Katy Perry

Everyone on Twitter went with Lumiere jokes for this one, so I'm going to go in a different direction and suggest that Katy is in costume as the chandelier from Phantom of the Opera. It would have been so moving if she'd secretly had herself hoisted up to the ceiling and then just abruptly lowered herself to the floor as her arrival.

She had SO MUCH trouble moving in this -- the E! hosts helpfully noted that there were changing areas atop the stairs so that the stars could de-layer after the big photo ops -- but she found a way to smile through whatever awkwardness it was. BLESS. I actually think she looks great with a chandelier on her head. WHO KNEW.

I sincerely didn't think she'd be able to top Katy Perry Takes Her Catholic Imagination Someplace Super Literal. I should have known better.

Tracee Ellis Ross

As I noted for Cosmo, she's basically dressed as a slightly askew work of art from inside the Met's walls -- and as her own self-portrait, which on a night when Anna allegedly banned selfies is sort of apt. I am not sure if this is CAMP, exactly? But it's funny.

I also love the idea that she might've casually left the frame on all night, and if you wanted to chat with her, you did it through the diamond.

Kacey Musgraves

Kacey is dressed as Barbie. If this had been six years ago, Miley would have been in this outfit. And that actually might have been funnier. Kacey often has a glazed doll expression on her face, so it's very nearly too on-the-nose. But Jeremy Scott nailed the details. The pink is perfect, and the hair dryer purse and the size and shape of the glasses both crack me up.

Gwen Stefani

I arranged these from most-to-least campy, and Gwen's does fall smack in the middle for me. It's a little bit Madonna, a little bit Dynasty, and a LOT bit Hey, I'm Gwen Stefani, and I've Still Freaking Got It. Which she does. But this also does look like something she'd wear on stage. I grappled with this: If you are essentially dressed as yourself, or in something you'd wear anyway to another event, is it truly CAMP in that context? (The context being you.)

This feels like it was for a cosmic-themed Met Gala. I did laugh at the big cuffs, though, which lookd for a second like massive Mickey Mouse hands.

This isn't as much campy as Cannes, honestly. It's like Cannes-plus. Her arm warmers are bringing something extra it's true, but the cutouts seem banal at this point and the skirt isn't great. Also her right breast is here under duress, I think.

However, those EARRINGS. And I rather like the wig on her.

That piece on the right is a ruffle attached to her hip. This doesn't work for me. It's more I'm Dressed As Donatella Versace For Halloween, and it's not flattering on her.

Sarah Paulson

Well, I love her purse. And is there a mail slot somewhere around her knees? Otherwise this feels like a wasted opportunity on a person who can pull off SO MUCH extravagance.

Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke in Christopher Kane

I remember thinking this Kane show felt a little Moschino, so that's why I threw it in here. They're doing a good job camping and vamping it up in outfits that are already flagrantly goofy. The giant gem purses are funny. They honestly look like they're workshopping Romy and Michele's Fashion Week Excursion.

They seemed to have a blast, though. They were all goofball poses on the red carpet, so it was fun to see them cracking themselves up here. But it's driving me weirdly crazy that both gloves on Lena's dress have thumbs on the same side. One seems to be palm-side up and one is palm-side down, and great, because it looks less like she's being groped, but only MILDLY less, and it's REALLY making me want to go properly arrange my own set of rubber gloves.
