There's so much more going on here, too: The pin stripes are in fact tiny lyrics from Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out" and Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." And the buttons were made specially for them by Johnny Nelson Jewelry; Kerby's depict the faces of eight of his favorite rappers, and Lena's, eight LGBTQ icons. Check out the brand's Instagram for the details. It's incredibly cool and I seriously wish every outfit came with detailed flyers.

Danai said on Instagram that her influence is Oscar Wilde -- "the dandy reimagined" -- and she certainly looks dramatic and good. I don't know if it's camp, entirely.

Lord, grant me the confidence of Gwyneth Paltrow showing up on Camp Night at the Met -- an event she has PUBLICLY dissed as being lame and boring and awful -- in a hideous yellow nightgown. Somewhere in her history, there was a Gwyneth who I think would've had unself-conscious fun with this theme, but I guess once you've started selling everyone vagina eggs you're all out of camp? Perhaps she should have come AS one of the vagina eggs.

Her dress says "negativity is noise" all over it. Well, it's gonna get loud in here, Kerry, because it's not particularly campy. It's just sort of an Instagram meme come to life, which is a theme I'm SURE someone will suggest in like five years. The scribbles are hard to read, the tank top is cheesy, and I feel like you're scolding everyone in advance for not being as pleased with it as you are. I will give Tory Burch props for how very, very different it is than anything she usually designs. For HER, the sheer size of that is probably the campiest she's ever been.

She also seemed very taken with this ensemble, and I'm glad for her, but the theme wasn't Sexy Flapper. If you are hell-bent on wearing Marchesa -- and you all know my feelings on that by now, given that nothing has changed there -- then at LEAST go all-out with some of the crackpot confections they made at their voluminous peak.

Keiynan, formerly on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, has been very public since 2017 about exploring his sexuality and identity, and he posted this outfit on Instagram with a comment about how he's still trying to figure himself out -- and the dress is all butterflies, which represent a metamorphosis, so it's all very intricate and thoughtful and personal, and I love it. She cited Grace Jones as her inspiration, and I feel like Grace Jones would look at this and think, "REALLY?" I feel like simply SAYING "Grace Jones" and wearing a hood is not enough. She looks more like a hybrid of Galadriel (Cate) and Arwen (Liv) in Lord of the Rings.

She looks to die for -- like a beautiful queen -- and absolutely nothing at all like the theme. She looks like the heroine in a mega-glam Chinese opera, making this very appropriate for the year THAT was the theme, but she also has a bit of a deity quality to her, which would've worked for last year.

RuPaul
Costume Institute Benefit celebrating the opening of Camp: Notes on Fashion, Arrivals, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA - 06 May 2019
People seemed surprised that RuPaul didn't come in drag, but he has always said he only does that when it's a paid gig -- it's a persona, a performance -- and he can do it as precisely and perfectly as his reputation warrants. It would be churlish to complain that he therefore somehow punted on the theme, because LOOK AT THIS SUIT. It's glorious and over the top, and he's reminding people that there are plenty of different ways for a man to be camp. Page Six had an interesting piece in which the writer pointed out that simply bending gender or leaning into gender fluidity is not by definition "camp," and certainly not in a time when people are becoming more comfortable expressing that as a very real, NON-camp part of their identities, and don't need to be told that their human struggle is campy. Anyway, I digress: Good for Ru for sticking to his guns and doing what he wanted, and doing it stunningly I might add. [He told ET that to him, camp is "people who can break the fourth wall, who can see beyond the facade of life, and that's really where life begins -- when you can see it as a construct, and then have fun with it, and laugh at it."]
