.

This is reasonable. That jacket is fun.

Golden Globe Awards, January 2012

Sure, the movie was panned. But who won Best Original Song in a Motion Picture for the song "Masterpiece"? YOU'RE LOOKING AT HER. That song could burn down my house and I couldn't identify it. (The song was ineligible for the Oscar because the rules for that award are ever-changing and wild. Madonna's NEVER been nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar and I didn't know that until now but I'm mad about it!) This makes up for the fact that "Who's That Girl" -- A BANGER -- lost the same Globes category in 1987 to...okay, fine. It lost to "I've Had the Time of My Life." That is fair. I can't get mad about that. Anyway, I like this dress even though the skirt kind has a Post-Its vibe.

This feels a bit more like a true blend of Writer/Director Madonna and...you know. Madonna/Madonna Madonna. Here, the dress is Jean Paul Gaultier (I wondered when her old friend would make an appearance), but the cape is D&G. (A BIG thanks to Red Carpet Fashion Awards, which was a huge help to me in tracking down some of these old credits, too.) Remember when Madonna wore these gloves all the time, presumably because she dislikes her aging hands? I get it.

This is the dress that sent me down this wormhole because I think it's the worst of the bunch. It's Marchesa and "W.E" was a Weinstein film. I don't think Harvey strong-armed Madonna into wearing Marchesa, which he had certainly done to other women, but I do think it was probably considered good form for her to do it, and Andrea Riseborough wore the line too. At the time I shrieked that Marchesa must be stopped and while I do get what they were going for here, I think it landed in Edwardian. WRONG EDWARD, Y'ALL!
