I have SO MANY FEELINGS! (a) I'm so so so so so happy to see a real awards show with a real red carpet and real outfits! (b) I LOVE that Carey Mulligan wore a GIANT GOLD DRESS. (c) Remember this amazing other gold dress she wore?. I like her in a metallic. (d) We called this for Kaley Cuoco originally, and it DID come with a gold face mask. Can you imagine if she'd shown up in that?

I would not have guessed this was Vera Wang; apparently, per the brand's Instagram, "Andra Day chose a custom liquid gold metal mesh cut away gown with classic Vera Wang draping, asymmetric straps and a high slit skirt that plunges into a dramatic side train." This feels VERY Studio 54 to me. Andra Day spent a lot of her earlier career getting sort of costume-y in her clothing, and so this makes sense to me for her.

Sigh. I really like Vanessa Kirby so much. She's a great actor, she's so pretty, and I think her styling is often kind of a bummer, as this just feels sort of underwhelming -- even though it's custom! I wish she'd worn the Versace she wore to the BAFTAs to this. This is just...a bummer. I feel bummed.

I will say that this fits her beautifully from the back, and the train is lovely. I think I wish there were more contrast between her skin tone and the dress's color. (I do think it's possible this is more ethereal in person.)

I appreciate that the super dark lip is presumably an attempt to make this feel less Pretty Pretty Princess, but the styling on this ultimately feels too harsh on her. Overall, I feel like this is a bit of a do-over. (Luckily, Vanessa Kirby will certainly get another shot at the Oscars.)

Having said that, I think she also looks a little COLD and she probably was. (Perhaps she was chilled by all those JEWELS, as they are some major, glorious ice.) I need to be upfront and note that I think this would have been better if the open bit had been a fabric bit, or even if it had had a narrower opening.
