2011: Ruby Rose

Yes, this is Ruby Rose! That Ruby Rose! In 2011, I was like, "This person is some kind of DJ in Australia!" And now she's our erstwhile Batwoman. I'm not sure if this is a hat, or some kind of skull shield attached to novelty glasses, but it sure looks annoying as hell to wear. I wonder if she still owns it. She could have gone as herself for Halloween.

2007: Melissa George

This hat is fine, but the dress looks like someone in Marie Antoinette's court ate it after all the cake was gone.

2009: Zara Phillips

The best part about this is, being a royal and being Zara, it's POSSIBLE that is not a painting on the wall behind her but in fact just stuff springing forth from her head. I do not believe that is TRUE, but it's BELIEVABLE.

2010: Brynne Edelsten

Someone in Australia can explain her better, but Brynne was at the time a socialite married to some rich dude named Geoffrey, and therefore able to buy several coats of spray tan to go with her massive peacock feathers.

2011: Brynne Edelsten

I've never before seen someone buy a fasciator to go with their flirty nightie.

2013: Brynne Edelsten

That's not a hat; that's a state fair consolation corsage.

2014: Geoffrey Edelsten and Gabi Grecko

Geoffrey, in the yellow here, split with Brynne and got with Gabi here instead -- who is here the same age Brynne was when THEY got married. Don't be such a DiCaprio, Geoffrey. Gabi's hat is great but this whole thing feels less like something she's doing for race day and more like some deep life performance art that she takes very seriously.

2011: J. Alexander

I am concerned about the weight imbalance here.

2011: Dita von Teese

Dita REALLY loves a tall, flat hat, as if she bought a regular one and just turned it vertical. There's this...

2013: Dita

... and then this, which I guess she filled with flowers first. I LIKE both of them. She just has a type.

2011 Kerri Anne Kennerly

Psst, Kerri Anne, your napkin goes in your lap.

2011: Rebecca Judd

Was EVERYONE into napkin-folding seminars this year?

2012: Rose Byrne

Rose must have realized too late that she completely forgot the "hat" portion of affairs, and just made a barette in five minutes.

2012: Mischa Barton

The hat embodiment of a wisp of smoke rising from a cigarette.

2013: Lleyton Hewitt and Bec Cartwright

And another!

Lleyton Hewitt and Bec Cartwright

Is this too much neon, or too much spray tan? Or both?

2012: Sophie Monk

In space, they hadn't learned about colorful shoes yet.

2013: Lauren Phillips

This looks like Robin Hood shot her updo with an arrow that had a message attached.

2013

This is a random racegoer, but it's such a phenomenal photo. And hat.

2013: Danielle Spencer

Danielle, once married to Russell Crowe, did okay with her dress, boringly with her shoes, and then pulled a shocker with her hat's color scheme.

2014: Danielle Spencer

Much more coordinated, but she really needs to invest in some new pumps.

2013: Kate Upton

This is less of a hat design and more of a tulle tangle.

2013: Coco Rocha

As usual, Coco is posing the shit out of it, but the hat looks like some wacky Minnie Mouse tribute.

2014: Renae Ayris

Her brain leak is so beautiful.

2014: Kate Peck

Is she... wearing a thong on her head?

2014 flock to the Birdcage to celebrate Melbourne Cup Day

The man in this shot is a hat designer, I believe, and his head looks suitably perilous.

2014: Maria Venuti

Maria is a singer, and I am pretty sure this entire thing was semi-homemade at 3 a.m.

Kate Peck, 2018

This hat is literally what my brain feels like right now.

2019

This is a random person from last year, entering what I believe is a fashion contest. It looks like it's a floral interpretation of The Upside Down or something.

I hope these are also pinatas.

And this is clearly the woman who has been presumed dead for years and is biding her time until she throws off her disguise and reveals herself to her now-remarried partner.

Oh, What the Hell, Let's Look at More Hats
BECAUSE.
