This is so cool! Let's turn to Informative Caption: "'Layers of the Games' shows, through the combination of multiple images from a fixed camera, the quickfire drama that unfolds in a game or a day of competition during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics Games." This is the men's long program, and as you can tell...a lot of people ended up laying down.

## Ilia Malinin of the United States, Short Program

People in the chat widely hated this but I thought it was sort of fun. I hate it when the men are dressed like they got whatever at Banana Republic. At least this is DOING SOMETHING.

## Ilia Malinin of the United States, Long Program

Someone in the chat called this Sparkly Vecna and it's all I can see now. I'm sure he DID feel like he was being tortured in the Upside Down during this meltdown. Poor Ilia, I really feel for him. (And apparently, the degenerate gamblers of the world who bet on him to win were highly abusive to him on social media. Get off your phones and get a real hobby, bros.)

## Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan, Short Program

Yes, this is LITERALLY a Dune costume -- down to the Chalamet hair. I'm not mad about this!

This is more Standard Male Figure Skating Costume but I do think the gloves are fun. He skated VERY well, it's thrilling that he managed this win. (He did get the silver at Worlds last year, so it's not totally insane. Just mostly insane.)

## Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, Short Program

This program is a JAZZY DELIGHT and this man is a treat of a person. It's perfect that his shirt almost appears to have musical notes on it.

This is very pretty; he and Mikhail Shaidorov could have a Who Wore It Best. (And he's got to be devastated that he ALSO had a bad Free Skate, because he easily could have won here.)

## Shun Sato of Japan, Short Program

Lots of Dark Pants, Sparkly Tops on the dudes this year.

This is VERY low key, just one tiny step up from I Got This At Banana Republic.

## Andrew Torgashev of USA, Short Program

"I'm ALSO One Sparkly Step Up From Banana Republic." (The two non-Ilia American guys did very well, all things considered.)

"And I'm ALSO Fancy Vecna, Just Slightly Less So!"

## Maxim Naumov of the United States, Short Program

This sweet man lost both of his parents in that terrible plane crash that killed so many people in the figure skating community and it's wonderful that he skated so well this past week. This is a perfectly reasonable costume and he facially looks a little bit like Tom Schwartz from Vanderpump Rules, a person who definitely could not do this.

Basically just a color change on the shirt here. But bravo for him, I know his parents would have been incredibly proud and I hope he has a lot of loving supportive family and friends to hug him.

## Emily Chan and Spencer Howe of the United States, Short Program

They did, overall, better than expected! (USA pairs is not our strong suit.) This was a Mission Impossible skate and I feel like they could have been MORE spy-y.

This is where I tell you that TWO skaters used music from *Ghost: The Musical* this season. Needs more clay!

## Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea of the United States, short program

They NAILED this program; he seems like such a nice person. A nice person who is not breaking Figure Skating Costume Boundaries, and that's okay!

## Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea of the United States, long program

This is also very non-groundbreaking but it also doesn't make me mad or offend anyone on a cultural level and sometimes that is enough. (Also: Hooray for them for getting a gold medal in the team competition, where they NAILED it.)

## Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany, short program

He is, like many skaters, Secretly Technically Really Russian. (He's also handsome.) These are perfectly cromulent looks; she looks extremely pretty in red.

And these are lovely, although if I recall correctly, the bottom of her leotard rode up a bit more than one might like; am I crazy or are ladies' figure skating costumes a bit cheekier than they used to be.

## Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava of Georgia, short program

Speaking of people who are actually Russian! I love how many women are wearing pants, generally -- maybe five, over the two days of pairs competition -- but I dislike this costume on her and don't really understand it. (When they skated out, I was VERY worried it was going to be Culturally Problematic but I think it's just plain old bad because this is just to boring old Bolero. Yes, she spray paints her hair brown because she feels like Bolero requires brown hair.)

This spin positioning is awful; Dick Button would have hated it. Folks in the chat thought these costumes were dated and I tend to agree. I also learned that they skated as juniors WAY longer than most people do, thanks to a weird technicality. I'm glad they didn't win the gold!

## Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan, short program

Here are your gold medalists! They seem LOVELY; they had a tough short program and he cried, then they came back and won and he cried again. It was very touching! This is a sort of creepy "Paint It Black" skate and I think their costumes work for that.

These are just classically pretty and this was an AMAZING performance -- as I mentioned in the previous slide, he SOBBED at the end, when they won. It was just wonderful for them -- and set a world and Olympic record with their score. Congrats!!!
