All the stories about Tonga are about our friend The Hot Shirtless Man, who did not qualify for Paris. However, three cheers to their four-person delegation for looking cool and creative. They compete in athletics (100m), boxing (lost), and swimming (women's 50 free, men's 100m back). I would love to see a historic first medal!

Turkmenistan sent six athletes, all of whom are still in it as of this writing. The flagbearers here both do judo. They look SHARP -- that pin-stripe coat is especially impressive, but I fear for how that hat smelled after it got rained on for four hours.
Togo

Svitolina is married to Gael Monfils, who was on the French boat. Anyway. I appreciate their comfy footwear but we need to get them some PIZZAZZ.
USA

All the random boats were a hoot to see -- ours was HUGE. Some nations shared boats, and some...

... and some only needed pleasure craft. Some of those smaller boats were REALLY bobbing along on there. The 3-person delegation does archery, athletics, and swimming, with the middle one being a women's marathon entrant. I love their stripes.

Back to the U.S. Our blazers are pleasantly preppy -- I do also like that the flag-bearers, LeBron James and Coco Gauff, stand out -- and the jeans in the end seem pretty nice to have on a rainy night.
Sha'Carri Richardson

This is like the "show us your forearms" version of the U.S. outfits, and I'm here for it. NO COMPLAINTS.
Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo used to compete as Zaire (the name changed in 1997). They look like a business delegation.
Refugee Olympic Team

There are 37 athletes on this squad this year, and while I understand the white outfits given that they compete under the Olympic flag, I wish they'd snazz them up a bit for these folks.
Fiji

Gabon

This is one we heard NO details about on the night, because nobody at NBC had their notes/working earpieces/I don't even know what was going on. I have noticed that sprinting, swimming, and judo seem to be common sports among nations with very tiny delegations, and that is again the case here with Gabon's 5-person crew. (Gabon is in Central Africa.) I love that blue.
Bahamas

I wish the boats weren't blocking the view of the coats, because the bottom part is so interesting! And the hats are fun. This is better than it appears from a cursory look.
Teddy Riner

Most of their 16-person delegation consists of wrestlers. I find their hats thrilling.

Give of their 11 athletes are in track and field. They also sent some fencers, and are in judo and taekwondo. My son Dylan would go nuts for these outfits because of all that orange.
Haiti

If I were these women, I'd be like, "EXCUSE ME, but... we're in SKIRTS? Can you NOT?" They're long enough skirts for it not to be an issue, but come on. (It was a female photographer, if you're wondering. How did she not think of this???)
Australia

This shorter ombre length is much more chic! (Since chicness is obviously of paramount importance.)

Somehow I didn't get anyone else from Team NZ, but I did get this man's spectacular mullet and their native garb. Also, re: Sir Mullet: "In 2022, at the age of 31, Gate became a quadruple Commonwealth champion when taking gold in the individual pursuit, team pursuit and points race on the track as well as the road race." Damn! (Jo is a sailor.)

I don't know how I feel about the shirt print. Or, I do, and it's: meh. The little half-Union Jack looks like crow's feet.

Canada

Ecuador sent more people than we can see in this photo (they're in the back), so maybe there's another part to the boat? They have 40 athletes there. Egypt sent 148!
Dominican Republic

Formerly Swaziland, Eswatini changed its name on 2018 on the 50th anniversary of its independence. The name means "land of the Swazis," but in their language rather than in English. They sent a delegation of three -- one runner, two swimmers -- and they brought with them one of the best jackets.
Kiribati
PARIS, FRANCE - JULY 26: Kaimauri Erati and Nera Tiebwa, Flagbearers of Team Kiribati, are seen waving the flag on a boat on the River Seine during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on July 26, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)
Kiribati is an island in Micronesia that achieved independence from the UK in 1979, and first joined the Summmr Olympics in 2004. They sent a sprinter, a judoka, and a weightlifter. And FABULOUS shirts.
Grenada

One of their delegation of six is a decathlete! Also, I see Guam's flag there but I didn't get a shot of them. Sorry, Guam.
Montenegro

Cape Verde
PARIS, FRANCE - JULY 26: Team Cabo Verde travel down the River Seine during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on July 26, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo by Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)
This is neat: Cape Verde has never had sponsored kit before, but they found a clothing brand based in Massachusetts that's run by Cape Verdeans -- ISLNDZ -- and they did the entire kit. This is so thrilling for them.
Micronesia
PARIS, FRANCE - JULY 26: Kestra Kihleng (C) and Tasi Limtiaco (L), Flagbearers of Team Federated States of Micronesia, walk with their flag during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on July 26, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images)

Austria

I was cranky about them not getting to walk the lap around the stadium, as is normal, but I guess they DID get to walk from the boats to their seats and THEN mingle with other athletes? So that's BETTER than I feared, but I still found this whole thing to be planned for TV (and at times not even good for that) more than for the participants. Even though they are the whole reason we're here. Sigh. But they seemed gleeful anyway!
