It's going to be hard to top this. I know she's wearing the guest of honor's creation, but imagine being able to do it the way she does. That is a THING.

Caroline Kennedy in Comme des Garcons

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 01: Caroline Kennedy attends the "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between" Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 1, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by John Shearer/Getty Images)

People seemed to like this. It is not for me --  I think she actually makes Rihanna's case for why CdG is a trick to pull off -- but you cannot deny that SHE WENT FOR IT. And of all the people at this thing who I figured might, Caroline Kennedy was last on my list. So she also gets points for shock and boldness.

Julianne Moore in Calvin Klein

This is a light, airy festival of yay.

Miranda Kerr in Oscar de la Renta

Perhaps it's not the best fit on this night, but it's otherwise an absolute delight.

Laura Osnes in Christian Siriano

I am not personally sure that bodice is my jam, but the skirt? I want to lie down on it and roll around and just let her drag me around all night.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marni

A creative and lively approach from an unusual designer. In this context alone do I think it's a best-dressed candidate.

Lena Dunham in Elizabeth Kennedy

I believe this dress evokes this from Kennedy's Fall 2017 collection, and I kind of now wish the hit of blue was still present. But I still think Lena looks great in it, and it's a smart, fun choice with a funky fabric.

Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel

Y'all went nuts for this. I can see why. I wish Diane Kruger had worn it.

Rita Ora in Marchesa

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 01: Rita Ora attends the "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between" Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 1, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images)

This one divided people. We all seemed to agree that the magic trick she pulled on her head is REALLY nifty, and this DOES seem like a good Marchesa-fied version of a Rei Kawakubo style. There are questions, but considering that Rita would probably wear this anywhere you asked her to, I think it's worth applauding her for picking her event correctly.

Ashley Graham in H&M

A tip of the hat to H&M for being very thoughtful in its construction, and for blessing Ashley's curves with proper tailoring and design.

Zendaya in D&G

Is there nothing she can't do? The hair and lipstick are perfect with it. The cloud of curls, in fact, seals it for me.

Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren

We've found Carmen Sandiego, and y'all, she is NOT coming to jail.

Andrea Riseborough in Tom Ford

I never recognize her anymore. I DO recognize a great dress, though.

Blake Lively in Versace

My theory on this dress is, Blake had it in the works already for the Oscars -- and then Ryan wasn't nominated, so she decided to have them work it into something for the Met. I could be way off-base, but I read a blind item that she was VERY disappointed when he didn't get a nod, and it stuck in my brain. This is a smashing gown, so I'm glad she wore it somewhere, although Cannes might actually have been the place.

Emily Ratajkowski in Marc Jacobs

The best she's ever looked, I think. By a mile.

J.Lo in Valentino

Because we write as J.Lo, it means we don't always actually say what we think of her clothes. Let me be clear: I LOVE her in this, and I don't even care if she went off-theme or on-theme.

Aymeline Valade in Marni

Marni went two-for-two on this night, I think.

Tracee Ellis Ross in Comme des Garcons

She is so damn cool.

Reese Witherspoon in Mugler

I found this EXTREMELY refreshing on her. I know some people wanted her to lean into Dynasty and deploy bigger hair, but I'm torn on that one. It might've looked TOO camp.

Katie Holmes in Zac Posen

This is the most Posen-y dress that ever Posened. It's ALL his favorite things to do.

Fei Fei Sun in Alberta Ferretti

Perfect.

Solange in Thom Browne

And so is this. Make no mistake, if she'd worn a gigantic pool raft while walking down the street, we would have been like WTF SOLANGE YOU PERPLEXING ANGEL, but this to me demonstrates one of the best interpretations of theme from someone who DIDN'T wear Rei herself.

Celine Dion in Versace

Is the dress a winner? No, but I was not going to miss a chance to link to that Vogue video again.

Kerry Washington in Michael Kors

This ALSO nailed the theme well.

Cara Delevingne

AND THIS. It's so good. Cara should keep the hair.

Ruby Rose in Burberry

I always love seeing The Wranglers at work.

I feel like this should've been a BIGGER night for Ralph & Russo than just this one dress, but what a dress it is.

Margaret Qualley in Prabal Gurung

We couldn't let this slide under the radar. It's too lovely.

Cynthia Erivo in Thom Browne

Thom Browne really nailed it, between her and Solange.

Ruth Negga in Valentino

This was breathtaking, from all angles.

Diddy

I couldn't resist.
