It's bittersweet to see a Marchesa that I loved this much, but... it's really spectacular, and it holds up.

This is one of my favorite Giant Skirt Logistics photos.

Liu Wen in Zac Posen

This theme really plays to Zac's structural strengths.

The dress is not great from the front, but the HAIR looks like amateur mouse ears.

It's got potential from the back. At the time I thought his signature was sort of cheesy, but Oscar died in October of this year, and I think they knew it was coming -- I remember whispers around Fashion Week -- and so I think they put his signature there as a tribute to what they knew would be his final Met Gala. So it makes me very misty.

Janelle Monae in Tadashi Shoji

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Janelle Monae attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

This was one of the first times she hit us with color, and it's AMAZING.

So stunning that I'm making you look twice.

Like I said: This theme is in Zac's sweet spot. He can do skirts so incredibly.

Arizona Muse in Ralph & Russo

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Model Arizona Muse attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

This is achingly perfect in its simplicity. It almost feels Oscar-y.

Katie Holmes in Marchesa

Poor Belle spilled the SHIT out of her espresso.

Maggie Q in Zac Posen

I love skirts like this that look as though wine sleeves have been built right in, and she could just pull a bottle out and open it with her teeth right now.

Kate Upton in D&G

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Model Kate Upton attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

She looks like a young drunken Italian maiden in mourning.

Karlie Kloss in Oscar de la Renta

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Model Karlie Kloss attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

Oscar certainly pulled out the most GLORIOUS of gowns for his swan song. I love this so much.

Kate Mar in Valentino

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actress Kate Mara attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

This idea was going around, apparently.

Ivanka Trump in Oscar de la Renta

This is also one of my all-time favorites, and in such an unusual color.

Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actress Emmy Rossum attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

Now THIS is a good year to deploy Herrera. I adore this.

Hayden Panettiere in Dennis Basso

This dress had just been worn by Myleene Klass in black and white, and it's so much more stunning in that starker relief than in baby blue and pink.

Suki Waterhouse in Burberry

I enjoy all of this except the bodice, which is failing her considerably.

This would be QUITE a ballet.

Karen Elson in Zac Posen

This feels like Zac was worried he'd done too many strapless dresses and slapped some sleeves and a cowl on it the night before.

Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Musician Taylor Swift attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

This left me cold at the time. It's fine? I think it suffered from there being so many other splashier gowns -- including Karlie's; they got ready together and arrived together and Karlie totally stole that thunder -- and also...

... because it SHOULD have been a bigger and better stair momnt, and wasn't.

Claire Danes in Oscar de la Renta

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Claire Danes attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

It's moving to see how many people Oscar dressed. This is totally banal though.

It's BETTER from the other side? At least there's some interest.

Idina Menzel in Donna Karan

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Idina Menzel attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

She went full Elsa. Well, actually... it might only be partial Elsa. FULL Elsa might have been more fun.

Sandra Lee

But FULL DISNEY CRACKPOT was already taken.

Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta

Pretty. Might have needed... rubies, or something, around her neck.

Greta Gerwig in Theory

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Greta Gerwig attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

That's an interesting dress on her, but I'm distracted by the fact that her makeup has her resembling Junior Lady Gaga somehow.

Felicity Jones in Theory

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actress Felicity Jones attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

Funky structure, but her head-styling was more punk, honestly.

Charlize in Dior

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Charlize Theron attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

The bigger news is that this was during her relationship with Sean Penn, and she brought him. It was weird to see

Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actress Hailee Steinfeld attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

This is so good, but the shoes are making me scream.

Zoe Saldana in Michael Kors

This is fantastic. The unusual shape is spot-on. At the time of course I was cranky about it looking like shower caps. I am trying to grow.

Jessica Pare in Kors

Michael MIGHT have afforded them fabrics that were more different?!?

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Zooey Deschanel attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

She looks like a rich bridesmaid who just couldn't resist adding a few flourishes.

Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Lena Dunham attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

I want to love this. But it looks like a ballet leotard with a bedsheet over it.

Ashley (in vintage Ferre) and M-K (in Chanel) Olsen

They look good -- Ashley in particular is killing it.

Allison Williams in Oscar de la Renta

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actress Allison Williams attends the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images)

That color is super on her. I don't know why I put this in BIG, except that I guess the train is long.

Solange in Phillip Lim
