Jess teases me that I'm always obsessed about hip stuff, and that may be true, and that may be because that's my personal issue. But I also think it's totally valid: That is really hard to wear without it widening you, and -- in a way that makes her wonderfully human, like the rest of us -- Jennifer here is no exception. Especially when said hip details are basically fins. She could flap her hips and swim home. The thing is: Jennifer can't just never wear a red dress again, and I get that, and it's not always fair to hold her past outfits up for comparison. But just as people bring up Kate Winslet's red Ben de Lisi Oscars dress as her iconic fashion moment, Jennifer Lawrence will not be able to shake us of memories of her Calvin Klein tank dress, so any similarly skimming gown in a similar shade will evoke memories.
The back chain is also an echo of something she's done before -- in this case, last year -- and seeing the hip hankies from behind does not sell me. I mean, fins are a nice ode to Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres's voice work in "Finding Nemo," but something tells me that wasn't the plan.
Her hair and makeup weren't doing it for me, either. Bold dresses need a braver face than that, and I don't hate the short hair when it's sassy and mussed and spiky, but like this? Grow it back out, because that's some Katherine Heigl Premature Matron stuff right there.
I just like the human moments. Although she might want to start practicing the basics of movement, given that she fell on her way out of the car and this dress isn't even that tricky in the scheme of things. Maybe she's just exhausted. I was hoping she'd win just so Nicholas Hoult and Bradley Cooper could've carried her safely on-stage.
