Kate and Leo

Kate did indeed come with her husband -- they sat together -- but she had a mission on the red carpet and she delivered. I don't mean to be a cynical old broad about it; I think it's nice when a Hollywood friendship feels genuine, and not like it's been manufactured for movie press, or just general tabloid fuss (hi, Taylor Swift and Lorde, among others). But they've been at the same awards events before without exuding QUITE this latest level of We Cannot Be Apart And Must Weep With Love In Each Other's Hair As If We Are Life Partners. So it comes off rather scripted for this awards season because he badly wants that Oscar; he's recently(ish) single and/or he wants someone in the photos with him who he knows he won't regret one, five, ten, or twenty years from now (nice forethought on that, actually); and he knows he's never more likable to people than when Kate Winslet is on his arm reminding everyone they're besties.

Having said that, I get it, and I'm not upset with them about it. Honestly, it's smart for both of them, and he's COMPLETELY right to want to look back on this night and see someone he still speaks to/ feels warmly toward in half of the photos.

As for the gown: I am glad to see her venturing out of her box, so to speak, after being so predictable at the Globes and the SAGs. But the wet-look is reading a bit clunky -- and worse, is another example of the dress seeming to have no relation to the way her head is styled. It's like she's a fashion plate, or she was styled on an operating table with a curtain at her neck and nobody saw what the other side was doing until she stood up to get in the car.

Slightly crooked thick-framed glasses are BACK. Every photo of Demi Moore lately has her wearing them, and then Maura Tierney wore hers to accept her Golden Globe, and now Kate came out and wore them to deliver her speech. America loves a big ol' pair of specs. Kate knows what she's doing.

Kate and Leo

This one's for all you lovers out there.
