HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Marion Cotillard arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
This was, as you probably remember, the year that Marion won for La Vie En Rose. This is one of my favorite Oscar gowns of all time.
Saoirse Ronan
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Saoirse Ronan arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Saoirse was nominated ten years ago for Atonement -- I have to think her green dress is a nod to the famous one in the film -- and is nominated again on Sunday. I wish she would rewear this! (Imagine the headlines!) She is thirteen here, the same age as Mille Bobby Brown, for reference.
Amy Adams in Proenza Schouler
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Amy Adams arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
You can tell most easily by looking at the train, but this dress is a glorious emerald green. Additionally: Amy Adams has not aged.
Nicole (Balenciaga with a L'Wren Scott necklace) and Keith
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Nicole Kidman and husband, musician Keith Urban arrive at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
That dress is really just background for that fab necklace; what a loss it was when Scott died.
Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Renee Zellweger arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
When this originally happened, we were kinda bored by this dress, because it was SO typical of what Renee always wore, but in retrospect, she looks great and we were nuts.
George Clooney and Sarah Larson
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actor George Clooney (R) and Sarah Larson arrive at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Remember when Intern George was dating Sarah Larson, the Vegas cocktail waitress? She seemed so nice, and she looked fantastic in this. I wonder whatever happened to her; I have heard that Cloons is fairly generous when a long-term relationship runs its course. (They broke up fairly soon after this.)
Jennifer Hudson in Cavalli
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Singer Jennifer Hudson arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
J. Hud won the year prior, so was in attendence to hand out best supporting actor (to Javier Bardem for No Country For Old Men, as it turned out). I wish the waist accent on this was a bit wider.
Jessica Alba in Marchesa
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actresse Jessica Alba arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
This was the height of Marchesa's power -- arguably -- and this gown on pregnant Jessica Alba IS pretty.
Anne Hathaway in Marchesa
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Anne Hathaway arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
And Annie H. looks very pretty in a dress that feels like she came to the Marchesa studio and asked for their best take on Kate Winslet's most famous Oscar dress. It works on her, though.
Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Anne Hathaway (L) and Raffaello Follieri arrive at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
UGH, poor Anne. So much photographic evidence of that time she was dating a con man who defrauded the Vatican. We all make bad choices.
Diablo Cody
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Writer Diablo Cody arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
I didn't enjoy this at the time nearly as much as I enjoy it now.
Amy Ryan in Calvin Klein
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Amy Ryan arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
This is always how I imagine Calvin Klein, even though current Calvin Klein is, like, really into garbage bags. (Amy was nominated this year, for Gone Baby Gone, in which she was great.)
Heidi Klum in custom Dior (by John Galliano)
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: TV personality Heidi Klum arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)
This is great on her -- it was later auctioned off to raise money for heart disease research. This was almost exactly three years before Dior fired Galliano for his anti-semitic outbursts at Paris fashion week; I'd argue they've never been the same, although firing him was absolutely the right thing to do.
Heidi Klum

This feels like Klum As Usual
Cameron Diaz in Dior
Before you get too nostalgic about Galliano, this is also his work and Cammy looks like an unmade bed.
Helen Mirren in Georges Chakra
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Helen Mirren arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Well played by our Queen. For which she had won the previous year, and ergo was there to present best actor, to....
Daniel Day Lewis and Rebecca Miller
...this man, who is also nominated this year.
Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Jennifer Garner arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
J Gar was in attendance in support of Juno, in which she was quite good, and the real star here, I think, are her many diamonds.
Eva Herzigova
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Model Eva Herzigova attends the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
Apparently, sleeves have been attacking for YEARS.
Penelope Cruz in custom Chanel
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Penelope Cruz arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
She look FAB in this, and was present both to look fab, and with Javier Bardem, because they had just started dating.
Miley Cyrus in Valentino
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Miley Ray Cyrus arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
Yes, that is Miley Cyrus. She could EASILY drag this out again.
Miley and her mom
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: (R-L) Actress Miley Ray Cyrus and mother Leticia "Tish" Cyrus arrive at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Tish looks pretty great too, TBH.
Johnny Depp (in Armani) and Vanessa Paradis (in Chanel)
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actor Johnny Depp (L) and Vanessa Paradis arrive at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
This seems quite par for the course. (He was nominated for Sweeny Todd.)
Hilary Swank in Versace
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Hilary Swank arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)
This is quite reasonable, in retrospect.
Laura Linney in Michael Kors
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Laura Linney arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Kate Beckinsale attends the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
She almost always looks like this, and that's not a complaint. She looks good here.
Sharon Stone
I was DELIGHTED BY THIS went it happened. And I still am. I love you, Shazza.
Faye Dunaway
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Faye Dunaway arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
"Just WAIT nine years. Shit is going to get real on my watch at the Oscars."
Ziyi Zhang
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Ziyi Zhang attends the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
This is so charming and she looks like a TEEN.
Katherine Heigl in Escada
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Katherine Heigl arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Too much makeup, perhaps, but this dress was steller on Heigl -- who I admit, I kinda miss these days.
SWINTON in Lanvin
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Tilda Swinton arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
Deliciously in character. (She won this year, for Michael Clayton.)
Cate Blanchett in Dries van Noten
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Cate Blanchett arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
La Blanchett just wants to take off her shoes; she was double-nominated this year, for Best Actress in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which is A TERRIBLE MOVIE (although she's good in it), and for best-supporting for I'm Not There.
Rosamund Pike in Roland Mouret
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Rosamund Pike arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
I have NO IDEA why Rosamund Pike was at this Oscars, but this....is not her finest. She did not have a movie out OH I FIGURED IT OUT. She was engaged to Joe Wright in 2008, and he was there in support of Antonement. I'm an Oscars Detective.
Sofia Vergara
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Sofia Vergara attends the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
I think this was before Sofia truly mastered the wrangling of the cleav.
Zoe Saldana
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Zoe Saldana attends the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
That is an aggressive floral note on Zoe, who was, at this time, about a year away from breaking out in Star Trek and Avatar. I've always loved you for Center Stage, Zoe. ALWAYS.
Calista Flockhart (in vintage Valentino) and Harrison Ford
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actors Calista Flockhart and Harrison Ford attend the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party at the Pacific Design Center on February 24, 2008 in West Hollywood, California. (Photo by Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images)
I felt kinda meh about this then, when I didn't realize Calista's gown was vintage, and I honestly am still meh about it.
Marlee Matlin
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Marlee Matlin arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)
In need of a flashback hoik -- though facially, she looks stunning.
Adrienne Frantz
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Adrienne Frantz arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
I am not wholly sure why a star of The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless was at the Oscars, but good for you, Adrienne!
Keri Russell in Nina Ricci
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Keri Russell (L) and guest at the Governor's Ball following the 80th Annual Academy Awards, held at The Highlands on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
This was very pretty and girlish.
Dwayne Johnson
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actor Dwayne Johnson arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
IT'S THE ROCK! (And Mary Hart, resplendent behind him.0
Julie Christie
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Julie Christie arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
She was nominated for Away From Her, and decided...why not gloves?
Diane Lane in David Meister
HOLLYWOOD - FEBRUARY 24: Actress Diane Lane arrives at the 80th Annual Academy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)
It's unusual to see brown on the red carpet, but this was good.
Ellen Page in vintage Jean Louis Scherrer
I like this better now that I know it's vintage, but this feels a little bland on Ellen, who has really grown into herself over the last ten years.
