(Photo by Mark Mainz/Getty Images) This is before the Gala was quite so obsessed with theme and dress code as it is now. I believe the exhibit was "Goddess" and I guess you can argue this is ethereal, but I don't like that it looks like the dress's glittery bit has slipped down. I don't think it DID; I think that's the design. (Photo by Evan Agostini/Getty Images) This gala was a tribute to Chanel, and at the time I think Nic was on the payroll, so this makes sense. (She is, in fact, on the payroll again.) The dress is... very Chanel, and I'd like to have seen it in something other than dark blue and black, because it is not compelling. This was the McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit, and her poorly fit Pucci was reportedly so tight that she had Jay-Z and someone else carry her up the stairs. Although that may be exaggerated reporting, because this is the only photo I can find. Did Beyonce scrub them all? Her head looks fabulous, and while I don't love the sheerness necessarily, it's for me the best of any of her looks. Givenchy did not really earn her loyalty FOUR times in a row. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic) For "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" Nicole wore an archival Balenciaga design that they remade -- or, if you like, reawakened. I like it on her, and Balenciaga was SO terrible at the time that it felt like an appropriate admission of guilt to use the archives to achieve actual glamour. Even the beads in her hair are meant to evoke the ones she iconically wore when she burst onto the scene.
