## Lena Waithe and Kerby Jean-Raymond in Pyer Moss

There's so much more going on here, too: The pin stripes are in fact tiny lyrics from Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out" and Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." And the buttons were made specially for them by Johnny Nelson Jewelry; Kerby's depict the faces of eight of his favorite rappers, and Lena's, eight LGBTQ icons. [Check out the brand's Instagram for the details](https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKWHJFFa5I/?utm%5Fsource=ig%5Fembed). It's incredibly cool and I seriously wish every outfit came with detailed flyers.

Danai said on Instagram that her influence is Oscar Wilde -- "[the dandy reimagined](https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJDCBBgJYB/?ref=go-fug-yourself.ghost.io)" -- and she certainly looks dramatic and good. I don't know if it's camp, entirely.

## Gwyneth Paltrow in Chloe

Lord, grant me the confidence of Gwyneth Paltrow showing up on Camp Night at the Met -- an event she has PUBLICLY dissed as being lame and boring and awful -- in a hideous yellow nightgown. Somewhere in her history, there was a Gwyneth who I think would've had unself-conscious fun with this theme, but I guess once you've started selling everyone vagina eggs you're all out of camp? Perhaps she should have come AS one of the vagina eggs.

Her dress says "negativity is noise" all over it. Well, it's gonna get loud in here, Kerry, because it's not particularly campy. It's just sort of an Instagram meme come to life, which is a theme I'm SURE someone will suggest in like five years. The scribbles are hard to read, the tank top is cheesy, and I feel like you're scolding everyone in advance for not being as pleased with it as you are. I will give Tory Burch props for how very, very different it is than anything she usually designs. For HER, the sheer size of that is probably the campiest she's ever been.

Kerry seemed very pleased with herself indeed. Which, great! I wish I had been as pleased with her makeup.

This ALSO is not camp. It's just... Erdem doing Erdem, but with a slightly bigger skirt. I like to think Awkwafina back there is also in the act of wondering what out of ANY of this actually is camp. Let's throw it to her, shall we?

## Awkwafina in Altuzarra

She looks great in that, but could've worn it on any of her summer press tours or even IN either of her big summer movies (*Ocean's Eight*, *Crazy Rich Asians*).

I guess... the hair? FOR REAL she reminds me of Catherine O'Hara now. That is some Moira Rose facial realness.

## Constance Wu in Marchesa

She also seemed very taken with this ensemble, and I'm glad for her, but the theme wasn't Sexy Flapper. If you are hell-bent on wearing Marchesa -- and you all know my feelings on that by now, given that nothing has changed there -- then at LEAST go all-out with some of the crackpot confections they made at their voluminous peak.

## Keiynan Lonsdale in Manish Arora

Keiynan, formerly on *The Flash* and *Legends of Tomorrow*, has been very public since 2017 about exploring his sexuality and identity, and he posted this outfit on Instagram with a comment about how he's still trying to figure himself out -- and the dress is all butterflies, which represent a metamorphosis, so it's all very intricate and thoughtful and personal, and I love it. Phew, that was a long sentence.

## Alexa Chung in Alexachung

She made some comment about how she decided the most campy subversive thing to do would be to wear something super short to this party. Has.... she never looked at other people at the Met before? Kendall Jenner basically came naked one year.

## Alicia Keys in Carolina Herrera

She cited Grace Jones as her inspiration, and I feel like Grace Jones would look at this and think, "REALLY?" I feel like simply SAYING "Grace Jones" and wearing a hood is not enough. She looks more like a hybrid of Galadriel (Cate) and Arwen (Liv) in *Lord of the Rings*.

## Gemma Chan in Tom Ford

She looks to die for -- like a beautiful queen -- and absolutely nothing at all like the theme. She looks like the heroine in a mega-glam Chinese opera, making this very appropriate for the year THAT was the theme, but she also has a bit of a deity quality to her, which would've worked for last year.

This is another nice enough dress that seems to be hoping the eye makeup will make it camp. All it did, though, was make me think that Sienna Miller looks like Michelle Pfeiffer.

Ack, I didn't get the credit on this until after we'd posted about Tommy's contributions. I deeply enjoy this -- she looks super -- but it's not so much campy as Cannes.

I will say this: Tommy did turn out a lot of work that I would NOT have identified as his, which means he was actually reaching far and wide to experiment. I applaud that. This is all certainly very dramatic.

Margaret is in Valli, and it's boring and premiere-worthy and... I think some Valli outfits are IN the exhibit, but they're just the usual Pile O'Ruffles and I would love to actually read the literature from the museum on why certain things were included.

People seemed surprised that RuPaul didn't come in drag, but he has always said he only does that when it's a paid gig -- it's a persona, a performance -- and he can do it as precisely and perfectly as his reputation warrants. It would be churlish to complain that he therefore somehow punted on the theme, because LOOK AT THIS SUIT. It's glorious and over the top, and he's reminding people that there are plenty of different ways for a man to be camp. Page Six had an interesting piece in which the writer pointed out that simply bending gender or leaning into gender fluidity is not by definition "camp," and certainly not in a time when people are becoming more comfortable expressing that as a very real, NON-camp part of their identities, and don't need to be told that their human struggle is campy. Anyway, I digress: Good for Ru for sticking to his guns and doing what he wanted, and doing it stunningly I might add. \[He told ET that to him, camp is "people who can break the fourth wall, who can see beyond the facade of life, and that's really where life begins -- when you can see it as a construct, and then have fun with it, and laugh at it."\]

He's a Coach spokesperson now, which is concerning. I saw his E! interview, too, and the way he described this outfit made both him AND Coach seem a bit reluctant to do that much other than add some sparkle. So mission accomplished, I guess?

MJ is on Pose, and I'm wondering if Richard was spending a little too much time on his own getup to give her anything more than this animal-print tuffet.

I can't decide what I make of this, although she's serving it with confidence.

I wish I had seen this sooner! It's a bride-and-groom mash-up and it works on her.

## Hailey Bieber in Alexander Wang

Standing thusly, in this dress, she is doing better modeling than I have yet seen from her. That top is SKIN TIGHT. And this look is not camp. The little '60s ponytail doesn't do it. Nor does...

... the visible beaded thong.

I mean, I assume all his resources were used up on Cardigan B's gown. This is goofy and surrealist, but not necessarily camp to me.

I have learned not to expect anything else from them.

## Irina Shayk in Burberry

Burberry is now under the stewardship of Riccardo Tisci, who designed the floral sofa gown that Kim wore to the Met while pregnant -- the one where the sleeves were also gloves. I mention it because that's ALSO what Irina's giant sleeves are doing here. The dress has some nice dramatic bones, but it feels like she kinda blew off the rest of it? And where is Bradley?

He looks like a murder suspect in an Agatha Christie novel. She's wearing custom Roksanda, but it looks like a Valentino knockoff.

## Hamish Bowles in Margiela

How could I NOT end with Hamish, a longtime and famed Vogue employee with a dapper and outlandish sense of style, who I think found his calling. I also for a second thought this was Victor Garber. Let's figure out a movie to be made about this night, and Victor can PLAY Hamish.
