The pink top was apparently part of the outfit, which is fitting because it was also one of Elsa Shiapiarelli's signature colors (she and Miuccia Prada are the subject of this year's exhibit), which also explains the decision to match her hair. The top itself is lovely, and you have to admit, she was the first out on the carpet and still one of the most memorably be the time the whole thing ended two hours later. That's saying something.

And this outfit works because of its context. On its own, without the backstory, yeah, it could seem nutso. But it fits with the theme, it works for an event that's basically about the history of fashion, and it was ELIZABETH f'ing TAYLOR's. You can't divorce it from that fact. It's just a cool (and savvy) idea. So yeah, the hem of the pants isn't quite right -- but it's not like she's going to let anyone monkey with Elizabeth F'ing Taylor's outfit. It even has a vintage wine stain on it, which Coco left, which I think is the absolute right decision -- because again, you don't take Elizabeth F'ing Taylor's pantsuit to the dry cleaner if you can avoid it. I mean, if Jon Hamm tripped and fell into your sleeve one night, would you clean that thing again? No.

If she wants to drop off that ring with me, though, I'd be happy to clean it. And return it. Eventually. Also, that pattern is so tastily retro. Like little single-celled organisms of glam.

My only beef is the shoes. I'm not entirely sure WHAT shoes you wear with this, and I like that she tried to tie them in with the other pink accents, but in photos the hues didn't seem to play off each other as well as I'd like. But again... I don't have any better suggestions. All I know is, I'd rather see something creatively vintage like this than YET ANOTHER "It's short! But it's long!" gown in which Heidi Klum strives to reminds us she has legs, as if it had slipped our minds.
