1999: Cate

We begin with Mrs. America contender Cate Blanchett, an eternity ago. She's been nominated either as herself or as an ensemble a whopping 15 times, though she hasn't attended for every single one of them (that I can tell). This was a solo nom for Elizabeth, and this is about as twee and innocent as you can imagine. It's very early Elizabeth, versus the later one who sliced off her hair and people's heads.

2005

She won this year for The Aviator, looking fine but perhaps uninspired.

2007

"Notes on a Scandal" and "Babel" brought her back. I like this but the pendant seems to be a weird choice. It's too low.

2008

It's fun to contrast this, which she wore in support of the Elizabeth sequel, with what she wore nine years earlier, and see how far she'd come in terms of star wattage.

2014

This was her Blue Jasmine run, and it is the most beautiful napkin around.

This year is actually his first nomination, though he attended this year; safe to say he won't be in anything this traditional, given his love of color and how divinely, wackily bright he went while announcing the nominees.

Back in this era, Kaley often nailed the hair but not the dress, or the dress but not the hair. This is the latter -- I feel like the braid headband was distracting. It's not as bad as it's going to GET, though.

This is fine? It's hard to imagine this being anyone's first choice, though.

There's something so charming to me about how celebs used to be unabashedly practical about bringing and wearing coats. I mean, it WAS January. She probably did need it.

... but in THIS one you get a much better sense of the color picture. I still don't like the heavy monochrome piece at the bottom, but at least I can appreciate more what the top part was trying to do.

That's a superb color on her.

I love her for falling in step with the cape trend, but it looks a bit like a bird crashed into a tree above her head and its feathers are slowly drifting down on to her, while she tries to pretend it's not happening.

Somehow, Carey Mulligan has only been to the SAGs once?!? I wish she were getting a proper red-carpet chance to correct this misstep. It looks like someone put it on her, twisted the skirt, and then pinned it.

His first and only SAGs appearance was the year Black Panther won. He looked stylish and slick, and I'm so, so sad he will only be there in spirit this year.
