This was just a bit tired to me on her, and it didn't look that majestically constructed. SO many of these other outfits had embellishments that were to die for, that made them spevial. This... doesn't. And it SHOULD. The exhibit will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute from 10 May to 08 October 2018. Lots of thought went into this: The designer said, "We wanted the print to subtly reference religion, so we used heavy brush marks to mimic the look of a stained-glass window on a beautifully detailed print which was applied to the foil using an Epson digital printer," and that they used roses and liles because of their religious significance. Amal also chose pants as a nod to female empowerment. All fine. But thrown together, it seems haphazard -- it never gels -- and the pants seem either poorly made or with poorly chosen fabric. She looks like she's had her chest cracked and opened for heart surgery, and the hair spikes are a BIT too evocative of the crown of thorns for me to think they're cool. But Frances... Reader, I laughed, with genuine delight. Frances McDormand NEVER seems to have this kind of sense of humor. The crown was perched so awkwardly. It's the knives. And the bird. Some of that embroidery is so great -- the dress at its bare bones is probably stunning -- and unfortunately my eye only goes to is the insane stuff, which makes it hard to remember the beauty. I just cannot. THANK YOU for swinging big and being unafraid of insanity, but wearing a tabernacle on your head is maybe a bridge too far unless someone is actually using it later to serve the eucharist. I think D&G as a whole feels... like an obvious choice, and I get it, but also maybe too easy. They make stuff replete with religious imagery ALL THE TIME. Am I being unfair? I'm in agreement that the full-on papal tiara was a bit much. The garment itself seems heavy and bulky and slouchy, and worst, unoriginal: We saw this silhouette on Rihanna all of last summer. She wore stuff that was short in front, imprecisely fitted, with a baggy overcoat/skirt that added bulk all around her.
