# Manfred Thierry Mugler Has Died

The hits keep coming: Fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, who'd taken to using his first name in 2010 because he felt "Thierry Mugler" itself was inexorably tied to the brand he'd left, [died yesterday at age 73](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/23/style/thierry-mugler-dead.html?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io). Mugler was known for his wild artistry on the couture runways, and the occasional foray into costuming, notably Demi Moore's dress for *Indecent Proposal*. He retired from his brand in 2002, so most of what we see as Mugler these days wouldn't be a commemoration of the man himself because it was the work of his successors -- with the exception of Kim Kardashian's 2019 Met Gala dress, which he came out of retirement to produce. So, to honor his life and work another way, we pulled a couple of the noteworthy archival pieces that have shown up recently, plus shots from his famous runway shows -- a slideshow that's full of supermodels and glitter and sculpture and wackiness, and maybe Niki Taylor dressed as a motorcycle? It's positively dripping in excess. His memory will live as large as his imagination did.
