2017: Janelle Monae in Jenny Packham

This is a really pretty and interesting dress, and I never would have pegged it as a Packham in a million years. It's perfect on her.

2017: Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano

Sparkly and blue, a hint of a semi-cape, and visibly shiny shoes? YES. I really love how quietly lovely this is.

2017: Kirsten Dunst

Kiki does the vintage look very well. I feel like she's about to reach for a cigarette in a long silver houder and say Daaaaaaahling in a mid-Atlantic accent.

2017: Dev Patel

He was so good in Lion, and his mane was equally delicious.

This is great, HER HAIR IS GREAT, and also she's 2 for 2 in our Palm Springs slideshows so maybe it's secretly her favorite fest.

2017: Octavia Spencer in Eliza J

I really like this, on its own merits and as a change from the Tadashi Shoji she often favors.

2017: Laura Dern in J. Mendel

Oh, no, this is giving her boobs Insect Eyes.

2017: Ruth Negga in Valentino

This is WAY more bare than she usually goes. I want to say she did an interview after this point about how she prefers to cover up a bit more, but maybe I'm hallucinating it? Her head is gorgeous here but the dress is just a messy salute to marine life or something.

2017: Nicole Kidman in Dior

This is, head to toe, one of Nicole's very worst.

2017: Laura Linney

This is what happens when you play Princess Bride and offer to be the Six-Fingered Man to somebody's Inigo.

2017: Aldis Hodge

Dapper.

2017: Pharrell Williams and Mimi Valdes

Crapper! Just kidding; I just wanted to make the rhyme. However, the jeans ARE incredibly weird here. He's a matador on the top and a cowboy on the bottom.

2017: Mahershala Ali

I miss him.

2018: Laurie Metcalf

This is an interesting dress and I think it's suffering from the specific way she's standing here. I forgot to go back and look for a better shot. Sorry, Laurie. But the color blocking on it is unusual in both shape and choice of hues.

2018: Jessica Chastain in Givenchy

I am not sold on this, and I don't think she is either.

2018: Salma Hayek in Gucci

This is pretty good, and considering some of the crimes Gucci has perpetrated on her person over the years, might even be GREAT.

2018: Jessica Paré

How dour.

2018: Saoirse Ronan in Gucci

YIKES. That dress is screamingly loud and twee, and then you get to the shoes, which I think must be very confused about why they're there.

2018: Gal Gadot in OdlR

If you want to do the long jacket and the long shorts, or short pants, maybe pick one or the other. Both together just looks like she was playing in someone else's closet. This is TERRIBLE on her. How do you botch Gal Gadot that badly?

2018: Gal in Esteban Cortazar

This at least FITS.

2018: Allison Janney in Lela Rose

MY LIEGE.

2018: Mary J. Blige in Elie Saab

This needed lining help, I think. Also: The trophies at this festival are blown-class curiosities and I find them hilarious.

2018: Jessica Chastain in Givenchy

This is better, but... still confused? It feels like Givenchy is trying to ape someone else. Altuzarra, maybe.

Yalitza Aparicio in Adeam

Yalitza! Man, talk about being chucked headlong into the spotlight. She handled it with incredible poise.

Marina de Tavira in Kors

Kors rarely steers a lady wrong.

2018: Lucy Boynton in Emilia Wickstead

Of all the wacky things she's worn, this is also among the least terrible. I might even like it, but bright silver shoes are a strange choice with a gold-inflected dress. I think a color would've been better.

Laura Harrier in Cushnie

This was so nice on her - very simple, but a great departure from her usual Vuitton. I will miss Cushnie (it closed in October).

2018: Emma Stone I (in LV) and Olivia Colman

Emma Stone is proof you can live very quietly as megafamous person, if you want to. She got engaged and we only knew because her fiance posted their photo. She got married in relative secret and is having a baby the world just found out about. It CAN be done. Also that's one of the better things Vuitton gave her.

2018: Regina King in Valentino

Very fun. A little heavy, with the long one-sided drape? I think it still would have been good if both sleeves were like the one on the right.

2018: Richard E. Grant and Melissa McCarthy

This movie was so good. She looks great here, and he was just SO over the moon to be nominated for anything this whole season.

2018: Linda Cardellini in Lhuillier

This might've needed splashier lipstick. It's VERY pretty.

2018: Timothee Chalamet

Oh, so long ago. The hair! I think June Allyson had that hair in her Little Women.

2019: Danai Gurira

I adore this.

2019: John David Washington

I am not sure that fits, but it's INTERESTING, at least, and I appreciate him for it.

2019: Laura Dern

This is a great suit that maybe needed a better solution underneath it than her bra.

2019: Emily Blunt

SO BRIGHT. I don't hate it but might advocate for it to have been sleeveless.

2019: In Roland Mouret

She NABS. But she does not NAE, as you shall see...

Those are VERY glamorous globes in her lobes.
