(Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Lorde, as we've mentioned, had the flu. And I have NO IDEA what her performance was slated to be, but here's what happened: She walked out and cued up a recording of her song, and then danced around interpretively for a while as if she was completely making it up as she went along. It had the feel of being thrown together because she was too sick to do whatever she'd originally planned, and was like, "Screw it, I should be at home in my sweatpants, so I'm just going to keep them on." Every time she got lifted up, it felt like they were whispering, "Just swing your leg a little and we'll put you RIGHT back down," and the rest had the aura of that scene in *Dirty Dancing* when Baby balks at the lift and improvises something with her thumbs. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839998424_master-1503893703.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Lorde performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Honestly, if she'd planned it this way as an affectionate flip-off to the stress and spectacle of being asked to perform at this dog-and-pony show, it would've been pretty effective. As it was... nobody seemed to know what was happening, and half the time Lorde looked like she was laughing and shrugging. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839998422_master-1503893684.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Lorde performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Miley sounded super. There was a time I never thought I'd say that, but before Bangerz, she clearly put in some serious work on her pipes and it shows. This was catchy and she looked great. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840000284_master-1503893606.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Miley Cyrus performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage) ... not so much here, though. ## Alessia Cara ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840005228_master-1503893651.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Alessia Cara performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) Alessia came out in a black banged bob and this gown -- and as she's never NOT worn jeans and sneakers, I was like, "Oh, okay, that dress is getting theatrically removed in a second." Indeed, as she sang "Scars To Your Beautiful," a mob of dancers came out and dismantled her look until she was in a blank tank and leggings. ## Fifth Harmony ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840035186-1503899011.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Dinah Jane, Normani Kordei, Lauren Jauregui, and Ally Brooke of music group Fifth Harmony perform onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) This cracked me up. It was such shade that it wasn't even shade: It was sunlight. Fifth Harmony publicly lost a member when Camila Cabello quit to go solo, and thus, when the band performed, it began with five women in shadow and then once the songs started THE FIFTH ONE FELL OFFSTAGE. Just real quick, but not subtle. Oh, well done, ladies. ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840007362_master-1503893718.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: (L-R) Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Normani Kordei of music group Fifth Harmony perform onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Then they danced in glass cages for a bit, which was less thrilling. ## Nicki Minaj ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840017588_master-1503893587.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Nicki Minaj performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) She came out to sing with Katy Perry on "Swish Swish," dressed apparently as a sexy referee. No, seriously. If Katy was dressed as the ball and her backup dancers had hoops for heads, then Nicki probably WAS supposed to be officiating. ## Kendrick Lamar ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839981380_master-1503893732.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Kendrick Lamar performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) Then Kendrick lit people on fire, after which the wall went up in flames and some folks climbed around on it. SOMEBODY has been watching Eurovision highlights. ## Ed Sheeran ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839984188_master-1503893745.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Ed Sheeran performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) Ed's all, "ME! IT WAS ME! I LOVE EUROVISION AND LOOK AT MY FIRE." ## Kendrick Lamar ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839984380_master-1503893758.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Kendrick Lamar performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) I guesk Kendrick could be dressed AS fire? ## Julia Michaels ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839987812_master-1503893769.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Julia Michaels performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) Julia and another singer, Kyle, each performed right before a commercial break -- and then they put up a graphic telling people to watch the rest online, promo'd what was coming up, and then cut to commerical. In the case of Kyle, that commercial was ANOTHER artist singing something ELSE, sponsored by Extra. What a mess. I also think it's inescapably douchey to invite these people to sing on your show but only give them 20 seconds of air time before you're like, "NEEEEEEXT." ## Khalid ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840007522-1503893462.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Khalid performs onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Khalid won Best New Artist, and also sang a song during a promo for a suicide hotline. It was very touching. I also enjoy that he turned up in plaid and his cargo pants. He looks so COMFORTABLE. ## Ellen DeGeneres ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-840001910_master-1503893638.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: Ellen DeGeneres speaks onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images) Ellen gave Pink her Video Vanguard trophy in a jacket that's quite good. ## Hailey Baldwin in Alexandre Vauthier ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/BGUS_968431_017-1503899231.jpg) Inglewood, CA - Stars seen posing at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards At The Forum in Inglewood. (Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images) I'd rather admire Pink's flying car. She then drove around the stage in what I first thought was an ATV but it actually looked more like a fancy riding lawn mower. I was half afraid she'd ride it offstage by mistake and then LITERALLY mow down some fans. ## DJ Khaled and son ![](https://static.gofugyourself.com/uploads/2017/08/GettyImages-839998658_master-1503893783.jpg) INGLEWOOD, CA - AUGUST 27: DJ Khaled (R) speaks while holding Asahd Tuck Khaled onstage during the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on August 27, 2017 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) This child was in custom Gucci -- like, Gucci sent people to DJ Khalid's HOUSE to TAILOR IT TO HIS LITTLE BABY FRAME -- and then I guess changed into this. I hate to break it to you guys, but he's gonna grow out of that Gucci soon. You might as well just let him wear it and throw up all over it.
