Oh, how I love this. Her Valentino seemed VERY thin and vulnerable to people's stilettos, so toss it and throw in a major party dress. This is dreamy. I cannot believe I hate Monse so much but love what they're adding to Oscar de la Renta. People contain multitudes, y'all.

Halle Berry in Versace

This is a shorter, flippier cousin to her red carpet down. Having the two dresses be kin is sort of a cool approach to this whole thing, like, "I was happy in the other one, but THIS is the one for GETTING DOWN."

Also, I still like the hair (which she apparently showed off on Instagram as many as 8 weeks ago). It may not be perfect execution; I agree with those who noted that the styling here seems uneven (I kinda want to smooth down that one chunk on the left). But I guess to me, it felt like a powerful message for the first African-American Best Actress Oscar winner to step out on a major awards show embracing what she referred to as her natural hair. 

Viola in Brandon Maxwell

I sorta love that she switched to pants. The hard part is over. Exhale and party.

Which I believe she DID. (The shoes are Stella, by the way. I think they're fun with the suit. Also, Viola had custom platform red kicks she could switch out underneath her gown for the Governors' Ball, which I ALSO love.)

Priyanka Chopra in Michael Kors

This is gorgeous. I'll take three.

Brie Larson in Ralph & Russo

Well we certainly got our Ralph & Russo wish, didn't we? Hailee Steinfeld turned up in two, and now Brie is in this one. It's the best color, and is so lovely from here...

But here I just worry it looks too... off-kilter. 

Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein

I would have worn that to the Oscars, and taken the other one and chopped off the cape and worn it here. I wouldn't have LIKED the other one much better, but it's more of a party dress.

Emma Stone

Much as with Viola, I respect Emam for picking something less constricting. The slip dress is a perfect bland backdrop for the blazer, which I think is supremely cool and looks fab on her. Why did Riccardo Tisci save his best for last?

Janelle Monae in Alexandre Vauthier

Okay, but changing into this solves very few problems. It's still somewhat cumbersome; it's still really long and going to get trampled. I get changing out of the other one, for SURE, but surely Janelle had way funkier stuff available for party time.

Teresa Palmer in Vivienne Westwood

I think I prefer this to her silver Prada from the telecast, but I am not super into the one-up, one-down arm band here. Pick one. There's enough else going on.

Emma Roberts in Armani

Hmm. It looks like mold. She went 0 for 2 for me.

Leslie Mann in Carolina Herrera

Another swing and a miss. This fades on her. It looks like she found it in an attic.

Dakota in Gucci

Well, this is WAY better than her first Gucci of the night, but I can't tell if that means it's good. It's fine? It's probably in the vein of what Felicity Jones SHOULD have done to improve her Oscars gown.

Felicity Jones in Erdem

Speaking of Felicity: She got it backward ALSO. Why change into a LONGER dress?!? The other one was drab and dowdy but at least it's not as cumbersome as this looks. Most of all there's a vibe of her not having very much fun in ANY of these, which is a real bummer.
