Beyonce in Armani

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608y) Singer Beyonce Knowles attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Knowles wears Armani Prive. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Can you imagine Beyonce wearing this now? This is so dressed-down for Present Bey. She barely even accessorized, and you can't see ANY of her thighs, which never happens anymore. This is practically a relic.

Gisele in Versace

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607al) Model Gisele Bundchen attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Bundchen wears Versace. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

This is both an argument in favor of why people called Gisele "The Body" for a while, and an argument against wearing slinky satin EVER. No matter what The Body does with this, it looks sad, because it died in the limo ride.

Christina Ricci in Givenchy

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607g) Actress Christina Ricci attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Ricci wears Givenchy and Bulgari jewelry. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

I look at this now, and think, "Someone should have grabbed a megaphone and screamed EVERYONE STEP AWAY FROM RICCARDO TISCI RIGHT NOW AND FOREVERMORE." Instead, we got ten more years of INSANE THINGS. This is like a deranged valentine to Wonder Woman, and it's neither fashion NOR good fantasy.

Katie Holmes in Armani

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6059238c) Actress Katie Holmes attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Holmes wears vintage Giorgio Armani. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Look how BRONZED she is. She was married to Tom Cruise at this point, still, and the styling here just seems too inept to be real. The necklaces don't work. She should've gone with a Wonder Woman choker or something.

Chanel Iman

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608ch) Model Chanel Iman attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

That belt is at least on the theme. She looks quite good.

Kate Bosworth in Chanel

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6059238d) Actress Kate Bosworth attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Bosworth wears vintage Chanel Haute Couture. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Okay, but THAT is SPECTACULAR. Oh, Karl, I miss when you did things like this.

Zac Posen and Kate Mar

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608cg) Fashion designer Zac Posen (L) and actress Kate Mara attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Mara wears Zac Posen. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

I am not sure if I realized Kate Mara was a THING in 2008. Zac looks totally wacky. Kate's dress, as is par for the Posen course, has some nice bits and then some where things get out of control.

Liv Tyler, Francisco Costa, and Eva Mendes

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608ba) Actress Liv Tyler, fashion designer Francisco Costa and actress Eva Mendes attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Tyler and Mendes wear Calvin Klein Collection. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

This was back when Calvin Klein was under better management.

Jennifer Lopez in Alberta Ferretti and Mark Anthony

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608aq) Singers Jennifer Lopez (L) and Mark Anthony attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Lopez wears Alberta Ferretti. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

She was about three months post-partum here, and I feel like the dress reflects that mental state: hanging on, but unable to finish a thought.

Emily Mortimer

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608cj) Actress Emily Mortimer attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Okay, but a belt ALONE cannot do the job with the theme, y'all. This seems way too casual.

Kate Moss and Stella McCartney

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Matt Baron/BEI/REX/Shutterstock (5125928bg) Kate Moss and Stella McCartney 2008 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Gala

If you're wondering, no, Stella has NEVER been very good at her job.

Joy Bryant in Pucci

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bo) Model Joy Bryant attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Bryant wears Pucci. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

At least she WENT FOR IT. The "it" being... something. <--- CONGRATULATIONS TO ME, because this wins Most Useless Comment of the Day.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Peter Som

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607ab) Fashion designer Peter Som (L) and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Gyllenhaal wears Peter Som. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Her necklace is hiding UNDER her bodice. Rookie mistake from a veteran. That dress is stumpifying on her, and might have been fine at a different party, but... it's just weirdly twee. It seems more Kirsten Dunst than Maggie G.

Eva Longoria in Marchesa

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bk) Actress Eva Longoria attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Longoria wears Marchesa with Verdura jewels. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

I wish her lipstick had been deeper, but this is one of Georgina's better works, for sure. I hope all these craftspeople got good jobs somewhere else.

Jack White and Karen Elson

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608aw) Musician Jack White (L) and model Karen Elson attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. White and Elson wear Marc Jacobs. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Why does Karen Elson look like Catherine O'Hara, sort of, and why is that dress happening to her? And why can't Hollywood just give all Johnny Depp's roles to Jack White and be free of the Depp ick factor?

Lake Bell

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bu) Actress Lake Bell attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Bell wears Balmain. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Okay, lightning bolts. That feels superheroic. Thank you, Lake Bell

Thandie Newton

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607m) Actress Thandie Newton attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Newton wears Chanel. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Wow. This was ten years before Westworld, and feels like something she might wear ON Westworld (says someone who made it through two episodes of Westworld and immediately checked out).

Eva Amurri

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607s) Actress Eva Amurri attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

It doesn't REALLY matter if it's a good-looking dress, because it's juicing her poor chest.

Mary J. Blige

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607o) Singer Mary J. Blige attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Blige wears Michael Kors and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Weirdly drab for MJB.

Rachel Bilson

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608ae) Actress Rachel Bilson attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Bilson wears Calvin Klein Collection. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Both her bangs AND her dress are dragging on her.

Emmy Rossum in Phi

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bs) Actress Emmy Rossum attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Rossum wears Phi. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Not loving the bodice, Emmy.

Jennifer Connelly in Balenciaga

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607t) Actress Jennifer Connelly attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Connelly wears Balenciaga. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

So much more elegant than her Vuitton costumes.

Piper Perabo

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bz) Actress Piper Perabo attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

It's like she cross-pollinated herself with Bjork.

Audrey Tautou

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608h) Actress Audrey Tatu attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

People have been incorrectly leaning on beige shoes SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME (read: a decade ago at least).

The Beckhams

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608bx) David Beckham (L) and Victoria Beckham attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. David Beckham wears Giorgio Armani Made-To-Order and Victoria Beckham wears vintage Giorgio Armani. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

I paused on BOTH these faces before I realized who it was.

Naomi Watts

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607v) Actress Naomi Watts attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Watts wears Thierry Mugler. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

This is totally fun. Trust Naomi Watts to save the day.

SWINTON

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607c) Actress Tilda Swinton (L) and performer Justin Bond attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Swinton wears Prada and Fred Leighton jewels. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

SWINTON is working full Bowie makeup here.

Taylor Swift in Badgley Mischka

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608ct) Musician Taylor Swift attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala themed 'Superheroes: Fashion & Fantasy' in New York City. Swift wears Badgley Mischka Couture. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

That's pretty, although the ombre is hitting her in weird places.

The Olsen Twins in DVF

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607e) Actress Mary-Kate Olsen and actress Ashley Olsen attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. The Olsen's wear Diane von Furstenberg. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

I don't think we've ever seen this much of their flesh since. (I believe that's Ashley in the black.)

Amber Valletta in Versace

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608as) Model and actress Amber Valletta attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Valletta wears Atelier Versace and David Yurman jewels. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

SHINY!

ScarJo in D&G

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608ce) Actress Scarlett Johansson attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Johansson wears Dolce & Gabbana and Fred Leighton jewelry. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Ugh. DISHWATER.

Mischa Barton in Missoni

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607x) Actress Misha Barton attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Barton wears Missoni. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Oh girl, I remember this. It's so crazy and so shapeless. And she looks so happy. Sniffle.

Michelle Monaghan in J. Mendel

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607w) Actress Michelle Monaghan attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Monaghan wears J. Mendel. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

That is a great fabric, oddly cut for her body, and I also totally thought it was Anne Hathaway for a long time.

Diane Kruger in Alberta Ferretti

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608cm) Actress Diane Kruger attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Kruger wears Alberta Ferretti. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

That is a lot of... puckering.

Kristen Davis in Michael Kors

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607ad) Actress Kristen Davis (L) and fashion designer Michael Kors attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Davis wears Michael Kors and Fred Leighton jewels. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

That's... fine. It's a dress. It's on her body. That's about as far into the theme as they got together.

Intern George, Julia Roberts, and Armani

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607f) (L-R) Actor George Clooney, actress Julia Roberts and fashion designer Giorgio Armani attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Clooney wears Giorgio Armani and Roberts wears Giorgio Armani Prive. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

She looks lovely, Armani looks overcooked, and Intern George looks like he's trying to drag Julia away into a corner so they can squawk about Giorgio's skin regimen

Anna Wintour in Chanel

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Kristen Somody Whalen/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056607r) Vogue's Anna Wintour attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Wintour wears Chanel Haute Couture. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

Real talk: Like it or not, this is totally the most interesting thing she's ever worn, right?

Bee Shaffer in Nina Ricci

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Eichner/Penske Media/REX/Shutterstock (6056608by) Bee Shaffer attends the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala in New York City. Shaffer wears Nina Ricci and Fred Leighton jewelry. Met 2008 Costume Institute Gala, New York

But as usual, Bee gets one of the best dresses of the lot.
