Now for the bad news: I don't... love this? SHE is glowing; you cannot make this human look bad, so that's a plus. But I had hoped we were working up to a real piece of fashion-as-art here -- a dramatic and glitzy LOOK that we would be talking about for years to come, in the same breath as Julia's vintage Valentino and Halle's daring Elie Saab. Maybe Michelle wanted the history and not the clothes to be the subject, but real talk, we're always going to talk about the clothes so you might as well serve some major ones. This is very safe.

Speaking of winners who made history! This is a bit busy, maybe, and complicated, but I'm landing on liking it -- which I suspect will be a divisive opinion. I've been lukewarm on Ariana's outfits lately, though, and this has visual interest, good structure, it fits, it's sexy... I'm into it.

It MIGHT not have needed all that in the back, but I don't hate it. MAYBE would have cut the toiler-paper train.

I like the idea of this one more than the execution, I think. The rose garland looks like it was made for another dress and tacked on late. Her blooming hip is a little The Last of Us.

But she tried it! I feel like she struggled to see out that left eye, too.

This is gorgeously ornate. He does not disappoint.

Neither did Mr. Racaccoonie himself. This is neat.

Whatever the netting is... it looks like it's actually plastic, or something? It looks like it's denting, or bunching. Anyway, this is like a bad D&G homage from Vera here, maybe with elements borrowed from Brandon Maxwell's early work, and I wish I liked it but I cannot. The overlong sleeve is killing me -- she looks like a nervous 8th grader waiting to give an oral report.

I can't tell for sure but between the last photo and this one, I THINK you can tell that there's the teeniest thread connecting the sleeves to the bodice. Which makes sense, because if not, wouldn't those slide down her arms all night?

Compression sleeves were very in on this evening. She looks good, and the earrings are a nice choice, but I don't think it's as memorable as her red SAGs dress.

In some light this looked pale pink; in others, this creamy color. In all lights, it looked terrible. Messy, flat, dated rather than retro. She told one of the red carpet interviewers, really cheerily -- as if giving them compliments -- that this was all her team, and I can't help wondering if underneath that was a person who wanted us all to know she didn't pick this herself.

Of COURSE she went back to wearing something that looks like a nightgown on a character whose family kept her in an attic her whole life, until suddenly a new neighbor moved in and she started hiding in their garden and eavesdropping and pretending to hold tea parties with their kids. As you do. (The base garment... I might like to see it styled another way to know what it could be. Like, what would Gabrielle Union do? What would Margot Robbie do? Etc.)

So I spaced out and grabbed a pic of them at the Globes, in which SHE was in white. You'd think I would have noticed the backdrop, but no, and that's the second time this season I've been working too fast to stop and notice the backdrop. LORDY. Anyway, at least they are still in the correct post, but with DANIEL in white this time. She looks very dramatic -- very Lydia from Beetlejuice.

He loves a wide-leg pant. I've come to the conclusion that no matter what he is wearing, he always looks a little bit like he was just drinking wine in a very hot car.

And you may ask yourself: Why isn't his suit ENORMOUS?
