As for the dress, my first reaction was, "Hot damn, Nicole Kidman is back on top. She looks awesome." I also want to say bravo to her -- everyone always acts like she's the veteran old guard and Naomi Watts is her naive first-timer BFF who can't handle the scene, so that's what they ask her about; it got to where Nicole, very nicely, stuck up for Naomi by telling an interviewer that in fact Naomi has been nominated before and been working really hard and kicking ass for a while now and they're basically right on each other's level. She handled it very well.
Back to the dress: It was right here where I started to have reservations. Does that middle bit look like she's being unwrapped? Or peeled? Or surgically opened? I mean, we should all be so lucky as to have glittery innards, but still.
Up close, you can see it's just beads, which from afar give the whole peeling impression (at least to me). But I do wonder about the merits of a giant splat on your belly. I love most of the dress, and I suppose if a drunk sequined bat wanted to leave its sparkly mark by crashing into my midsection, I would give it an audience. But could this have been better executed? I wonder.
However, that train could not have been better. It's GORGEOUS. I love it so much. I want it in my life. I'm married but I'm pretty sure the man-wife will let me date it without suing for divorce and full custody.
