Claire Danes in Zac Posen

Truly, this is one of the all-time great Met Gala dresses, and even though Zac Posen's line is no more, he will always be remembered for this. I assume it will end up in a museum eventually.

As you may recall, it lights up. This was the PERFECT use of the "man and machinery" theme and just very inspired. (It also won Best Dressed from Fug Nation.)

Karoline Kurkova in Marchesa

This actually also had some kind of LED lights something or other that were supposed to light up different colors based on something to do with people's social media feelings? As a dress, I actually think it's lovely, but technically I suspect it did not quite WORK.

Zoe Saldana in D&G

Epic.

Epically BIZARRE, as choices go. She looks like she's a Hamilton mega-fan -- which, who isn't! But that is not the theme! It also doesn't fit her that well? This one just continues to truly confound me.

Willow Smith, Jaden Smith

Willow's version is much better -- they actually both look pretty rad here.

This dress is GLORIOUS. Talk about something that she could re-wear.

Hailee Steinfeld in H&M

If I recall correctly, this was an attempt at "eco-fashion" -- sometimes celebs get really invested in for like one event every two years. It's not great. (It's unfortunate but whenever someone wears H&M to these things, you can always kinda tell that it's H&M, in comparison.)

Kendall Jenner in Versace

He literally cut this ON her body and you can tell -- that was also a very clever use of man and machinery, literally, to make her dress. This is very abs-forward, but it's also really great. (She arrived in a very gorgeous coat, and then for the afterparty, this skirt was cut off into a mini. Really clever.)

I will say, I do like the STYLE of this dress on Beyonce. Imagine it in like a burgundy velvet. Dreamy.

Naomi Watts in Burberry

A LOT of people thought about this one and decided to just go metallics -- but hot damn, it really worked out in this instance.

Meanwhile, this has a kind of "the robots have come to Downton" feel.

Off theme, probably, but also great? Blake's pretty good at the Met.

Allow me to remind you that this had sheer portions cut over over the hips in the back.

Madonna

But THIS had FULL LACE ASS CHEEKS. Oh Madonna. You used to be more interesting than this.

I suspect this skirt was fantastic in person; I forgot she'd broken her arm, here.

This sort of feels like she was going to wear it to the Punk Year and didn't and decided she might as well just repurpose it.

Nina Dobrev in Marchesa

I truly think that Marchesa gave this dress to almost everyone -- Leighton Meester wore a VERY similar one a few years prior to this -- and while it's fine, it's also just...fine.

Amy Schumer

This dress is pretty great, although it IS sliding off her body. Weirdly, for a moment I thought she was Cameron Diaz here.

This was CUSTOM MADE for her, and as such, shouldn't it have a little more pizzazz???

Bee Shaffer in McQueen

This is SO pretty.

Uma Thurman

This feels more like Cannes to me.

Amber Valletta

She had  ROUGH RUN of Met Galas, and this was a step-up.

Grimes

What an interesting road it's been for Grimes from then, to now.

Aja Naomi King

Well, this is sort of boring but she does LOOK GOOD in it.

Emily Ratajkowski

As per usual.

Kate Upton

This is pretty dang good on her.

Kate Mara

I didn't like this at the time but now I'm sort of....upgraded the neutral.

Demi Lovato in Moschino

She notably had a REALLY bad time at this Met Gala, per her own statements later.

Elizabeth Debecki in Prada

This is not on theme at all, but I do EXTREMELY LOVE IT.

Freida Pinto

Very Stars Wars and good.

Allison Williams in Peter Pilotto

This was superb. She came in second in Best Dressed in this

Saoirse Ronan in Christopher Kane

Kimye

This is honestly pretty good for the theme. Remember Kanye wearing those colored contacts, and when asked why, his entire response was, "VIBES"?

Lily Aldridge

VERY Westwood Robot Before She Gets Dressed.

Zendaya in Michael Kors

But this was so good. That hair is a VERY high degree of difficulty, too.

Amandla Stenberg

I DO wish this wasn't quite so SHINY? She wears it well though.

Gigi and Zayn

THANK YOU, this is the ROBOT ARM I was WAITING FOR!

Emma Stone

That waist-detailing was probably right on target.

Irina Shayk

This, on the other hand, just CONFOUNDNGLY BAD. What does America have to do with this? FOR ONCE THIS IS NOT OUR FAULT.

Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Nate Parker

Michael B Jordan break!! (This was a great look from Lupita, too.)

Zoe Kravitz

I'm never gonna be mad at a dramatic mask at a gala.

Lady Gaga

As Heather and I said at the time, we're pretty sure she just dragged this out of the back of her closet at the last minute.

Emma Roberts

As dresses go, this is honestly pretty good.

Taylor Swift

Cynthia Erivo

I still cannot believe this was by Coach! It's so good!

Zoy Deutch

I both love this AND wish I couldn't see her undies.

Rachel McAdams

Ditto.

Kate Hudson

This is better than I gave it credit for at the time.

Naomi Harris in Burberry

This is great but a LEETLE upholstered?

Cindy Crawford

VERY glam and apt.

Kristen Stewart in Chanel

I feel like this was also an opportunity for HER to do something really interesting but still on brand, and this ain't it. I don't love Chanel for her.

Jennifer Hudson

"Maybe I'll get married tonight! WE DON'T KNOW."

Miranda Kerr in Louis Vuitton

Hey! An LV look snuck in here. This one is actually pretty fun.

Bella Hadid

I do think this would be great without the ENORMO SOCKS.

Liu Wen

She's SO good at this event.

Kylie Jenner

VERY predictable.

Rita Ora in Vera Wang (!!)

RITA GETS IT.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki, just save this for the bondage theme that we all know will eventually get here.

Jenni Koner, Jenna Lyons, Lena Dunham

This was one of my favorite Lena Dunham looks, I think. She's a very cute Jenna Lyons.

Solange

I mean! Yes!

Alexa Chung

The good news is that she can also look very cool in this as an old lady.

Margot Robbie

Clearly, here, the bracelets were the stars.

Brie Larson

I forgot how many people decided that black lipstick was the play.

Thalia

YES, MORE BIONIC ARMS PLEASE.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

DEEPLY reasonable.

Dakota Johnson

I really kinda loved this dress, and also I keep thinking that's the newest version of Stanley Tucci with her.

Florence Welch

Perfect for her, and this.

Emily Blunt

This was excellent on her.

Maria Sharapova

I find her highly overrated BUT! That earring is rad.

In 2016, the Met Gala Asked Us to Contemplate “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology"
This needed more bionic arms.
