## Madonna in Jean Paul Gaultier

It feels like this should have been Madonna's night, but instead we got a half-baked pile of references that other people either individually or collectively did better. It's depressing to think that Madonna isn't even the best Madonna anymore, although JPG could've done her more of a solid on that front. Theirs is a storied collaboration in music history, and this feels like a hastily written chapter. (However, apparently she performed "Like a Prayer" at the party, and THAT is exceptional and as it should be.)

Something about this photo beautifully illustrates the complications of veils. The entire left side of her face seems bothered by it.

Reader, I howled. I also only just realized this is a headpiece, not a veil; for some reason until right now my tired eyes thought there was a veil holding together those strips, but no, I think they're just dangling. It has a veil AURA, though. It also has a fortune-teller-lampshade aura.

I cannot believe that this is Dior's only entry this year. But at least they... swung at something? I appreciate that it doesn't feel like trotting out every other Dior (AHEM, VUITTON). She seriously looks like she's dressed up AS the actual confessioal.

I think this outfit is kooky, also, but you can't deny she poured herself into the imagery. This all feels like she invented a character for herself and is attending not as Kate Bosworth, but as Mary Margaret Catherine, Bride of Christ, who has not yet been told that this is code for "nun."

Vera is in quite the getup herself, one which receives an emphatic and hard pass from me. Ariana's is... interesting. Truly, the veil/bow is absurd and looks super childish on her, although she's just started working with Law Roach and I bet he's going to ease her away from all that twee stuff to which she has clung. I'm hopeful. As for the rest..

... the pattern there is the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and I enjoy that Vera took a complex textile like that and turned it into something suitably dramatic. I wish it didn't have the tulle mudding it up, but maybe that helps take the edge off and makes it feel less overtly busy. In all, for her first Met Gala, I think this is a very good outing.

... I mean, I guess she might be dressed \*as\* the heavens? She certainly looks like a bridesmaid at a really expensive and dramatic wedding on, say, Cloud Seven.

That hat looks like it came from the Kentucky Derby dumpster. The dress's overlay looks like a rejected remnant [from when Karl made this sack Kristen Stewart wore a year ago](https://gofugyourself.com/kristen-stewart-really-needs-some-sleep-yall-03-2017?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io), and then trimmed into what he must imagine is a very holy and gigantic snap-crotch bodysuit.

This is so un-Zac to me. I have to say, though, that she actually looks pretty damn gorgeous. The satin is behaving uncommonly well.

This looks like a young Elizabeth Tudor, brimming with a jealous rage and plotting ways to push Robert Dudley's wife down the stairs. (Which someone eventually maybe actually DID.) The Hannah Horvath take on Elizabeth I would be a fairly entertaining SNL sketch.
