For people who were worried CMT would neuter this show, we need to give that network and the producers some real credit: Nashville this season has not only NOT dialed down Will's homosexuality, but it's begun an interracial romance, and now oh-so-subtly introduced a transgender character: Juliette's PT

Juliette casually chats to her therapist about her weekend, and then says, "Did you tell your dad?" The therapist sighs sadly that her father's reply was, "God doesn't make mistakes." Her reply to that: "God must've known what he was doing when he made me trans." I wonder if this will tie into Juliette's discovery of religion at all, or if those threads will exist separately, but I did like that they handled the reveal in a conversation that felt totally natural and as if it was between two friends, and not in an OMG WHAAAT kind of way.

Maddie, meanwhile, wants Rayna and Deacon to tell her what they think of Clay. Rayna takes her at her word and starts to tell her that she's a little uneasy, and Maddie basically steps on the gas and shrieks, "I KNOW WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON. YOU DON'T LIKE HIM BECAUSE HE'S BLACK," as if she's been waiting to say that for weeks regardless of whether it's actually true.

Rayna's and Deacon's faces are priceless.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-6-1486534305.jpeg)

And Maddie just keeps going ON about it, even after Rayna is like, "UM, BEEN PRETTY CLEAR ABOUT THE FACT THAT IT'S HIS AGE AND THAT DATING YOU IS ILLEGAL." (Clay is 24, apparently.)

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-7-1486534318.jpeg)

But Maddie has worked up such a head of steam that even Daphne is all in on the WHAAAATface. It's priceless. I love that *Nashville* still leans into Maddie's melodramatic tendencies.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-8-1486534331.jpeg)

For real, Rayna's faces in this entire long scene are amazing. She is NOT HAVING her daughter's insane ranting.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-10-1486534359.jpeg)

Juliette's hair, meanwhile, has settled into a less harsh shade. I know this is the part of her recovery about which you've been most concerned.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-9-1486534344.jpeg)

She's also still hanging out with Hallie, who is, basically, an angel on this Earth: She's a singer who only wants to donate her time to performing for children at community centers and to the parishioners at her church, and craves nothing more in her life than that. "Stick with me -- you'll make an album," Juliette tells her at one point, so I assume this means poor Hallie is about to get RUINED BY FAME.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-11-1486534493.jpeg)

Meanwhile, Pubescent Adam Driver has set his sights on Daphne.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-12-1486534511.jpeg)

Maddie and Clay are up and down; one minute they're having a great time, laughing, and the next she's telling him she doesn't understand how he could be bipolar when everyone loves him so much. Child, you need to read up. He points out that people have vast oceans within, or somesuch, and yet nobody follows through on the very salient point that this is a really creepy age difference. Seven years doesn't matter so much later in life, but the seven years between 17 and 24 are pretty significant.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-13-1486534525.jpeg)

Clay realizes that Maddie has something on her mind, so she blurts out that she wants to know who started the fight that got him bloodied. He accuses her of being afraid of him, and she admits she is a bit. Naturally, Clay does not tell her that he got jumped by some dipshits, and instead mopes that the only person he ever hurts is himself. This is for sure true of his shirt choices.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-14-1486534540.jpeg)

Juliette's recovery is suddenly coming in LEAPS and BOUNDS. I am sure the show has not drawn a connection between the resumption of her sex life with Avery and the recovery of her leg motion, but nonetheless, things did pick up after she opened the Barnes doors. Would that we could, indeed, bang our way back to health.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-15-1486534552.jpeg)

This is a lovely shot of Juliette looking nervous but deeply hopeful, and Emily seeming more wary -- as if they both know what Juliette wants to get from this, and are to varying degrees afraid of disappointment. But then Hallie starts singing and Juliette sings along and begins to glow with the salvation she so badly seeks, and the thing is, Rhiannon Giddens' voice IS enough to make anyone see God. So.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-17-1486534580.jpeg)

That scene of Juliette discovering something is intercut neatly with Avery re-discovering something: performing. After, he's at the new coffee shop set called Barista Parlor. Which is a terrible, terrible name for a coffee place. It's like calling renaming Subway "Sandwich Artist Place," or McDonald's, "Insane Clown Arches." A dude he knows from the biz is trying to convince him to get back into recording, and boy, is he tempted.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-16-1486534565.jpeg)

Juliette being Juliette, she cannot simply be content with a spiritual inner life. No, it has to be a spiritual outer life that she can then second-guess and cry about when Twitter hates her choices. So she tells Rayna she wants to record a gospel album. OF COURSE SHE DOES. Despite having nowhere near gospel pipes. Juliette cannot do anything halfway. She has to go there and back and there again. Rayna has popped by to tell Juliette some news: Luke Wheeler is selling Idiotically Named Record Label, and Zach Woods thinks he should buy it "for Highway 65." Making it sound like a toy Highway 65 can play with and then give away later when it's been outgrown. Rayna doesn't really know how to react to Juliette's proclamation -- I'm sure she thought, "Wow, what an interesting phase this will be" -- but insists to Juliette that she'd still like to work with her.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-18-1486534593.jpeg)

Scarlett comes to the edit bay to see the music video, bceause she wants to be prepared for what the world will see. And she freaking loves it. The sight of herself crawling across a table full of food, writhing in front of a mirror, and laughing/crying/smiling/peering mysteriously in front of a mirror all in one 15-second swing, causes her to blubber all over the director. "This experience was HORRIBLE for me," she clarifies, before asking him how on Earth he made her look exactly the way she feels inside. I... what? He beams that this all came from her, not from him, and Scarlett is entranced. Oh dear. However, we must note that although this growing-out phase of her hair is awkward, Clare Bowen's face looks flat-out perfect in this scene.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-19-1486534611.jpeg)

Maddie attempts to have another conversation with Rayna, this time frankly explaining Clay's bipolar disorder. And when Rayna dares to say that, well, yes, that's somethig to think about, Maddie shrieks, "SEE, I CAN'T TALK TO YOU ABOUT THIS, ALL YOU'RE GONNA SAY IS THAT YOU WANT ME TO DATE A PERSON WHO ISN'T CRAZY." Because just as Juliette cannot do anything part way, Maddie cannot feel anything at mid-volume

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-20-1486534624.jpeg)

Rayna, awesomely, is like, "Of COURSE I want you to date a person who isn't crazy. GOOD LUCK FINDING ONE." This at least makes Maddie laugh. Rayna is handling this so calmly and with actual useful words. Including these: "I fell in love with a messed-up alcoholic. I’m not sitting in judgment of anybody." *Nashville*, you are my sensible, practical TV lover.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-22-1486534654.jpeg)

Hi, Luke! He shows up long enough to hear Zach's pitch, and then ask Rayna if she trusts him. "So far," she says, and that's enough for Luke: He'll sell. But not before he also absolves Rayna of all guilt about their relationship, telling her that he knows now they weren't destined for each other and she saw it first and she's so smart and RAYNA THE WISE AND POWERFUL. Boring.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-23-1486534668.jpeg)

I did think you should see her floral blazer. It might be satin? It's not very Rayna. It looks like something she'd only wear if it were required for passage into the building.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-24-1486534683.jpeg)

Zach Woods, meanwhile, sneaks away and stalks Will into his dressing room. Zach basically repeats his pitch to Will about the two of them nailing immediately -- um, I mean, about Zach helping him amp up his career, especially now that he bought Rayna a second record company. (Because she's SO GOOD at managing the one she already had.) Get ready, Will. You're gonna be wooed.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-25-1486534698.jpeg)

Aw, some father-daughter ice cream time. They are very nice to each other, and then Maddie repurposes some of Clay's earlier thoughts and blurts out that every human is basically an entire planet on legs, with infinite different experiences and perspectives, and yada yada yada Deacon is all, "YOU thought of that?" And she's like, "YUP. NO HELP AT ALL."

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-27-1486534724.jpeg)

Juliette is prickly with Avery, but quickly admits it's because she's afraid he -- and everyone else -- will think she's dumb for embracing God. Avery assures her that he thinks she's great no matter what; the Internet, armed with a video of her shot surreptitiously at Church, disagrees. The entertainment clip she watches shows the two anchors essentially being like, "HA HA HA, THEY LET JULIETTE BARNES INSIDE A HOUSE OF WORSHIP, HOW DID IT NOT CATCH FIRE." Classy. Can you imagine *Extra* ever saying anything like that, though? Come on. *Extra* loves everyone.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-28-1486534736.jpeg)

Rayna's stalker has a restraining order out on him, but he strolls merry-as-you-please into Daphne's school and tries to hand her a letter. I can't believe Rayna hired a security team AND got an alarm, but didn't think to secure her kids' school. That feels very Rayna. She often pays a lot of lip service to worrying about her girls but then doesn't actually DO it.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-29-1486534749.jpeg)

Luckily, these three teens have watched TV before. They know this dude is full of shit. Pubescent Adam Driver is seriously unimpressed. So they start yelling and running away from the creepy adult at top speed...

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-30-1486534761.jpeg)

... and the creepy adult just stands there for a second while NO OTHER STUDENTS AROUND even bother to react. They just sit there like, "Hey, check it, some bearded stranger who just wandered in the back way made the famous lady's daughter scream and run. What Snapchat filter would work for this?"

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-31-1486534778.jpeg)

But Daphne is so unperturbed that she doesn't even let Rayna take her home from school -- partly because Pubescent Adam Driver passes by and flips a wave at her through the hole in the door. So she sails out happily, as Deacon and Rayna are speechless. Connie Britton's WTF face is getting an Olympic workout this week.

![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/02/nashville-recap-season-5-episode-6-33-1486534806.jpeg)

And then Juliette digs out another sedately Churchy outfit and takes Avery to Mass. He smiles very supportively, more so when he sees how rapt Juliette appears to be. If for Connie this was about maing incredulous faces, for Hayden this whole week was about looking like she spiked her protein shake with holy water.
