Queen Maxima and Prince Charles
State Visit of the King and Queen of the Netherlands, London, UK - 23 Oct 2018
This is a very pretty non-color on Maxima -- it's pinkish but muted -- and it does at least have a couple twists to it. The material is tweedy on the top and bottom, but more of a satin in the middle, demarcated by all the weird fraying. Maybe this IS secretly crazy. Also, yes, that is a headband. I wonder if she studied pictures of Kate recently and then shrugged, "Okay, I guess that's the thing in Britain right now."

State Visit of the King and Queen of the Netherlands, London, UK - 23 Oct 2018
Backing up: There was a Guard of Honor over at Horse Guards, before the procession down the Mall to Buckingham Palace. I assume Charles here is telling Wax all about how it feels to wear one of those hats, and how the ladies really are quite fond of them.

This poor man had to calm his horse and then eventually dismount. What a nightmare that must be. You can plan all you like, but if a horse gets spooked, it gets spooked.

Here's a better view of Max's headband. I also have to give her full credit for handling the squat-and-smooch with especial grace: She's 5'10", and the Queen is listed at 5'4" -- "listed," like she's an athlete or something -- but might well be more petite than that by now. It's a lot of distance to cover without throwing out one's knees or falling in heels.

The Queen looks resplendent. I LOVE this color on her, and the hat, and the beaming smile. I think she is quite proud of the pageantry, and how London can turn on the traditions.

This is a very nice photo of the four of them. Charles looks so... cheery and grandfatherly. It makes me want to hug him, kind of. For some reason the beans got really into Prince Charles before we went to England -- real talk: I think it's because my mom found some random wind-up toys of him and the Queen, so they just knew who he was -- and they were basically SHOCKED that he didn't see them outside the Palace and pop down to kick a football with them. NEXT TIME.

Apparently, they arranged a viewing of Dutch items from the Royal Collection for Max and Wax, which is neat. I don't know specifically what any of them were, sadly. I want to get this post up, and expediency is sometimes the enemy of information.

They also spent some time at Westminster Abbey, as one would, because it's glorious. A new area to tour opened up there RIGHT after Jessica and I left post-wedding, and we were so sad to have missed it. SOMEDAY.
