I mean, I guess if you've gotta go, in front of a roaring fire in a brothel VIP room isn't the worst.

"Jamie. My curl formation. It's so potent! And with my hair so short! I'D FORGOTTEN."

"My forehead understands, Sassenach."

"HEY. HEY YOU. WAKE UP. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF MY HAIR THIS LENGTH. I'M VERY CONFLICTED."

"If you get an answer, Sassenach, ask him about my bangs."

"I... think I might try to grow it out before the next episode. It will not respond well to prolonged energetic lovemaking."

"What do you know about our lovemaking?"

"It's just that... soundproofing has not been invented yet, Monsieur Malcolm."

"Are you saying you KNEW ALL ALONG that these were sex bangs?"

"Welllllll...."

"HELLO, does anyone still care that my brain is basically getting its period all over the pillow?"

Okay but seriously, Claire leaves for an errand on foot and comes back and this guy's thrashing around, and STILL hasn't made a mess.

"UNCLE JAMIE YOU'RE SO COOL I WILL SELL ANYTHING YOU WANT ALSO WILL YOU MAYBE SIGN MY BOOB LATER???"

"FERGUS I DID IT! I SOLD ILLICIT THINGS TO A BIG BAD MAN! I THINK I JUST FELT SO MUCH HAIR GROW OUT OF MY CHEST."

"But... my aunt might be a murdering witch."

"BUT, she's not going to be a murdering witch TO ME."

I just love this actor. His facial expressions don't stop. It's like he's made of rubber. If we had to lose Geordie -- the point of whom I don't understand unless there's somethign else coming -- then I guess I'm glad we get Ian.

As is typical, the Outlander bad guys ooze unsubtle villainy. This is Sir Percival and there wa never any question whether or not he's a decent person. He absolutely isn't.

"Shit, Willoughby. I should have used a studfinder."

Post-neurosurgery, it's STILL immaculate in there. Was Jamie gone long enough for them to burn the linens onto which his head evacuated itself?

"YES OKAY LET'S START A BUSINESS TOGETHER BUT FIRST I NEED TO ASK YOU ABOUT BONERS. IS IT AN ACTUAL BONE IN THERE AND CAN IT BREAK."

"OH THANK GOD. ALL I WANT IS TO USE IT ON THAT LADY WITHOUT IT SNAPPING IN HALF."

"I DIDN'T MEAN RIGHT NOW THOUGH OMG THESE AREN'T EVEN MY NICE UNDERCRACKERS."

"Hi! I'm a ladyperson who hopes not to end up dead or violated on this show. What can you do for me?"

"I WILL BE THE GENTLEST MOUSE. I DON'T EVEN REALLY KNOW WHICH BITS TO USE!!!"

So, these are the Campbells. I can only assume from this interlude that this will not be the last time Claire crosses paths with Archibald and Margaret; otherwise, it seems a long time to spend on someone's backstory.

"BACK TO ME, IAN, ON THE NIGHT OF THE GREAT PUMPING!!!!"

The scene where he flips her around and assumes this is how it's done, simply because it's all he's noticed the brothel lasses doing, cracks me up. Brighid seems to find this adorably clueless rather than off-putting.

"OH IS THAT WHAT A NIPPLE FEELS LIKE WELL NO BIG DEAL I'M JUST GONNA EXPLODE FOR A SECOND."

And then Old Ian pops up, and his reunion with Claire is so touching. The villains may be over the top at times, but some of the quiet performances from the smaller characters are truly wonderful. Here, Ian manages to have a whole conversation with Jamie about the whereabout of his son, while being unable to resistflickering his eyes back to Claire, and never losing the sense of happy astonishment over her reapparance. It's so true to life. You WOULD need to go about your business but also be using 20 percent of your brain to still think, "WTF I NEED TO PROCESS THIS."

You can see it if you squint, but basically, as the scene progresses and he refocuses on Claire, some subtle tears snake down his cheeks. He's so thrilled, and so confused, and so afraid to hope. Ian, I wish we saw you more.

Well THIS seems like a really subtle omen.

In which Jamie learns that firelight and paper cause problems.

"DO YOU THINK MY VIRGINITY BURNED UP IN THERE TOO? OR DO I STILL HAVE IT? I AM SO CONFUSED AND YOU MIGHT BE A WITCH."

"Well, this could not possibly have been prevented by any of my prior decisions, and I am pretty sure none of them will come back to bite me ever again, so: feeling good."
